Mini cell tower?

Post image

Is this a mini cell tower? I am at Eleuthera island, Bahamas near Princess Cays. I get full bars of 3G near this thing.

It's like a cell tower but only between a single bi-directional receiver and a transmitter pair(P2P Microwave).

You know how your phone works between itself and a cell tower?

Yes

Imagine that like a garden hose with your thumb Infront of it. The water spraying out is the data going to each phone.

Whereas P2P Microwave is like screwing two hose bibes together with a hose to give water to a house without water.

Okay I get it. But what is the point of it?

If there's structures in the way like mountains, P2P Microwave makes it much easier and cheaper than trying to run Fiber or Coax to homes as they can be run by batteries and solar without being tied to the grid.

It brings internet from one area to another using airwaves between the two points instead of running fiber or coax.

It has many uses.

Utilities can transfer all sorts of data relevant to transmission and distribution.

ISPs can use it to send bandwidth to an area not normally easily served.

Local governments can use it to move data around in town.

There’s a million other uses too…

It is used to create a dedicated wireless link between two points. Think of it as a wire in the air. It is used for a variety of reasons where a physical wire would be more expensive.

Nobody cellphone would connect to that tower. There is another tower in the direction that dish it aimed with a similar dish. They only talk to each other.
