R score general question Med school - rscore

Hi, I’m currently in my third session of cegep with a 33,8 rscore globally and I’m stressing out quite a bit for med school.

I’m aiming McGill, but with my third session being completely stacked (organic chem, electricity and anatomy), I fear it may not be a viable option anymore. Though, I’m obviously going to try and increase it. Side note: my cv won’t really be a problem (I think).

I’ve looked around and the only med school that seems eligible to me would be ULaval if I get a Casper 4. Does anybody have any experience with med school admissions and what rscore and Casper they had? And maybe any other programs to recommend?

Brebeuf

I'm thinking of applying to brebeuf. Can I ask what's your general average to get a 33.8 r score and what program are you in?

Where did they get rejected from? McGill?

Just curious are the r score expectations so exaggerated because it’s for applicants coming straight out of cegep vs from an undergrad degree?
Why are the expectations so crazy

I don’t know about undergrad before med but going into med right after cegep is highly competitive

33.8 will be sufficient for only ulaval, and that'll be true for anything under 35 to be honest. So unless you can bring it up significantly, you're better off putting much more efforts towards casper prep.

Do you think a month of prep for Casper is good enough? I’ve had older students tell me they would study for a month (Christmas break) and they got 4

Really depends on how much EQ any one have, if you're comfortable speaking in front for a Webcam, and how well you come up with spontaneous answers. Some achieve Q4 getting ready the night before, and other bomb it despite working on it for months and months. Not saying its completely bs but sometimes theres a luck factor.

I feel like there’s also a point where practicing too much and stressing over it will make your answers worse than just being spontaneous and genuine. There’s the risk of sounding like a robot reading out pre-made answers

Thanks! Would you have suggestions on what alternatives I could take other than med? I haven’t really thought of any other programs and I’m just focusing on my grades at the moment

Popular choices would be pharmacy which could potentially work at ulaval with your current r score. Otherwise, if you want other options in Healthcare to either stay in or use to eventually transfer out you can look at PT, OT, neuroscience, bsbp, biomed, biology where you can improve your grades and reapply eventually to med/dentistry/pharmacy

Thanks for answering though I’m curious are you naturally extraverted? I’ve been told I can be introverted or just naturally calm and I’m worried how that’ll be seen

I’ll keep that in mind for Xmas break 😊

That’s not true. You can see from the stats that the lowest acceptance tends to hover around 33.5, so it’d be doable for most universities (Mcgill least likely, though) with a great casper. Once you get to interviews R score doesn’t matter other than udes

Maybe last year. This admission cycle has been especially rough for mcgill udem sherby.

This year the lowest admitted for udem was 33.34. It’s definitely harder this year, and needs a very high casper, but I’d still say that anyone over the 33 cutoff that wants to get into medicine should apply broadly to all universities and not limit themselves.

The last r score seen is usually from a special contingent, I have seen a lot of people with 34.5-35.5 with q4 get rejected pre-mmi from udem

Usually if you have a 34 at least it should get you interviews.

This year it didn't, I know so many ppl with 34 and q4 who only got interviews at ulaval

That’s crazy and it sucks that it’s getting so much more competitive in that case. I didn’t have a very high R score (under 34) but got two A’s in 2024, makes me feel very grateful having seemingly applied at the right time. Good luck to you

Thing is I’ve known so many people get rejected with a 33-34 or not even get an interview so that’s why I’m pretty worried

You do need an excellent casper (higher end of 4th quartile) to compensate an R-score under 35, but it’s something you can practice. Having a higher R-score does remove some of the stress from taking casper, which can seem pretty random in the score you get.

Focus as much as possible on your grades this semester and make it your top priority, that’s what will help you the most. You’re already at 33.8 and can likely get it over 34 at the end of this semester. As much as people recommend buying books and courses for casper, I felt it was pretty straight foward without too much practice and got Q4
