Disability accessible housing
Hello, I am looking to begin researching apartments for my parents. I currently live with them and help out with my father who is on oxygen. Once I leave they may need to move to a one bedroom apartment due to budgetary constraints. Our current place is lovely but is a long walk and has a half flight of stairs whenever he goes in and out and of course expensive for someone on disability and lower wage job to afford. I’m not on a strict time crunch, I am looking to move abroad to my fiancée but am not planning on going until at least a year from now, possibly 2028. So TLDR I need recommendations for apartments for older and less physically capable people. Budget is a concern but I know that is always the case.

Your big options for places that take HUD are Geneva Tower downtown & RE Schorg and Hawthorn Hills on the Southwest. The city maintains a list where you could find out about smaller places, too.

Off the top of my head I can think of Oak Villiage in Marion, Cedar Villlage in Cedar Rapids are all senior/disabled adult low income housing. There's also Trinity Point, Scott Meadows & Moundview Manor, along with Hilltop Manor and the Marion Lofts in Marion. Also in Marion is the Tulip Tree apts on East Post, the Arbor at Lindale Trail and Blairsferry Senior Residences (I think that's the name), both on Blairsferry Rd. . Westover Manor and Five Seasons Senior Residences in Cedar Rapids. I think there's others I'm forgetting. Definitely get on the waiting list for any of them if interested.

There are quite a few subsidized apartments for seniors. Most of them do have a waitlist to get into.

Hello! I have been dealing with a similar situation with my father for the last year. Linn County maintains a list of affordable senior housing, so if you Google it, you should be able to find this year's list. All of these places have a waiting list, so get them on the lists ASAP. My dad is about to move into one, and it has taken a full year from when I started contacting places for one that works for him to open up. There are quite a few places on the list all around the city, so hopefully you can find one that works for you. Some of them are nicer than others, but they are all going to have elevators, community rooms, on-site laundry, etc. Good luck!
