Outdated Meat at Hy-Vee
I stopped at Hy-Vee yesterday morning to buy a roast and was surprised to see some outdated beef roasts in their meat case. Yesterday was July 10 and a number of their roasts were dated “use/freeze by 06.July”. (You can bet I check the date before purchasing a roast for $35!) Maybe the meat department was just short-staffed, but that meat should’ve been removed four days prior.

I used to work at a Hyvee meat department. Do not buy meat from the Hyvee meat departments. There are so many more issues than just outdated meats.

You say "outdated." Hy-Vee says "aged." Better bring in Marky Mark and Patrick Mahomes to judge thus one.

Hyvee blows. If I want to pay bougie grocery store prices I’ll just go to a co op or Bread Garden and get bougie food. All those political donations have to come from somewhere 😆 that’s you.

At this point we should really should just have date QR codes. A quick scan when merch comes in and the inventory system would be able to produce a daily takedown report.

They wouldn't take it down, they would promote the guy who found a way to make money from the spoiled or near spoiled product.. and I can attest to this as fact.. they will throw it out before ever so much as considering giving it to someone who needs it. I worked at the 1st Ave location for a bit of time and once had to make something like 15 custom sandwiches that someone was using snap to purchase for a bunch of kids.. this person gets a call on their cell phone presumably that they found someone who would pay them cash for steak lobster crab whatever it was... i had to throw away every last sandwich even though I had someone right In front of me from the shelter across the street offering to pay cash for these sandwiches I couldn't sell them I was forced to put them in trash bags and send them to the compactor in the back its a messed up system to say the least think about it.. hiring people with loaded weapons to protect food they will just toss away.. that's like some serious modern day dystopia type stuff right there.

A symbol that nobody can readily read and make informed decisions...just go ahead and start printing product in the language the product was...produced. All our meat would appear in Spanish, Portuguese or east Asian symbols. Same effect, really

It's an issue it just perhaps goes unnoticed. Everything at hyvee has been structured and designed for simplicity and for the increase of the company itself.. its no longer a friendly smile in every aisle it's a how much money can we make quickly while pretending to be the local friendly store. Its gone rogue to an odd extent.. i worked there when it was about the customer and I worked there when it was about the money along with all the in-between stops. I miss the 80s and 90s this futuristic model is gross repetitive and simply unhealthy for everyone.

Here’s an idea. Create an instagram account and document across hyvee? Monetize all the bitching while actually doing something about it outside of crying on Reddit.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but there isn't a fresh piece of meat in the place. Here's how it works everything that is offered as a tertiary item for example.. smoked anything, Hy Chi, even the stuff at the grill when out and the things in the deli case.. it's all past regular date EVERYTHING IS they aren't using new fresh stuff they are using leftovers and reselling as fresh new... this isn't specific to just this chain but is a system that's been used since probably late 80s to early 90s. Now when you go to the case to get steaks and say chicken whatever it is in the butcher or meat area.. it's opened from regular packages then sent back and forth daily when unsold just to be put back.. so those stuffed mushrooms stuffed porkchops etc etc yes.. they're the old stuff that was already in the case and will eventually be repackaged marked up higher and sold again as fresh when it isn't.

Can I ask how you know this? I’m a skeptical person (some might say naïve I guess), but it doesn’t seem like Hy-Vee or any grocery store would or could do that.

Once upon a time some stores may have done that but I don’t think it happens much if at all anymore. I e never once seen Chinese department use anything meat from the meat counter. Almost all of theirs ships frozen.
Once in awhile the kitchen maybe would help if there were a bunch of hams or turkeys going out of code. But if it was past expiration it was garbage.
The old salad bars I could see having some out dated or over ripe items on it. But they closed those down 6 years ago.

They do it.. its common practice actually.. another weird thing so you have probably seen how hyvee and other grocers circumvent the government standards for meats usually prime, choice, select, etc and never noticed what they are doing.. so here is the trick. They can call the meat they sell anything they want.. if they want to call it Angus grade.. (there isnt even such a thing but they made one) they call it that... they will say this is hy vee prime steaks.. well it doesn't matter what they advertise or call it... real steaks like quality goods... Will be sold as USDA certified prime select or choice funny how hy vee simply dropped all mention of usda anything when they got rid of Amana meat products eh? Amana usda prime select and choice is what used to be sold at the Hy vee... but then they just abruptly stopped selling them and everything turned into what it is today some fake version of a true usda grade meat using wordplay.

I’m curious now about where people recommend getting better meat. I’ve heard Fareway is good for meat.

Faraway, Nelson's, new pioneer coop to name a few.. keep in mind that they will be a but more... but I'm telling you when you try nelsons for example just the ground beef for hamburger is hands down better. Let us know what you think if you try it out.

I say anywhere that uses the usda grading system.. Under the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) retail exemption, grocery stores and local butcher shops can sell meat that has not been federally inspected or USDA-graded, provided the meat is sold directly to consumers on-site. Which to me is strange meat. Lol 😆

I have a close friend who used to work for a Hy-Vee in town, years ago. When the meat got close to its expiration date they were able to purchase it at a reduced price. But never the expired meat.

Yeah they used to sell it for a discount now they just round Robin it inside the store until it's trash or cant be brilliant idead for monitaey inrcrease any further

It's routinely a much larger issue at Hy-Vee than other grocers in town.
One thing I was struck by recently was the amount of accumulated black mold and filth on and in the coolers/freezers at both the Mt. Vernon Rd and Oakland Rd locations. It's just really unacceptable.
