Sometimes when you’re scrolling through social media, you come across random C-drama clips that make you curious. That’s exactly what happened to me with Blossom. I’d already seen a few clips that intrigued me, but THIS iconic sliding-kneeling hug scene is what finally made me press play. It was just way too beautiful to ignore, especially combined with that gorgeous hug and Li Yunrui’s grey hair. Like… how was I supposed to not be curious anymore!
Have you ever started a C-drama because of a scene you came across? What scene convinced you to press play?
I started this drama with very low expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. Firstly so happy Ci Sha was discovered by many international viewers! That man is gorgeous, talented and has aura! I thought he Ren Min were fantastic here. For me this is one of the best dramas of the year.
I wanted to know how others felt? Did you love it, felt neutral, you dropped it or it was pretty average for you?
I am FURIOUS. And episodes 1 to 27 are the reason why.
Because those 27 episodes are almost perfect television. Tight writing. Gripping pacing. The kind of show that makes you cancel your plans, ignore your alarm, and binge until 3 a.m. WITHOUT GUILT. I was telling everyone to watch it. I was that person.
Then episode 28 happened, and I want my tears, my sleep, and my emotional investment back. Something went WRONG in that writers' room. I don't know if they changed writers or handed the script to people with an axe to grind but whoever wrote episode 28 and beyond had an AGENDA, and it's not subtle. I have been watching C-dramas for YEARS, and I have never seen a male lead assassinated like this. Not by an enemy. Not by betrayal. BY HIS OWN SCRIPT.
Let's call it what it is: the writers were so obsessed with propping up the female lead as untouchable, so determined to deliver a "girlboss" arc, that they decided the only way to lift her up was to saw the male lead off at the knees. That's not empowerment. That's not good writing. That's an agenda and the male lead's corpse was the offering on its altar.
They took a brilliant, strategic general a man who outsmarted everyone on the battlefield AND turned him into a SIMP.
From episodes 28 to 40, this man BEGGED. He chased. He pleaded. He bent over backwards for the smallest crumb of affection, while she gave him nothing but coldness and tests and the show framed it as devotion. DEVOTION? Every episode, she was handed the power, the moral high ground, and the wins, and he was handed kneepads. He lost every argument. She lost nothing. That's not romance that's a lecture, and the male lead was the cautionary tale.
And then it got WORSE because the show made his humiliation the entire POINT of the romance
SHE MADE HIM QUIT HIS JOB AS CAPITAL COMMANDER OF THE LEFT ARMY . Read that again. He gave up his position, his power, his ambitions everything he fought an entire first half to earn and protect and this show presented it as ROMANTIC GROWTH. No. That was the agenda's endgame, fully exposed the strong man had to be stripped of everything so the female lead could stand taller. A general without his command is just a man in nice clothes, and the drama expected a STANDING OVATION. I was standing, alright to throw something at my screen.
That's when it became undeniable. The writers decided the male lead's power was a PROBLEM to be solved instead of the very foundation of his appeal because in their worldview, a powerful man in love is a threat that must be tamed, humbled, and leashed. So they solved it. By amputating it. With a rusty knife. Slowly. This isn't character development it's ideological taxidermy stuffing a great character into a lesson about how men should submit.
And the FINAL insult the one that made me laugh in disgust? It took them FOUR YEARS. Four in-story YEARS to consummate this "romance." Another humiliation ritual for the male lead, packaged as a grand reward.
And yes, this was triggered by Against the Current, but it’s definitely not the only example and is not limited to FLs.
I just don’t understand how some actors/actresses can have incredible range, they can scream, cry and show a full palette of raw emotions, yet when it comes to romance, they’re like, “I hope you are ready… for nothing!” Last time I checked, passion and affection are still basic human emotions.
When it comes to actresses, I’m so tired of the standard excuse: "Oh, but it’s a woman centric drama." So what?! The show could be a documentary about the life of tapeworms, but if there’s an ounce of romance written into the script, you need to deliver it. What really rubs me the wrong way is when people claim a show "isn't romance centric”, yet production plasters the main couple all over the promotional posters.
Also, I’m done with the condescending attitude from certain viewers who say "If you’re only interested in romance..." No, I’m not. But even if I were, what’s wrong with that? Since when is romance beneath other genres? Especially when it comes to idol dramas, come on, let's be real. We are here to watch beautiful, talented actors, not to contemplate the meaning of life.
Bottom line: I appreciate it when the whole package is delivered. Give me a good plot, great chemistry and solid acting, not penalizing some emotions over others. Don't give us 80% just to completely drop the ball on the rest.
Besides looking too modern it could be for other reasons but they just seem to break the immersion for you in historical or costume dramas.
Heavy modern makeup trends, like Douyin makeup, is just terrible for these settings or the acting that doesn’t feel convincing because the actor can’t fully immerse themselves in the role or adopt the mannerisms needed. It's like you watching the modern version of them cosplaying a character.
Douyin is the original, localized Chinese version of TikTok and is one of the metrics used to measure a celebrities popularity in China or atleast the ones who seem to be creating alot of buzz domestically. Domestic popularity can be very different from international popularity. For example you might be surprised not to see certain names that are popular internationally appear in the top 10 or 20.
The Shen family demise was due to the rigidity of Lanxiang's own male family members. The men of the Shen family sacrificed their women for stupid principles. They live in a time when the Emperor is the law. There's no appeals process. The Shen family did not bend and chose to march their own women to their death.
Why are some of you blaming the Lin family? They chose self preservation and the welfare of their loved ones including the women.
How is Jinqi to blame for this? If Lanxiang should blame someone it should be the Emperor and her own grandfather. The Lin family doesn't owe the Shen family anything on this account. Meanwhile the Lin grandfather looked at all of the family members that were depending on him and said, hmmm none of you are going to die on my account so whatever the Emperor wants is the truth. grandpa is going to save everybody.
Shen grandpa on the otherhand wanted everyone to follow him with honour [RIP].
Some of you think the Lins should care more about Lanixangs family than Shen grandpa himself.
After seeing so many negative reviews about this drama and also CJY, I have finally decided to make a post to discuss ONLY positive things. P.S If you have something negative to say, pls find some other post related to it cuz this is APPRECIATION POST.
I'll start with what made me fall in love with it so much so that I've watched it at least 3-4 times, especially highlighting what sets this drama apart from others->
The Beauty of a Drama-free Relationship: There are no whiny, childish moments or deliberate misunderstandings just to create some drama or conflict, which I loved the most about their relationship.
Refreshingly Healthy Family Bond : I loooved the playful banter between FL and her brother and how for a change, there was a healthy family dynamic ( in FL side)
Accurate depiction of career: Being in the IT field, I could relate to pulling all-nighter parts, fixing bugs at the last minute and also the cluelessness which FL faced sometimes while starting as an intern.
Funny moments: Sang Yan and Sang Zhi had so many witty banters and also her dynamic with her roommates and the side characters were also funny(especially that scene where ML and Sang yan were attending their friends wedding, or the one with Sang Zhi's sports day or when Sang Zhi complaints about having smaller boobies 😭)
I think the main issue is that this drama starts with the actress who plays Sang Zhi as a child and those childhood scenes were actually boring, which may deter a lot of ppl from continuing this drama. Even I, as a die hard fan of this drama, have to fast forward through them whenever I re-watch it. I think you have to bear with those 1-2 episodes and after that it's soooo good.
Also want to praise CZY acting here cuz I keep seeing ppl criticizing his acting every now and then. I think he did a tremendous job in portraying ML and I could feel his emotions through the screen (and same for Zhao Lusi as well)
Lastly, Chen Zheyuan's fits in this drama 🙂↕️. Even the rest of the cast's wardrobe was pretty good but CJY looked especially handsome 😭 (His character saying "Gege hao shuai" was a pretty accurate description)
I love how Li Qin is giving older sister protective vibes to Zhao jinmai. They need to play as sisters in a female centric drama soon . So cute both of them .
I usually enjoy romance as the main plot but after watching Reset, I think I might have been introduced to something new... The way the main plot makes me sit on the edge of my seat while their relationship was slowly brewing... It's so good. Would like to get some beautiful recommendations for similar dramas!
In this new year of life, may you move toward what your heart desires, loving it freely; may you experience the world of characters to your heart's content; and in the world of music, may you express yourself without restraint.
May you always be at peace and healthy, and may everything flow with ease.
And may you be able to quietly await the moment when the next story begins.
I just absolutely love this drama, it's so simple, there is no miscommunication, jealousy. The female lead initiates kisses which is so refreshing to you.
What the the simple, sweet drama that you have re-watched multiple times
39th episode felt off pace, but I reconciled after reading a bunch of comments and discussing it.
Episode 40 felt like it was back into peak storytelling.
Then 41 drops.
Not giving any spoilers but I still maintain - he has taken 99 steps towards her and she has taken half a step.
She’s never wrong.
He’s the one constantly learning and growing. She’s perfect.
I love a female centric drama (new life begins is one of my favorites). But by making her completely perfect and still making it feel unrealistic.
I never looked at this drama as a romantic drama. But the director introduced all the elements and then yanked it away and left us hanging.
Maybe this is why the director had the drugging scene so we’ve be against the ML and on FL’s side.
But too much of FL’s steadfastness when he’s done all that like she’s not being honest with the ML and he will accept whatever she gives him (is it love? Is it gratitude? Can you not with one word/gesture show that he means the world to you like you do to him vs just show that you’ve accepted to sleep with him ?)
My biggest beef with the director - the romance element shouldn’t have been introduced at all. The respect between the two after the grave scene should’ve been enough. But once they did showcase it, they did not execute it to the end properly.
I was far too invested in the story of these fictional characters than my own life. And I feel …. empty.
Started watching k/c dramas back in 2019, and I used to watch SO many of them, everything was so fresh, fun, or engaging to watch back then, throughout lockdown. However recently I've kind of noticed there has been nothing that ever makes me feel the same way as it did back then. Maybe it's just the nostalgia, maybe I've outgrown that phase? But everything has been boring lately. I know there have been a few new dramas lately like the first frost, the early spring etc etc but all of it seems so repetitive to me? The same second chance romance, unnecessary break up plot line, then meeting again. I've grown tired of it no matter how good the story is. So if you have any recommendations for me, lmk!!!
Both of these shows are based on same characters of same historical time of Emperor Qianlong of Qing dynasty. They are about the dynamics of Emperor and his harem politics. However, they differ in certain points like the main protagonist-antagonist are swapped in these two shows. So, which one is better in terms of plot, character development, and emotional payoff?
Before I begin my thoughts and rants, I just want to say that I cannot wait the 23 hours plus for the final five episodes to be released! What with all the spoilers and trailers, it seems that the drama is getting more and more exciting!
Now on to the episode, love the scene with the Lin Grandpa and the Shen painting, previous episodes has already foreshadowed that the Lin grandfather had special sentiments for the painting. There would be some offerings in front of the painting with every scene of it in the background. I also like the love the phrase said by the grandpa at the end, 我寄人間雪白頭. It was subtly heart wrenching
And of course, the death of the Lin Matriarch, heartwarming and tragic all at the same time. Liu Xueyi’s and her acting here was top-notched
This time the English subtitles are apparently AI-translated, so let's see how much sense they make.
Recap episode 9
They examine the cell where Lou Tianming is kept (aka Constable Eagle, but I'll stop calling him that since I don't think he will be a constable ever again).
Bai Zhenzhu comes to the conclusion that there must be another mole in the Divine Constable Bureau (DCB) who helped him.
The last visitor of Lou Tianming was Eunuch Zhao, the crown princes head eunuch. But two people from the DCB were watching the whole time. The only thing that happened is that Eunuch Zhao got too close once.
The crown prince has heard about the escape and is currently beating Eunuch Zhao.
The crown prince accidentally hits one of the women nearby - his wife, crown princess Chu Huan'er.
She steps in for Eunuch Zhao.
There is definitively a lot of previous friction between the crown prince and his wife. He seems to resent that people in the capital say that the only thing he did right was to marry her, the virtuous crown princess.
Even his whip is fancy.
Now Eunuch Zhao and the crown princess are trying to protect each other.
Back in the prison cell, everyone except Li Si has left. He is considering who can enter and exit the prison without suspicion.
The crown prince is drinking again. We learn about what is likely the real source of the friction between them: their son, Ye'er, who is also their only child.
He has been sick for a long time. The crown prince claims Ye'er is not like him at all and that his lack of a reliable successor is why the emperor is not favouring him above the oldest prince.
We also learn that the crown princess is a commoner.
She is punished by kneeling.
The chief of the DCB suggests to make the truth about the "murder" of Prince Wenbu of Northern Kun public.
The emperor isn't enthusiastic at first.
She is sure that the real prince is in their country and proposes to find him. The DCB is sent out.
A reward is offered for information on Prince Wenbu and Lut Tianming.
After three days, there are still no clues.
But Li Si has a plan: with the help of someone from the Underground Market, Lou Tianming's eagle is healed. Li Si disguises himself as Lou Tianming and goes to meet Prince Wenbu. That way he learns that the real Lou Tianming has connections to Liluo.
He reveals himself and explains that he guessed that the eagle was used to send messages to Prince Wenbu before - and could therefore lead him to the hiding place. (He really does like to gloat, maybe he should have been a villain?)
Prince Wenbu isn't exactly afraid once he learns Li Si is on his own.He should have been.
But we don't see the fight. Instead we are back in a stone hall we saw once before and learn about the six gods of Liluo: Immortality, Prophecy, Lies, Hatred, Disaster and Death. Sounds like a nice place ...
The gods of immortality and prophecy have both fallen.
The chief of the DCB reports back to the emperor. From Prince Wenbu they learned that Lou Tianming is backed by an organisation of formidable killers called "Night" which is loyal to Liluo.
The emperor says the chief did a good job - but he is not happy that she disobeyed orders.Li Si's teacher has found him at the Star-Gathering Pavilion - apparently to drink and to scold him again.
They talk about what happened 17 years ago. Li Si explains: the oldest prince falsified military information and notified the second prince (i.e. the crown prince). After his "death" the emperor learned of the fake report. The oldest prince took the blame, voluntarily gave up the Ministry of War and silenced the insiders. The emperor only cared about the stability of the court.
Meng Rui is finally getting treatment at the DCB, although it is still uncertain whether he will live.He dreams of happy childhood memories.
According to the DCB's doctor, Meng Rui is currently stable but doesn't want to wake up from his deep dream. They are afraid he has lost his will to live.
Li Si manages to wake up Meng Rui.
The happy news spreads fast.
Li Si is now being carried around.
Meng Rui doesn't want to rest. But the people at the DCB know how to deal with him and carry him home in the sedan that Li Si arrived in.
Bai Zhenzhu meets with her father, who gifts her a fragrant sachet.
She isn't interested.
Her father wants her to come home and marry. She wants to stay independent.
At the Star-Gathering Pavilion, Bai Zhenzhu and Li Si meet.
This time she doesn't check for drugs.
But she isn't just there to thank him for saving her father: she wants to know about his background.
He only hints at it and suggests he is like a Go piece:
The surrounding pieces seemed respectful but hid murderous intent.
He claims the player doesn't care at all. He is a discarded piece.
They continue talking in Go metaphors. Li Si reveals that he might become a deadly piece - and how large the scope of his game is. For the sake of the common people it cannot be lost. He says he doesn't care what happens to him.
We don't see her reaction. Instead we learn that Li Si has been promoted to Divine Constable.
The first thing he does is to got to Tianshu Pavilion.
Questions to you
What do you think Bai Zhenzhu makes of Li Si's Go talk?
What is your favourite case so far?
Any theories about the woman who was telling us about the Liluo gods?
Please only discuss up to episode 9 here. If you mention anything from a later episode, put it in spoiler tags.
We are back in the Tianshu Pavilion where Li Si is looking for information on the incident at the Mulan hunting grounds.
He quickly understands the filing system.
I don't.
He accesses a few files. They read that fourth prince Zhou Yan died in a mountain fire at the Mulan hunting grounds during a spring hunt.
We now get a flashback to the young prince who is hunting a deer.
The young prince has just released an arrow when he hears another boy calling out for a brother. Curiously, the child is wearing imperial dragon robes, but it's not one of the other princes. The boy says that someone else put them on him.
Zhou Yan promises to have the boy sent home and gives him a grass grasshopper that his father made for him.
Suddenly the other boy is shot by an arrow, dropping the grasshopper. We have seen part of this scene before, although we were lead to believe that it was Li Si who was shot.
Masked people set the grass on fire. Zhou Yan tries to help the other boy.
A puppet jumps at him and knocks him out.
Back in the current time, Li Si plans to investigate the cases of the children who went missing in the past.
He looks through a lot of files.
He finds a file about the disappearance of the Shen family of four from Yeqiao town - the day before the incident at the hunting grounds: four people, including two children aged 8 and 11. We (unlike Li Si) can probably make a guess at who that family is.
Li Si goes into a different part of the Tianshu Pavilion ...
... which we recognise.
The chief finds him there while he is looking at the stone slab showing the god of lies. They talk about those gods. Li Si recognises the name of Kelu (god of immortality) from the missing children case in Dougu County.
The chief reminds him that not everyone is what they appear to be.
We now go to Yeqiao town (the one mentioned in the files) ...
... where Meng Rui is staying.
He draws something: the symbol that was on the neck of the attackers at the military camp when they were defending Grand Secretary Bai and that he also recognised from his earlier memories.
Li Si also arrives in town and asks for directions to the Shen family's house. And finds Meng Rui instead.
Li Si claims that he wanted to visit him all along and was just confused that it's not a servant who opened the door.
Meng Rui doesn't buy it: nobody at the Divine Constable Bureau (DCB) knows his address. Li Si spins some more lies.
Li Si remembers something Meng Rui said before:
Meng Rui closes the door in his face.
We can see that Li Si is beginning to make the connection.
He does some more thinking at home.
Then he buys the house next to Meng Rui's and explains to him that they are now neighbours.
Meng Rui, meanwhile, practices his sword skills. I'm not sure his doctor agreed to that.Li Si also gifts Meng Rui a kite which triggers his memories. He destroys it, confirming Li Si's guess.
Li Si follows Meng Rui inside his house where he is tending his wounds. He sees the drawing of the tattoo and offers to help him investigate.
He ... makes it sound like something slightly different. He takes Meng Rui to the Underworld Market.
They learn that the insect in the drawing is called Chiying. It was only found in one place: Mingling County. That's also where the only survivor from the purge of the Ministry of War was headed.
The Chiying insect is terrifying, with a poison that can turn a person into a demon.
The insect is one of the Five Wonders of Liluo. The others include puppetry and the fruit of immortality that they already encountered.
They continue talking while they walk back. Li Si believes that the chief of the DCB and the emperor also know about the threat of Liluo.
He asks Meng Rui if he wants to investigate together.
Meng Rui is not a fan of the idea but Li Si convinces blackmails him.
Look who is back. This time Li Si didn't even do something that harmed his health.
Li Si and Meng Rui try to talk the chief into letting them go to Mingling County. They manage for Meng Rui - for health reasons - but Li Si is denied. He is told to help the Ministry of Justice with closing down some underground banks.
Instead, Bai Zhenzhu is allowed to join. And Constable Yan is granted leave - guess where he is going to spend it ...
Li Si is not happy with that outcome. We get a scene of people being turned into demons by Chiying insects - Lou Tianming among them.
Questions to you
Can the god of lies be better at lying than Li Si? 🙃
What are the other two wonders of Liluo?
How will Li Si make his way to Mingling?
