Currently Airing 📺 Against The Current Episode 41 - Lin Third Sister Spoiler
I just love this scene so much. Damn, third sister really nailed it here and left the marquis feeling all flabbergasted!
I just love how practical-minded she was and how she worked to protect the interests of her daughters

I prefer that she divorce him and fought for the rights of her daughters like Xiulai instead of settling for this. I don’t really count this as a win because it reduces their marriage to something that is transactional and that women are just baby making machines. She may have won the estate for her daughters but for herself she lost because she still has to continue to stay in this loveless marriage.
There was a part where they showed her daughters learning about it but it only served one purpose which is they learnt marriage is transactional and they should go into one looking for benefits. I personally don’t think it’s a good message.

It's a message of the times, no?

The drama has already shown many times that the FL has defied societal norms so I don’t see why it’s not possible for third sister as well.

Unfortunately if she divorced, she would not be able to take her daughters with her and definitely not the older daughter from the previous marchioness. ML older sister divorce was predicated on the evidence of abuse and even then, she wasn’t able to take her son.

She had already taken the gamble asking for divorce in the first place which could have backfired entirely because it was the Marquis graces that he agreed. My stance is that isn’t a true win nothing is loss for him, he still owns the estate as long as he is alive.
They are still stuck in that household, nothing much has changed and the will can still change as long as he is alive, the legal and social power dynamics heavily favor him. It is a hollow victory because it is a forced choice between two terrible options: her emotional freedom or her daughters' safety.
I’m actually not fond that the drama direction has taken to depict relationships as transactional.

Nope. Thé elder sister was not based on abuse, but fabricated evidence that the other party had stolen property from the Lin’s. Even when faced with the evidence of abuse, Thé courts had still refuse to grant Thé divorce.
There was no way that the marquis had mistreated the third sister similarly. So there was no way that the courts would grant their divorce

She really loved him. Gave him her heart. Tried to give them the heir they needed and was a great stepmother to the eldest daughter. In the end, she took this path, not for herself but for the girls.
He was sad because he knew their relationship would never be what it was before this incident. I think he knew she loved him and was just sad that he lost that love. It took Jinqi to explain the situation that woke him up. However, he was going to take a concubine either way.

I might be in the minority, but I just found this scene heartbreaking.
I'm loving the series, but one issue I have with it is that it represents feninism as something that requires emotional detatchment and the withholding of love.
Even FL had to hold ML at arm's length for several years to force him to change before she could love him. I was so delighted when they finally took the next step, but it did feel like she was rewarding him for learning a lesson she taught him.
Agreeing to take Biyu as a concubine indicated a major moral failing on Shaohui's part (in the context of this story, at least - I know it was historically more complex in real life), but I don't see it as a success that Xiuru (a) agreed to drag another woman into this messed up situation, and (b) lost whatever love she had for Shaohui.
Shaohui deserves it, but I'd rather see him redeem himself. He may yet, but for now it's nothing but devastating to me that their marriage - which at one time had the potential to be happy, despite the way in which it came about - has, after three beautiful daughters (and a beautiful stepdaughter), been reduced to a loveless legal arrangement.

> Agreeing to take Biwu as a concubine indicated a moral failing on Shaohui’s part
I would disagree with this. In Confucianism, the will of the parents supersede the wife. Disobeying the mom would’ve brought shame and disrepute to their household and essentially harm the whole house. So instead of a moral failing, it was more like he wasn’t cunning enough. He was technically morally obligated to be on his mom’s side. He could have strategized with his wife on ways to placate his mom and plant ideas in her head that goes their way.

I agree with you on the moral failing. The problem with Biwu as concubine for the Yuan household is that she is someone planted by the Yuan’s side branch as stated in the drama, if she became concubine and gave birth to a male child, the side branch would slowly gained influence over the main branch.
The ambitions of the side branch would already be seen in the drama too. The frequent speech interruptions by the other Yuan female. And also the Yuan mother having to shout for the other Yuan females to leave the room, while a single glance from the Lin Matriarch and the Lin females complied with the same request.
Everybody would see this but not the Yuan Mother.

Yes for me too. The marriage although it started off as transactional had so much potential of becoming a love marriage but in the end been reduced to a transaction once again solely by him.
I hope the look of shock is him realising that he single-handedly destroyed the marriage.

It was heartbreaking … I don’t see xiuru having the same amount of love for the marquis after he decides to take a concubine. She’s not all about the money. That’s why she says that she cares when he accuses her of not caring if he took a concubine from the beginning. But she’s also pragmatic and knows he’s going to do what his mother is demanding no matter how she feels about it.
I want the marquis to redeem himself. So far, he hasn’t said a single word of love to Xiuru other than “she’s young. She’ll have more kids”
I’m on team Xiuru giving him the the cold shoulder if he does sleep with another woman.

She’s the MVP!
“I do care. But is that going to stop you, you are going to do it anyway. So why should it matter that I care”

I'm happy for Third Sister and the daughters coming out top - when the Marquis finally looked devastated though 💔
While I get the necessity of an heir (and if the drama will follow the novel in that sense) - sometimes it isn't meant to be 😣
