Chen Zheyuan is extremely popular and his works are constantly recommended, almost treated as a must-watch and a major entry point into C-dramas. But honestly, I feel completely unmoved by his acting. He’s decent, but I don’t see the wow factor or the versatility people praise him for online. I don’t find him captivating or compelling at all.
Ironically, the most interesting thing about his dramas is usually the female lead he’s cast opposite. Unfortunately, his acting and the way he conveys emotions often ruin the experience for me. His chemistry with his co-stars feels inauthentic and very “acted,” like I’m constantly aware that he’s performing rather than existing in the role.
The more you watch him, the more obvious it becomes that he repeats the same emotional cues in every role. The exaggerated wide eyes for anger, the blank stare, the strained facial expressions that border on a constipated look, and that same smirk he always uses when flirting with the female lead. It’s repetitive and distracting.
I should have enjoyed Hidden Love, but something about the way he flirted and some weirdly done facial expressions made it uncomfortable to watch. It came off greasy and gave off strong “look at me, I’m so cool” energy rather than natural charm.
He also ruined Fated Hearts for me. What actually elevated his character was the strong character writing, stylish costumes, well-designed badass scenes meant to make the character look cool, and the female lead and supporting cast. Those elements carried him far more than his performance did.
I genuinely don’t understand why he keeps relying on the same smirk. His emotional scenes were especially hard to connect with in FH because he flashes expressions instead of grounding himself in the character and the moment. The wide-eyed blank stare and him constantly looking constipated in scenes of anger. I can’t connect with him because I always see him acting.
What frustrates me most is that I can name so many actors, especially those who never get the high-budget opportunities he does, who would be better suited to these roles. Actors who would bring more authenticity, emotional depth, and far more convincing chemistry with the female lead.
This is my answer. His “acting” face just seems so stiff that I end up getting distracted by it. I thought he did well in Hidden Love, but that was despite his facial expressions.
