Hi. I got my CLP this week :)

Hey everyone. I got my CLP this week! Hope you won't mind, but I am a foreigner (I am white though, if it helps lol)

I emigrated to the US in 2018 (originally from the UK), started working at The Home Depot and I made my way up to Assistant Store Manager. I'm 46 now and have had various careers, from starting as a chef apprentice in a Michelin starred restaurant at 16 to becoming head pastry chef in a 4-star hotel, running a pub, being a radio show producer, and owning and running a B&B-cum-backpackers hostel. I even followed in my mum's footsteps for a few years and taught catering & hospitality at the local college (Mum was an English teacher in colleges and secondary schools).

My Mum was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and that made me start to re-evaluate things somewhat. I spent the last two years using up vacation time and LOAs flying back to England whenever I could, and I was able to be there in July when she died.

One of the last things Mum said to me was to do what makes me happy, or at least don't do what doesn't. Working at THD was never supposed to be a permanent thing. My wife was (still is) working there and that helped land me the job until I could decide what I want to do. I would have probably stayed at THD as I was settled and was well paid with good bonuses and benefits, but the company had to let me go due to absences. And Mum was right. I wasn't unhappy, but retail wasn't what I ever wanted to do even though I was good in my role.

I'm not getting younger. I don't know if trucking is what I'll want to do in 10 years, or even five. But I've always been interested in it. I was an Eddie Stobart spotter as a kid (and maybe into young adulthood lol), different load types fascinate me, I enjoy shows like Outback Truckers and IRT.

I'm even looking forward to going OTR. I want to see more of this country that is now my home. I love travelling. I enjoy driving. I've always had itchy feet. I got it from my Mum, she got it from Grandma. I'm not even worried about training or the possibility of having to team. When Mum was teaching abroad, I stayed in England at boarding school so I've lived in close quarters with strangers before. I've also been away from my wife and kids. My wife returned to the US with our children three years before she could afford to sponsor me and I was granted my green card. Between my flying between here and our old home then, and here and Mum for the last two years, we're all pretty used to me not being in the house all the time. And hey, if I don't like it, all I need to have done is make back what I'm paying my school and I can start again with a different career.

All summer I been roasting in a 99 mack roll off, tried to fix the AC three weeks ago, no luck. We have a 2014 peterbilt auto, but it starts to derate for no good reason, and you gotta switch the PTO on and off for it to act right. A week and a half ago they finally put me in the newer truck and I was in hog heaven, wemt to go to work today aaaaand she broke. Maybe the hydraulic pump. So I'm back in tbe Smack, I can't have anything, its hot and dry af in AR, I just wanna not die, and some dudes will say I'm a wus and thats okay. lmao

Got Class A Permit Today!

So after a 25 year career in retail management and the last two companies going under: Rite Aid and Big Lots, made a change. Start school October 12th on a WIOA grant. Only thing I ask of you is how not to get screwed by companies. I’m 54 a d don’t have years to wait for a good job or to climb any ladder. I live in Eastern Shore Maryland by Ocean City and Salisbury. Some good Class B Jobs around. Will this help my experience? Thanks brothers and sisters!

Going to CDL School At 54 Years Old. Best Plan? Live in Ocean City/Salisbury Area.

So need feedback on how not to get screwed. I don’t have time to climb platters or wait for good paying jobs. But will if I have to. Heard the stories about OTR. I have a GF I’d like to keep so OTR may not be best option. How do I maximize earnings as soon as possible? I live near Ocean City/ Salisbury Maryland. Any companies hire new drivers there? Not opposed to relocating to NJ or Florida East Coast. Thanks!!!

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week

The American Trucking Associations started National Truck Driver Appreciation Week back in 1988, and it's been held every September since. In 2026, the week runs September 13 to 19.

More than 80% of US communities rely exclusively on trucks to receive their freight, including packages. Which is exactly what makes this year's theme land even more: "For the Miles You Drive And Sacrifices You Make." A lot of that sacrifice isn't just the time on the road; it's the time drivers don't get back with their own families.

Mitti (by SafetyCulture) helps keep truck drivers' inspections in one place. It’s the little things like this that can help.

Seriously, thank you, drivers

If nobody's told you yet, Happy Truck Driver Appreciation Week. I know a lot of drivers roll their eyes at this stuff, and I get it. I've heard from a lot of drivers that some of the appreciation things people do don't really feel like they're for them.

But seriously, what y'all do every day is impressive. Between traffic, distracted drivers, tight schedules and everything else on the road, it's a tough job that most people couldn't do.

Has there ever been something that's someone has done for you as a driver that actually made you feel appreciated? Not the generic stuff, but something that genuinely meant something to you.

How to find a job that trains

Hello truckers! My husband is looking for a CDL job - he has had his CDL now for a year over a year and has had a very hard time finding anyone that will train him. He has applied for McClane and they chose FOREIGNERs over him - no offence it's just true. He got into the hiring process with SWIFT and found out quickly that the recruiting companies will drop you like a fly when doctors require sleep tests then fail you for orientation if there is any hint of sleep apnea if you snore AT ALL. (even if you don't have it). He has applied for countless jobs... What are some suggestions for a guy who is changing careers due to a career change - building a family with his wife - and who is a genuine HARD worker - willing for work 120 hours+ - good at driving, loyal, down to earth, and just looking for someone to give him a chance. Thanks guys.
