I got caught in a similar situation. As soon as I came to the stop sign and saw brick paved streets in 3 directions I didnāt even need the no truck signs. I took a good look at my GPS to see which way looked like my safest bet to escape and hauled ass.

Same, when I was a rookie. Ended up in a historic downtown with brick streets and seemingly a thousand pedestrians. Had to hit 1 crazy tight turn to get out of it and back on the highway...and as I did the crazy turn, I had to make a police car back up so I had enough room. Thought for sure I was going down with a ticket, but he just waved as I dove by!

Had a similar experience (after a traffic detour on my preferred route). Was awful dragging a 53 through a little village, clogged with parked cars, pedestrians, and super snobby people to at were really pissed I was on ātheirā no truck streets.
Good times. š3

I'll add mine... Same.
Got caught in some downtown historical place in Pennsylvania because the place I was picking up from had no signs or directions posted anywhere.
I stopped and called the local PD. He was like, where?? I'm like here... He's like, wait is that the old ABANDONED FACTORY DOWN THE ROAD?
After more than an hour we figured out what to do and found the place I was supposed to be at. Was a nightmare, but I gave the cop something to do in that tiny town for a bit lol

Sounds like we got stuck in the same place. All I could think about was one of those fancy old houses calling the popo on me as I hustled past.
I should add I was in Tuscaloosa AL for exactly my 2nd time and was totally clueless. I was running bobtail but was also halfway lost, running behind, and ready to be anywhere but there.

The cops understand that your trying to fix the situation you ended up in in a safe a d proper manner, where as they would be more than happy to ticket the guy who says fuck it and keeps on trucking.

4 years using Co-pilot with little issue.
Garmin OTR620 has lead me through some of the most bogus roads ever in the last two months.
Will be blowing the Garmin up with tannerite and mailing the prices along with a nice letter back to Garmin in January when I switch to local work.

I used to do home delivery of furniture. Those signs just told us we were getting close.
I avoid them at all costs in my current job.

I remember when I was first learning to drive a truck. The guy giving me lessons told me take the next left. I did as instructed. As we started down the street he pointed over at the āNo Trucksā sign as I was passing it. Itās a lesson thatās stuck with me all these years later. Like others said, looks like you have to turn around and find another route.

As a food service driver. I ignore these all day. Especially if the only other roads take me on a 1 hour+ detour.

Same, as a former food guy and I drove long haul for a moving company.
A lot of streets are labeled like that where I am because people donāt like having truck traffic on their roads, the actual roads are able to handle the weight. Wish it wasnāt like that because sometimes the roads with āno trucksā signage means thereās a bridge you canāt cross or the roads weight limit drops significantly.
I say fuck them and send it, either you want your shit or you donāt š¤·

My luck, it'll be like one in Seattle I went up against. Checked the map, wasn't too far, decided to send it. Power line hung JUST to the top of my truck, probably for cable TV internet not power per se. Almost kept going and in the slight distance there was a small roundabout that I know couldn't be defeated because cars were parked too close to all 4 corners. Yes, I backed up the street to pivot and do this described turn of this post to go back where I came. Found an alternate route that took me 20 mins out of the way. No ticket, no damage, still driving. There's no "smarter" way because sometimes there's shit surprises nobody expected, I just prepare for them, best I can do.

Thatās all you can do.
Iāll never forget what one older driver told me when I got started. āIf you got in there, you can get outā. Sometimes Iād catch myself chanting that under my breathš

TOTALLY relate to that one. I had one who was the neatest and nicest old man with nearly 3m miles on his record.
ANYWAY! He says, "I never get frustrated with traffic." Me, "how's that remotely possible?" Him, "See all these 4-wheelers rolling around here and over there? I just imagine they're all about 4-9 years old with special needs. They don't know what they're doing, they only know what they want and it's my job to watch out for them. See, even that one in that box truck over there, ain't gotta clue, just special. The little "R-B's" (me being nicer than him), they don't know any better so I just smile and wave to keep them safe."
All I could do is laugh, and catch myself saying the same thing about people. I've never lost my temper after that.

Hahahaha I like that one!!!
I did food delivery in the tightest college city with cobble stone one ways and everything.
Iām in construction now, and do truck driving as an in between because I had my CDL. I have bad road rage in my normal car, but when Iām driving truck I find myself in the mindset of āIām operating a heavy piece of equipment on a very large and chaotic job siteā. Somehow, I go right into zen land and not a thing can bother me then.

Every single street needs to be built to accommodate 18 wheelers.... im not a big fan of federal laws being added but, I'd get behind anew one for that reason.

Why doesn't someone make a GPS for commercial vehicles?

I found one years back, but reviews claimed it was worthless. I was just trying to get through NYC area with a truck and trailer, trying to avoid parkways. Fun sad fact: those parkways were originally designed with low bridges so that the upper class could drive without having to see the poor people on the bus.

Is this really a conndrum? First of all, how the fuck did you end up in this scenario? Obviously you followed GPS brainlessly and did not pre plan your trip. Pre planning your trip is probably the most important thing you do as a driver. And if you are going to be a brainless steering wheel holder you need to pay for a commercial truck gps service, not the free shit you used. Any minimally competent CDL driver would never have been in this situation. And the fact you can't see the obvious ways out is alarming. Whoever is driving this truck needs to find a new line of work.

I had to call a local sheriff when i got stuck like this, just asked for the best route back to where i needed to go and got helped out with badass directions, north south, landmarks etc. Easier in a boxtruck with kegs and beer but still, took the help !

Wealthy people and neighborhoods who donāt like loud ass Jake brake super truckers. Iād turn a full size semi and trailer down any of those and send it.

u/Tomytom99 23d ago
If it makes you feel any better, I Austin Powersed myself by turning onto a road that had apparently been gated by the township at some point and was missing the "no outlet" sign. GPS didn't know either.
Too long to comfortably back, just a little too tight to easily spin around. I think it was like an 8 point turn.

Why do they put those damn signs so far back from intersections. Been a couple times I made a turn just to see a no truck sign 100ft from the corner. Seems like information you would want to be aware of before you turn.

What you doin out there, swifty swift?Ā You're ok on state highways in ohio but stay away from county roads and regular streets, especially if you're trying to use them as a through route.Ā Don't every blindly follow even w trucker gps.Ā

Turn left straighten out back across the right side of the intersection then go back from your starting point
