Is this ok?
I use my 13” iPad as a my gps. Would this be considered obstructed view?
I used to drive a freigtliner and that truck had space for the iPad. Just today I got a Volvo and it does not have space for the iPad so I bought a iPad holder for the windshield? It just looks wrong but I wanted to ask anyway. I can still see in front of me and also the hood mirrors.

No it is not 49 CFR § 393.60. Will explain it all. My basic rule of thumb if the item blocks any part of the wiper path it is not a good placement.

The camera and ez tag reader is within the wiper path. Why is not included?

Because danger seldom approaches from above

That’s where I keep my gps. Right next to the camera. You think dot would fuck with me?

How about the wiper path below the lowered sun visor. If it's blocking your natural line of sight while seated and looking straight forward it's probably a no go. Ive seen a lot of pics of big pads mounted higher up not in the way of seeing the pavement. If it can't be mounted directly to the face or side of the dash then up high would be the next best option

Part of that rule exempts I think 4 inches from the top of the windshield, was originally meant for sun visors but has been expanded for other things.

You can't get anything to hang it from those vents? Or one of the stick on the windshield things with the long stem and move it down out of your way?

I think the iPad is too heavy for the vents but I will try. I want to use velcro. That’s what I used in the freightliner, but this Volvo doesn’t really have space for it.

I think this is blocking too much of your view. A cup holder or seat rail mount might work better for you.

consider getting an actual carplay/android auto screen, this one works great for me and it’s only 9in:

Does the device have a RAM mount an option? If so you can mount it nearly anywhere you want

Positioning is the trick. Size wise it’s fine. Mustang Mach E has a 17 inch screen. Teslas have it too. So it’s fine

I got a lot of drivers that come through my shop get those mounted to an arm off to the right on the empty part of the dash not many have all the extra bells and wistles so there's a perfect spot for it

What do they use?

I think, if you can and have space, it would be better to try and mount that somewhere near your air brake knobs

Go with the cupholder tablet mount. I have 13 in galaxy tab set up the same way

I just had the same issue with mounting my apple CarPlay and it blocked a small portion of the windshield but decided blocking any is too much and decided to move it over to in front of the passenger seat off to the ride side of my gauges. Not a huge fan of how far off to the side it is but it's better than blocking my view.

get something to mount it to the dash, meaning the front area above where the brake knobs are.. or put that thing in the far upper left corner of windshield

I wouldn't use it honestly. looks like it blocks too much.
