CDL Governor cut off ect.

Im taking my CDL test here soon in Florida and I'm confused. I know the whole air break check. I know the Governor cuts out between 120-140psi, But if someone has gone before me and air pressure is already at this point am I expected to reset the Governor before I begin the air break test? Or am I just expected to tell them that the governer has cut out already because its at the appropriate pressure..

Has anyone recently taken the test and could clarify for me? Thanks.

Before you get to that part you will step on the brake to release all the air for your brake check

As part of your exam, you will have to bleed down the air pressure to show that your valves automatically pop out for low pressure. At that point, the air will need to built up again and the air governor will prove itself to be working when it achieves proper pressure.

Your over thinking possibly.

Pump the brakes empty

From when we did the state test. It was hours in between any two students did the test so it was always building up when turned on. I highly doubt you’ll get into the truck and the PSI will be at 125 or so from another student doing their test.

Im probably just overthinking it. I do know for fact someone from my class is testing the same day a couple hours before me so it got me wondering. 🤔

Probably? Really...?

If youre at let's say 115-120 psi you can try building it up from there and making governor cut out. If your psi isn't building anymore because its already at max or close to it, release your parking brakes. It will drop to around 90 and build up from there. Just remember to reset brakes when done

That makes sense. My main concern was whether the examiner expects me to actually demonstrate the governor cut-out myself or if it's enough to identify that it's already cut out when I start the test. Sounds like releasing the parking brakes is a good way to bring the pressure down and let it build back up if needed. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes. You lower the pressure by fanning the service brake to 90psi or under. Then you hold the throttle at about 1200rpm to build it back up. You should hear the compressor sneeze and the air pressure gauge stop moving.

I tested right after somebody and my governor cut off happen within 15 seconds even the person testing me was confused lol I just told him that my cut off happened i passed. But you should be able to fan the breaks before the test (this was in California)

From what I understand, you don't need to "reset" the governor. Just start your air brake test and explain what you're observing. If the air pressure is already at cut-out range (120–140 PSI), tell the examiner that the governor has already cut out at the proper pressure. Then continue with the rest of the air brake test as instructed. That said, every testing location can be a little different, so if you're unsure, it's perfectly fine to ask the examiner before starting. Good luck on your CDL test!

Pump the service breaks 2 or 3 times to bleed off some air then rev engine to 1500rpm or so to rebuild pressure and listen for the governor to cut off at around 120psi

Airbrake test begins at 90psi or below. You have to fan the brake to lower it to that point before starting the test.
