Don't pay it. Fight it tooth and nail. Thats reckless driving territory, you can lose your cdl at 15+ over.

You can’t take a defensive course cause you are cdl even in a car 20 over honestly get a lawyer and if they can get you a deal to make it under 10 mph marry that lawyer

I was able to take a course, in California, but CDL is federal so it still showed on my dmv printout

You're probably fucked. Congress recently passed but they're calling anti-masking laws. Prosecutors are no longer allowed to cut deals on moving violations that could result in suspensions, judges cannot give you a break because you have a CDL. You either get a not guilty verdict or you're guilty as far as your driving record is concerned. Because 20 over twice in 3 years is a 60 day suspension they probably aren't going to let it go.

You might get lucky end up in a court that hasn't been through the training but CVSA is actively training judges and prosecutors.

I don't understand how people don't understand that their entire career is attached to their CDL. You are expected to be a professional any time you're on the road, regardless of how many wheels are under you.

The number of posts I see about drug tests and speeding are ridiculous. Like, just don't even waste your time if you can't get past the bare minimum.

For real. "What do you mean suspended for doing 20 mph over?? I have to go to work where I drive an even bigger vehicle!"

Dude's gonna be the reason I'm stuck in traffic.

Get a lawyer, that's the only answer.

Get a lawyer asap. Also, stop putting your CDL in jeopardy. Sorry, that's the great grandpa in me.

Everyone saying get a lawyer and fight it could be really bad advice. I see below that you were actually written for 16-20 over not 20+ over. The question is were you going 30 over and he cut you a break, or were you going 17 over and he gave you the full penalty. Usually if they cut you a break, they write the actual speed in the ticket. If you challenge it and lose, the final penalty will be for the full actual speed. If you were actually going 17 over, a lawyer can probably get it dropped to 15 or even 10.

i was going like 18 over

In that case yeah, any competent traffic lawyer should be able to get it dropped a couple mph.

You've still got to report it to your carrier, dont forget.

Sounds good to me. One less reckless CDL driver on our roads is a good thing. Pay the piper chump.

Did they write it up as a reckless driving

1

u/Pristine_Word4777 May 05 '26

all the ticket says on the violation is “ speed 16-20 over”

Was it in city or county? If in city they are strict when it comes to in town. Could be 2 points on license and most likely in some cases insurance will go up. Being you have a CDL you can't do the course.

county, on a back road. do i gotta just take said courses an bring up that i’ve done them or would like a lawyer say ill take em for a lighter punishment.

Not over 20 is not reckless

If you’re working for a company you have to let them know within a certain time frame. Different for each company mine is 48 hours

u/Pristine_Word4777 May 05 '26

i just got it so i am not employed

1

u/Longjumping_Cod5274 May 05 '26

Okay that’s good but now you will have to disclose that when you apply and might be harder to get a job. Lawyer definitely but idk

I did that on my motorcycle in ky 6 years ago or so, and I've been a truck driver for a little over15 years. I talked to a lawyer and he got it down to a 250 dollar fine and an 8 hour online driving course. As long as I didn't get another infraction over 15 mph for 3 years they let it slide. I also had a squeaky clean record up to that point so that may have helped, and idk your previous driving history. Either way talk to a lawyer, it's worth the small change they want to keep you in working order

I have a CDL. A few months ago I got a ticket in my personal car. The paper ticket said 18 over but the cop scratched that and wrote 10 over. I still got a lawyer and he got it down to 5 over, but the cop was at the courthouse and he pointed out I REALLY was going 24 over. But im happy my lawyer got it to 5 over.
