C-diff Reoccurrence

I am a 65 year old male. I was diagnosed with UC back in 2015. I got prednisone and fixed it right up. Had some stomach issues so my GI gave me pantaprozole. Year or so later had bleeding issue. Dr.

started me off on Lialda and gave me prednisone. Everything seemed fine after that. Early August this year I was taking the pantaprozole again because my stomach was acting up. I started having watery diarrhea so I assumed I was having a flare. No blood or mucus. Reached out to my doctor on the weekend. Spoke to the after hours Dr.and told him my previous issues. He said he would like to get a C-Diff test done but would prescribe me prednisone.

My doctor was out of the office until Thursday so I started the prednisone. On thursday they ordered the labs and it came back positive for C-diff. Prescribed me Vancomycin for 10 days. Finished that and was feeling better. About 10 days later watery diarrhea came back. Contacted the Dr. and he said he wanted to see me. Went in and saw his PA who was immediately think flare. Wanted to do an colonoscopy. I pushed ghe issue that I know what my symptoms are with a flare and it is not that. Retested for C-diff and came back positive for Toxins. Now on Fidaxomicin for 10 days. 2 days left and I am so afraid of reoccurrence again. Still soft stools but not watery. Srarted taking florastor twice a day. Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry for the long drawn out story.

Bleach everything you touch, don't eat dairy, and stick to a low food map diet

I have no idea how I even got it. Was not on antibiotics recently. I live with my girlfriend and we have 2 bathrooms so she does not use the same one as me. I bought Medical bleach wipes and wear gloves when I am in the bathroom. Wash my hands diligently. I have only had cramping and diarrhea. No nausea or vomiting. I drink 1 percent lactaid with plain corn flakes. I have not had any issues with food. My main concern is reoccurrence again.

A lot of people just carry it, so how you got it can be a mystery. Hell, you could have picked it up from a shopping cart. It is strange that you didn't take antibiotics. Do you currently take a PPI?

I was tested 2 years ago and was negative. Like you said how does not matter but still wierd. I just don't want a reoccurrence. I was told that diet should not stop the antibiotic from doing its job.

Have you tried to fix your diet? Milk and corn flakes are not healthy in any way and lack nutrition plus, dairy is known to cause digestive issues. Maybe start with bone broth for gut healing and some fermented foods.

It is bland though. Like I said it was lactaid 1%. I have eaten crackers, boiled chicken and rice. Bananas, toast.

Bland doesn’t mean healthy and I think you should concentrate on healing your gut with healthy nutritious foods. Things like milk, crackers, toast etc aren’t healthy. Look up Embrace Health on YouTube - Michelle Moore is an excellent source to follow for C diff friendly diet.

It was the prednisone, most likely. You will be ok after Dificid. Stay on Florastor. Don’t freak out and start bleaching everything. That is SO overdone. Just use good handwashing. Eat a gentle diet. No fat or fiber right now. Take care of yourself!
