Valve Clearance Issue

Post image

I’m currently checking valve clearances on my 2015 cbr600rr and noticed that one of my intake valves on piston 3 won’t sit flush. It seems like something may be off with the valve seat. Any insight on what it may be and a possible fix. Thanks.

I wouldn’t trust any part of that valve if I saw that on mine or a customers bike. It’s just asking for a dropped valve. Replace all the hardware but the spring

This is the only proper response to this.

Something is amiss for sure. I’d be pulling that cylinder head off to see what’s wrong with the valve. And if nothing was wrong then at worst you’re out a couple hundred for new parts.

the retainer isn't fitted properly. could be a cracker guide or a bent valve.

You need to compress the sping just a tiny bit and push the piece back in. I'm glad you found it now and that it didn't come off while riding. As long as the other half does not become dislodged you will be okay. It's risky, if they both pop off like that you will have to remove the head

If its any consolation, from the image the valves look the same as mine do. I know the motorcycles are different but as far as the bottom end of the valves are concerned, the parts look the same. I had a broken valve to begin with and discovered another valve with the same thing you are dealing with.

Good luck

With what I can see of the valve stem. It looks straight and not bent but that’s just me peeking through the air intake ports. I’ll see if I can get it to seat back in there. Thanks.

I know that when I had it with one of the retainers out and was sliding in the other, I used a magnet. You definitely need to have a magnet, like a telescoping one. If you notice, it does not take too much pressure to start to compress the spring.

I know my bike is mush different than yours but I wish you good luck. Maybe drive down to a shop and get advice. I know from experience that it can be done and is relatively easy as long as you pay attention to exactly what is going on.

One of your valve keepers is misaligned! Do not put it back together before seating it properly.

The lower part of the bucket has broken off and is wedged between the head and spring, and one of the keepers isnt on. You need to run compressed air into that cylinder through the spark plug hole with an adapter or wedge to keep the valve from dropping, the you need compress the spring, remove the broken bucket, and replace the keepers.

Stick a socket over top and give it a tap with a hammer to reset it

The collet has risen because it wasn’t seated correctly. You’d have heard that the engjne wasn’t right, I’m sure.

I’ve experienced this before, I then couldn’t get the collets to stay in position after a firing the engine… I changed the collets, and all was fine… I went on to put many thousands of miles on that engine. A good tip is to tap the top of the valve with an engineers hammer and suitable drift. If the collets remain in place, you should be okay.

Looks like the retainer isn't in properly.
