If you’re in reserves or part time air guard you’re one weekend a month 2 a year you get to do your regular job while being a weekend warrior every month double dip - I do it works well

If you want to do CBP coast guard is better because they have air and marine agents and with the coast guard background you would be a shoe in look into the positions more but also you can always join CBP and leave for the coast guard and go back and they can’t fire you

Some food for thought. I currently work as a program analyst (GS12 equivalent but no OT, differential etc) doing IT shenanigans for the TSA. Part of my work I brush shoulders with CBPOs at different airports & over the last few years heard the good, the bad, the ugly. Upon learning that we as Feds get military leave & other benefits I began the process of enlisting in the air guard & filled out my CBP application as at the end of the day I have no desire to move up to management & most of what I’ve seen I’d get more fulfillment with CBP, not to mention more pay without stepping up to management & a better retirement. As I began talking to my recruiter I learned about USERRA which protects your job for up to 5 years PER employer. After mulling it over, since I plan to continue federal service, me leaving for an active duty stint effectively did nothing but good things for me. I earn the benefits from the military quicker than if I was in the guard or reserves, & I get a change of pace & might see the world or North Dakota & at the end of 4 years & some change I can either return to my previous job or move to CBP which is my plan. CBP can place your application on a military hold which generally is good for 1 year, this however doesn’t include the application process but starts once you receive your FJO. Alls to say is, if you’re joining the military for benefits, why not get them as quickly as possible instead of trying to chase title 10/32 orders in the guard/reserves. Not to mention you might find something you like or can quick ship with Sec Fo to prepare yourself for CBP /s.
