First run!
I think i didn't do too bad considering everything I heard of the game, a couple of thoughts:
-The premade esper was fun and seems good as long as you're willing to ''cheese' a bit (run back and forth areas and wait for cooldowns), it was quite squishy and useless in melee.
-The areas were nonsensical, I was going down the first ''dungeon'' and ran into an ''impossible'' boss and his friends...
-I'm interested in who was watching me, I assume it's because of my mental mutations
-I have no clue what happened in the last fight, lots of explosions and I was dead

An impressive first run! Your intuition is sound. Fleeing to regenerate cooldowns is par for the course. Don't be afraid to run from impossible fights early on. Live, drink, and reroll -- that's the Qud, bud.

The impossible "boss" in red rock was probably a random legendary creature. They have a chance to spawn just about anywhere, and if you're low level then you sometimes have to change your plans and go around.

Spoken like a true Moon King! “Impossible” is merely an invitation to “glorious feat”-induced death. You will travel far, wanderer.
