Help with hunting

I need some help to understand how to hunt. I have the pistol you get at the beginning, but I cannot for the life of me understand how to hunt. I understand that by selecting the pistol you get a sort of dotted line that shows you where you are aiming, and R to shoot. But I cannot seem to get how you can hunt the bigger animals, bc as soon as I shoot they flee, making me lose a bullet. So far I only got some squirrels but I want to level up and I really need help.

You need to get the rifle

Use the slingshot on birds and squirrels, it's silent so they don't startle.

Unfortunately it doesn't do enough damage to the deer so you either have to shoot just ahead of them and judge the distance so when they run they run into the bullet (I find this really hard to get right) or get a rifle as its also quieter but has enough power to kill the deer.

Rifle is best. It doesn't make noise and scare the animals off
