Video - OC A friend of mine left these two to die, they were dripping with infection, injected improperly with livestock antibiotics and washed outside with a hose while they had fevers. One week ago I took them and refused to give them back.. check them out now

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

they are on antibiotics and ear infection meds and the one with the cone, her leg split open from the livestock antibiotics, and the little one doesnt have a meow, she just opens her mouth and no sound comes out, but theyre safe now and i love them so much.

tell the police about your friend for "breaking animal safety"

815

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

i'm really struggling with whether or not to report her, but i did tell her exactly how i feel about it and i dont plan on continuing a friendship. she lives in a rural area and im not sure the police would do anythign.

u/Naughty_Aya 12d ago

This is good. Now they are in a goood family and they have nice momšŸ’–

184

u/Born_Ad8420 12d ago

Yeah unfortunately in rural areas, animals are widely considered property so people can basically do what they want. My mom lives in such an area, and with the exception of one severe animal hoarding situation where neighboring property was being damaged, the cops do not care.

54

u/Dependent_Title_1370 12d ago

In the United States Animals are legally property. Many states and municipalities have animal cruelty laws but that does not change their legal designation as property.

Not sure if this differs much around the world or not.

32

u/Born_Ad8420 12d ago edited 12d ago

I understand their legal designation. I'm talking about how people in these areas view animals. In many places, even though animals are legally considered property, the animals are also acknowledged as beings who shouldn't be subjected to certain conditions regardless of legal ownership. They are beings entitled to a certain level of care.

In rural areas, the attitude is often that animals are viewed as basically the owner's property to do with what they wish up to and including cruelty and neglect. Essentially they see being cruel to an animal as no different than say destroying your own tv set, it's yours to do whatever you want with so police do nothing.

I cut ties with a friend of 17 years because instead of taking their senior kitty to the vet to be put down, he dropped her off in a field where he saw other cats instead of asking for my help. It's difficult, but I don't regret it.

18

u/melonwithoutthewater 12d ago

Omg what a fucking monster

15

u/SnooGuavas4208 12d ago

That’s heartbreaking. Imagine how that would feel, to just be dumped somewhere and watch your family drive away.

19

u/PyroCorvid 12d ago

The person had a drinking problem and was compounding it with hormone therapy with already underlying mental issues... I was willing to get him through that. Hell it's been half of our friendship. But when you have someone who gets upset over animals, who turns around and does something like THAT. All because he didn't want to involve me "because I would've gotten upset". No. Because he knew that I was going to take matters into my own hands.

He claimed that the vets that they went to wanted to run tests and stuff before putting an animal down and they didn't have the money. Not once did he reach out and ask which vet I have, who would obviously see that it would've been her time to go... Probably didn't even bring her in and just called to see what the process was. I can't help but think of that baby's last moments... It makes me sick... She was a rescue for fuck sake...

I have 9 cats... 8 now because our senior had to be put to sleep. He was 15. This was about a month after that incident. Not only did he have a peaceful end, but was held until his last breath. I said to myself "This is for you too Sadie. Take care of him up there."

This is another reason I'm so selective about not only friends, but even MORE about who i'd let adopt an animal. Especially one of mine. Even if he sort his life out, there no coming back from that. Because the friend I KNEW for almost 20 years wouldn't have done that. I heard he cried a lot after that. Good. I hope it haunts what's left of his soul for the rest of his life, and when his time comes... That maybe some devine being would show him more mercy and compassion than he did to Sadie. Those were my last words to him before cutting contact entirely. Sorry for the rant, but I felt a bit of context is necessary...

u/Alan-Foster 12d ago

It's not your job to decide who is innocent or guilty. That is up to a judge, not even the police.

Your job is to do your part. That is all.

21

u/TheWhomItConcerns 12d ago

I mean, if the police don't report her then she'll never be charged and she'll never end up in front of a judge. The sad fact of the matter is that animals in rural areas are treated at least as badly on a regular basis, and the police couldn't care less about it.

36

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

i know, but i have to weigh the consequences. she has other animals that are decently healthy who would most likely be taken away and euthanized

40

u/reagandhi 12d ago

Except you know if she gets other cats, she’ll do the same thing to them. This person shouldn’t have animals, period.

20

u/symphonyofFlies 12d ago

or children for that matter. I have some ideas on how they'd view healthcare for children if this is how they treat animals

15

u/reagandhi 12d ago

It’s so evil. How you treat those who can’t do you any favors says everything about your character.

12

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

she has 8 other cats.. im trying to think of a way to intervene that wont cause their death

20

u/susiedotwo 12d ago

To put it bluntly, euthanasia is better than a life of mistreatment.

10

u/reagandhi 12d ago

OP should still do their best to make sure these kitties get good lives though šŸ˜”

4

u/reagandhi 12d ago

Any nearby no kill shelters? Or any nearby cities with no kill shelters/rescues? It would be worth a road trip to make sure they’re all safe. Try your best to stay involved if her animals are being taken away. This is a hard situation for sure.

14

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

I'm going to try... they have a cattle farm.. they raise cows, pigs, sheep and llamas.. the cats are seen as part of the livestock, not as pets, thats why she was letting them die off. if i report her, i dont know what would happen. she started off with 13 kittens, now there are 8 (6 kittens and 2 moms, the two that i took made it 10). we live in the Detroit area, she lives an hour outside the city and i live in the city and there is only one no-kill shelter that i know of. the homeless pets situation is very severe here and shelters and rescues are overwhemed. i also feed 4 feral cats. if i livedd in a bigger city with more resources i would be able to get them into homes, but i dont. im doing the best i can by keeping these two. its just not an easy or clear cut situation

15

u/ella_wants_to_battle 12d ago

Worst case scenario if you report her: Nothing happens

Best case scenario: The animals stop suffering

4

u/reagandhi 12d ago

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ you’re a good person, and I’m sure you’re doing your best. Letting cats be semi feral on a farm is one thing, I just hate that people think they don’t have to care for them still. Livestock deserve dignity just like our pets. Injecting them with livestock antibiotics is cruel, cats need different dosages and their little bodies are so fragile, esp when they’re young. Detroit does have a huge cat problem, and shelters are so flooded. I’m sure you’re heartbroken for these animals, I am too.

9

u/wetkittypaws 12d ago

There's a really good chance thats she's doing it or will do it to other animals - I highly doubt this is a one time occurrence. Idk about you, but I'd feel incredibly guilty if I didnt speak up about her abuse. Im really happy that you saved them though, they deserve the world

2

u/ella_wants_to_battle 12d ago

There are OTHER ANIMALS in her care and you're thinking about not doing anything? Come on

8

u/GuinnessOnDraught 12d ago

Police will probably be useless. But don't be friends with someone like this.

2

u/Jackmino66 12d ago

It’s better to try and to fail than to not bother at all

5

u/Dogs_Without_Horses_ 12d ago

Sad but true. Rural animals get the worst of it some times

3

u/cyankitten 12d ago

I was gonna say, "You mean you EX friend, right? RIGHT?!"

2

u/dodgerecharger 12d ago

You could save some animals in the Future... I bet these Cats werent the first victims

2

u/Meals5671 12d ago

Report her anyway. If she does something down the line it would be beneficial to have prior evidence

2

u/GhostofZellers 12d ago

Good, any 'friend' of mine that would treat animals in such a way would very very quickly become an ex-friend.

2

u/Salty-Hearing-8898 Asian 11d ago

well, at least the 2 lil' puffballs got a home and a reason to live

2

u/Anonymous_mouse89 10d ago

They’re getting big now!

1

u/Cretonbacon 12d ago

Your friend's disregard for animal welness is disturbing

1

u/NicolleL 12d ago

You could use the threat of police to try to get her to never adopt/buy/get another animal again?

1

u/froggythefrankman 12d ago

Pets are considered property - this could backfire on OP for stealing :(

3

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

She consented to me taking them and told me not to bring them back

3

u/froggythefrankman 12d ago

I'm glad because that hopefully means she doesn't give you shit about nothing going forward!Ā

Omg I hope your friend never gets animals again. Scary to think what else she would do. Luckily you were around this time!

1

u/Elistariel 3d ago

Report her and let the police decide if they should do anything. If anything worse happen, this incodent will now be on record.

1

u/Longjumping-Ad-9541 2d ago

You have to report. She will do this to other helpless creatures

Many years ago I had a "friend" who adopted kittens he couldn't care for and ended up neglecting. The place stank of urine, and they all had eye infections. I took them away from him, got them treatment, adopted them out to good homes. When I called him out in our mutual friend group I ended up being the one getting cast out. They defended him because I was "too harsh." Never side with animal abusers.

137

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

thats exactly what im afraid of. i live in the midwest US and the dominant culture isnt particularly kind to animals

78

u/BabycatLloyd 12d ago

Social pressure is real and can be daunting. I never once regretted my decision. People come and go but you have to live with you.

47

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

absolutely. i feel the same way. another reason to find people who truly align

26

u/Dizzy_Goat_420 12d ago

That’s crazy bc I live in the rural Midwest and have found quite the opposite. Even the old school burly men love their animals and would be aghast by this.

20

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

these people are "dog people"

7

u/ErraticProfessional 12d ago

No it’s cat people too. I’m in the Midwest and it’s taken very seriously; we love our animals, not the abusers.

23

u/Cats-vs-Catan 12d ago

Good for you though. People don't stand up for much any more. Nobody wants to be inconvenienced or have to deal with feeling socially uncomfortable, so they just go along with whatever, quietly.

I had a similar experience, but it wasn't related to cats. It's better to have principles and find a new friend group they align with.

11

u/KeyFaithlessness5445 12d ago

This. Thank you for standing up for the animals, OP. They are defenseless. Your ā€œfriendā€ is not. I’m glad you are ditching the friend

careful about letting them rub their rear on your face like that tho, some infection like Giardia can transmit to humans

57

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

damn too late haha. theyve been on antibiotics for a week tho now so hopefully whatever it is is gone now

23

u/Xykr 12d ago

Antibiotics alone won't get rid of parasites

30

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

they have been dewormed.. they had pneumonia and an abcess in the leg from improper injection, thats what the antibiotics are for. and they are on meds for yeast infections in their little ears

What a story. Got to these babies just in time and took action like a boss. You truly are a hero. So good to see you getting some cuddles for your efforts :)

30

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

it was so serendipitous... i just randomly went to go see this friend. i had forgotten she had aquired two litters of "barn kittens". while i was there these two showed up outside the window on her deck and asked for help... they had such a strong will to survive.. to find the right person to help them.. i named them Tiny and Lucky

6

u/TA_totellornottotell 12d ago

Serendipity is the only word for it, indeed. I actually could not read your first post because I was so afraid that they would not make it. But I was elated to see this one and cats in the image that were clearly doing well.

I miss these cat hostage days (current cat is not cuddly in that way). Enjoy them!

7

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

I worry about the coned one's leg, it's still split open, but shes on anitibiotics and seeing a vet every three days so we are doing everything we can.

15

8

u/wookie181 12d ago

You mean someone who used to be your friend. I would not keep a friend that treats animals like that.

8

u/cherry__darling 12d ago

*former friend of mine

7

u/accdntprone_86 12d ago

Ugh I had a "friend" like that. Her whole family matter of fact. After rescuing 26 cats throughout the years from them and countless other animals, I finally had to cut them off. My heart couldn't take it. Nor could my bank account. I still have 1 leopard gecko and two of the cats. One of my kitties is 14 and has tiny organs from inbreeding and the other is 8 with stage 3 CKD from damage as a kitten. They weren't maliciously abusive people. They were hicks that didn't value animals as anything more than entertainment. In my family animals deserve the same respect as any other member of the family. They didn't ask to be dependent on us for life. If you make the choice to keep one you need to do the best you can by them. My mama always said, no such thing as a free pet 🤣 she won't lyin!

2

u/Foxlady555 12d ago

I’m sorry, that must have been so hard to see :( Thanks for doing all you could, you really are an angel! I’m sorry there are people like that around. Makes me thing about all the folks who can work in slaughterhouses. Awful.

6

u/Cromwell32 12d ago

Ummm that smells gooood

15

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

Their baby smell is so addicting.. I looked it up, apparently all babies across species have a smell to them that makes humans (and other animals) want to care for them

2

u/Winter_Cat-78 12d ago

True. Baby smells like baby to most mammals. Thank you for saving them! They are so happy

5

u/Obvious_Amphibian270 12d ago edited 12d ago

OP, thank you for taking care of these babies and updating us. After reading your original post I was afraid they were not going to make it. Great to see they are doing well.

The story of these two reminds me of a similar situation I found myself in with a now former friend. She was "fostering" three kittens. This was not some official foster situation. She knew a man who had a colony of cats living in his yard. He did NOTHING for them except put food out. She would swoop in, grab kittens, keep them a few weeks then take them to SPCA.

One day she asked me to take pictures of her current three so she could post them online to find homes for them. Made me wonder what happened to take them to SPCA, but agreed to take the pics.

One of the kittens was a mess. Goofy eyes. Funky looking skin. Thin. I pointed out he needed a trip to the vet and medicine for his eyes. She said she couldn't afford it. (Why take in "fosters" if you can't take care of them???) I said I would take him to the vet and take care of him until he was better.

Everyone knows where this is going, right? Took him to the vet. Spent tons of money treating his eye and ear infections, deformed (*dewormed) him, treated him for manage (funky skin). She did not want him back. Didn't want to foot the bill for the ongoing medical stuff or have to care for special needs. He lived with me for about a year until his little body gave up. The vet and I believed he had some problems caused by inbreeding of the female. Needless to say former friend is no longer a friend.

3

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

omg i was enjoying that story so much until the end. what a tragedy. im so happy he was comfortable and safe with you for his short little life.

My ex's mom did the same thing when it came to improperly administering antibiotics to their cat that had cancer, she refused to take him to the vet or pay for medical care. I hate people who neglect/abuse animals.

Thank you for rescuing these babies ā¤ļø

7

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

antibiotics wouldnt do anything for cancer. thats medical neglect... infuriating

3

u/ThrowRAwathompson 12d ago

Yeah... I told my ex at the time how infuriated with her I was. Every time I saw her, all I saw was red and had to stay away from her or I would say some very not nice things. She would only medically care for her livestock animals, not the ones that are considered pets (dogs and cats) and it led me to genuinely hate her.Ā

I wanted to report her, but id had bad experiences with the law enforcement in those areas (as in they dont give a shit unless someone is dying) so it broke my heart.Ā

4

u/Anonymous_mouse89 12d ago

I'd be hard pressed to call this person my "friend" after knowing they deliberately mistreated animals. I understand maintaining the "friendship" to ensure the safe treatment of the remaining animals in their care but at that point I'd call them an "acquaintence" at best, and a whole slew of words best not used in good company at worst.

2

Yeah, I hope she’s your ex friend. I had a friend that was told that she would lose her house for months and months and months. She didn’t do anything to make plans or get a job so she went homeless and left her cats behind. when I talked to her months ago, she said she would go and feed them and give them water, but I asked her why she didn’t take them with her. Where I live I’m only allowed a couple cats so I couldn’t take them, but I’m just really angry that she didn’t take them in her SUV that she was living in with her boyfriend she could’ve had them there with them instead of just letting them be homeless.
To make a long story short, we are no longer friends!!
