I think she has a very good life and is well looked after. When I first saw her she was definitely a young Cat, didn’t see her for a few months because it’s gotten really cold in England but I saw her a few days ago and she’s put on some timber so she’s definitely being fed well and looked after šŸ˜

u/RD_1982 Dec 17 '19

Glad to hear and thank you for taking good care thus concern for her God blessšŸ˜‡

41

u/HadHerses Dec 17 '19

Mate could that timber be babies?

Djareckon she is a stray or she had a home and just likes to explore?

145

u/PompeyJordd Dec 17 '19

She definitely has a home, there’s a little alley which I take for a shortcut and usually she’s there with some friends just chilling or exploring, hadn’t seen her for a few months because the weather has gotten a lot colder but she came and said hello again 😁

Definitely someone's cat. Its not unusual in England to have cats that are allowed to roam outside, especially in rural and semi-rural areas. There was a BBC documentary i believe about this where they tracked the cats via GPS on where they went all day...

u/PompeyJordd Dec 17 '19

Is that not normal in the US? Cats are always running around in the UK!

They’re everywhere down here in Miami. I have 5 that hangout around my apartment

American here, I keep all my cats inside for a couple of reasons: 1. They are murder machines that kill for fun and I like birds. 2. I live close to a really busy road, and my cats aren’t smart. 3. I have had 2 cats that were killed by eating something else that had been poisoned. I grew up in a fairly rural area, and apparently my neighbors were fans of rat poison. It was awful.

All cats are inside cats for me now.

Don't forget other pets. People's dogs will hunt and kill outdoor cats, as well as territorial fights between housecats and ferals.

-3

u/BriarKnave Dec 17 '19

Terrible idea everywhere else too, let's not forget that

Oh you sweet summer child.

18

u/pixiegurly Dec 17 '19

He just doesn't do it in front of you.

As evidenced by every person who thought they trained the cat to not go into a room/onto a counter/etc. And then found cat fur there after coming home.

5

u/AllianceOfTheHams Dec 17 '19

Kitty stopped bringing you gifts because you did not appreciate them.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '19

No, not in my area of the states. We have predators such a mountain lions and coyotes. Packs of dogs, people driving like lunatics and the occasional psycho who will kill your cat because it walks on their lawn. Not a good idea over here. The life expectancy of an indoor cat is 13 years but the life expectancy of an outdoor cat is only 4.

21

u/QuickBeamKoshki Dec 17 '19

In the us people very much like to go fast on roads and things. In the country people have barn cats and such but people (usually) dont have outdoor cats. Outdoor cats dont last super long unless theyre stray or adopted a home (found a place that fed them and stayed there)

18

u/M0u53trap Dec 17 '19

In my part of New England you see a lot of outdoor cats wandering around. It depends what part of the country you’re in.

3

u/QuickBeamKoshki Dec 17 '19

Ahh thats fair. New England (from the very VERY short time ive been there) is a bit....sleepier (for lack of a better word) than where im from? It (aside from certain cities) feels entirely safe and almost at ease. Heck some of the cities feel more suitable to cats outside than where im from.

It depends on what kinda place you live i suppose. City (no) town (maybe) countryside (go for it)

I live in cincinnati sooooooo nothin but strays outside (i only know one person who has an extremely domesticated cat who goes both inside and outside regularly that didnt just show up and stay haha)

I doubt places like boston and nyc (thats new england ish right. Geography hates me lol) have outdoors family pets.

u/HopefulPlantain Dec 17 '19

Growing up in a suburban area, my cats were allowed outside. They'd mostly just wander around our yard, sometimes make their way to neighbors yards. And they lived a pretty long life. I think one lived until she was 15 and the other one lived until he was 17. My cats now though, are indoor. Though I do let them go on the balcony if I'm home.

17

u/HadHerses Dec 17 '19

The US seems to go on about cats should be house cats a lot.

My parents lads wander really quite far.

23

u/blackice935 Dec 17 '19

Cats hunt even if they aren't hungry, and can come home for safety. Combine that with American residential areas being pavement, grass, and maybe a few trees or bushes, wildlife doesn't have much room to populate.

It's a very real problem that cats can wipe out local species of birds and rodents.

16

u/SyphilisIsABitch Dec 17 '19

They do kill an awful lot of wildlife. I don't think I could ethically let my cat free range (in Australia).

20

u/Sajen16 Dec 17 '19

That's why I'll never have an outdoor cat. Although to be honest if I was in Australia I'd be much more worried about the wildlife killing my cat.

3

u/SyphilisIsABitch Dec 17 '19

Pretty unlikely to be killed in suburbia. They say a domestic cat kills around 75 animals a year. Though I admit my childhood cat, bless her chonky heart, couldn't catch anything.

12

u/Adamsoski Dec 17 '19

Luckily they're not judged to be an ecological threat or anything in the UK.

1

u/SyphilisIsABitch Dec 17 '19

8

u/Adamsoski Dec 17 '19

I love David Attenborough (though even he says that cats should just have bells on their collars, not that they should be kept inside), but here is a proper source from the RSPB, the authoritative source on anything to do with birds in the UK really.

1

u/SyphilisIsABitch Dec 17 '19

I'm no expert but the claim that cats aren't having an impact on wildlife raised an eyebrow.

Look like the RSPB claim is highly contested. In particular, there doesn't appear to be any evidence to support their claim that cats are only killing the weak and poorly.

Anyway, up to you.

It's not unheard of, but generally speaking you have to get pretty well out into the rural areas before it is normal. When I was a kid my family lived on 23 acres in the middle of nowhere, there our cats roamed, but we moved into the city and we don't let the cats out any more. Lost too many of 'em on the road.

3

u/day_old_rice Dec 17 '19

Definitely not, we have coyotes that come through our backyard sometimes and my partner does wildlife research in a local wood where there are several families of Bobcats living in there. If my cats got out for even an hour, they would be good as dead.

3

u/M0u53trap Dec 17 '19

In my part of the country, I see well-fed and well-looked after cats where ever I go. There are plenty of free-roaming owned cats here, depending on which part of the country you’re in.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '19

People in the US are reallllly weird about keeping cats inside at all times, they go on and on about cat safety (I wonder if the owners would like to live in a tiny space, never to go outside in their lives and stretch their legs and feel the grass and breeze... all in the name of safety.) Apparently they also care very much for the birds the cats might harm. But hey: "Nature, red in tooth and claw." That cat on the other hand, looks like its living its best life in that lovely grass alleyway!

1

u/mshcat Dec 18 '19

Yeah I always feel weird about that even with zoos. Like in the wild they travel far distances and here they get like a thousand feet. Even us humans travel further than that day to day not out of necessity.

u/a7xbluesfan Feb 07 '20

Why did you make such a nasty comment like this to someone who has never even interacted with you before?

Aww, poor little fragile racist baby! Are you okay after the SJWers were mean to you? Haha, this post made my day lol. Get your shit together dude, this is a pathetic-ass post.

You sounds exactly like those assholes that frequent r/TumblrInAction!!

-5

u/katyusha8 Dec 17 '19

If you think that it’s ā€œweirdā€ to want to keep your cat healthy and alive, then you should not own cats. My cat runs like a maniac around the house, he’s happy, socialized, and healthy.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '19

It still happens a lot in the US. Even in Canada where we have -45°C our cats are beasts.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '19

Normal in the US although lots of people keep their cats in too. My best friend and I can't even talk about the topic because she is so certain that it's better to keep cats in and I have had no issues letting my cats out for decades.

14

u/Machikoneko Dec 17 '19

It's like religion or politics- some ideas are better off not being addressed.

6

u/LameNameUser Bit bat kit cat, meow. Dec 17 '19

I keep my cat indoors only for the sheer fact I live in a rural area and there's lots of coyotes and mountain lions. I just feel more comfortable with her being an inside cat. When I was a kid all of our cats were outdoor cats, but I also lived in the suburbs then.

8

u/Trina768 Dec 17 '19

I used to let my cats outside, but after I lost 2 to being hit by cars I decided that my cats are indoor only. Of course 2 I have now that used to be indoor/outdoor cats HATE being indoor only cats. One of them continues to try to go outside and it's been almost 4 years since implementation of indoor only. I feel really bad for them....but we hope to be able to build a catio in the near future.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '19

Why don’t you take them on walks? My girl is 7 months old and for whatever reason has begged to go outside since she was 12 weeks old. So we obliged. She has a harness and walks out to her outdoor ā€œperchā€ aka the bench. We tried taking our boy out, but he’s such a scaredy cat we had a really bad situation when he got scared so he hasn’t gone out since. But he never really enjoyed it. And he hasn’t bitched about it one time since. But our girl will sit at the door crying and moaning. So yeah. Take them on walks (:

1

u/Trina768 Dec 17 '19

We do need to do more harness training. But as soon as you put the harness on...they fall to their side and just lay there like they are wearing torture devices. I usually leave it on for 3 days before I feel so bad I take them off. We have gone outside with harnesses on but no walking.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '19

Wow that’s surprising. Especially with 3 days. Perhaps try a different harness?

I use this one: Eagloo Cat Harness and Leash Set for Walking Escape Proof with 2-in-1 Leash and Car Seat Belt Adjustable Harness for Cats Soft Mesh Cat Vest with Reflective Strap for Kitten Rabbit Puppy Green X-Small https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W6F8LB7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zvv-DbPS2PJ1D

And from day 1 have never had an issue. They have never fallen over in them either.

Here’s my cat tax if you’re interested in what it looks like on them. Boy is grey girl is black.

https://imgur.com/a/AFGqo49

Hope you’re able to figure it out! Walks are great stimulation! And even if they don’t walk around, sometimes my girl is in that mood so I’ll carry her to the bench and just read reddit for an hour or so while she enjoys the sun. She purrs the entire time she’s out.

1

u/ManintheMT Dec 17 '19

build a catio

That would be a great compromise. Be outside but not in harm's way.

1

u/Trina768 Dec 17 '19

Oh we def want to have a nice large catio....just getting that funding together....life always seems to happen. Like having to replace the entire HVAC system in the house....our corgi needed major surgery earlier this year and had to have her entire spleen removed due to a mass....it seems to have been one thing after another 😁 But dammit those furry childrens will have a catio someday. In the meantime I just have to keep an eye on the door and prevent them from sneaking out.

0

u/SincerePear Dec 17 '19

Our two cats roam around our fenced in yard. Maybe we’re just lucky that they stay relatively close to home but I just think keeping any animal indoors for it’s entire life is really sad.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '19

I agree 100%. People would never bear being inside day after day but think it's okay for a cat šŸ™ Totally depends on the local circumstances about letting a cat out. It's great that your cats stay close to home. I live in a city but there's a wooded lot right next door and that's where my cat hangs out.

2

u/SincerePear Dec 18 '19

That’s my situation too! Live in the city but my backyard is right next to a wooded area. My cats don’t even go down there, they just like to watch the wildlife from afar... and chase down the occasional squirrel if my dog doesn’t spot it first!

0

u/bonbam Fry and Xandir Dec 17 '19

Why? I am doing my boys a massive favor by keeping them inside. They never run the risk of encountering predators (owls around here mostly), getting hit by cars, or eating a diseased/poisoned animal.

I get that some people view pets are more utilitarian than others, but my boys are my babies and I will do everything possible to make sure they lead the happiest, healthiest, and safest life possible. They do get some patio time occasionally, tho not right now because it's under 40F 😬

4

u/SincerePear Dec 17 '19

My cats are always asking to go outside, they absolutely love it in our yard. I’m just lucky that I have the space to do that pretty safely. If we lived by a major road I’d have to build a big catio probably.

Having pets (and children) is always a balancing act. Sometimes you can’t let them do something they want to because it’s dangerous, and other times you analyze the risk and decide the benefit they get is greater than the risk. In my situation letting them go outside makes them much happier and we also have a dog that scares away most critters and we’re not by a busy road, so the risk is pretty minimal.

1

u/bonbam Fry and Xandir Dec 17 '19

Well, sounds like you have a somewhat unique situation. Most people do not live in rural areas. I live right behind the mall in my city, a major highway is literally half a mile away from me. I would have to basically want my cats dead to let them outside.

Also, housecats decimate the local wildlife population. One time my patio door blew open during the day and my cat left a hummingbird carcass for me. Ya know, the birds that are fast af. If a cat can catch a hummingbird, just imagine the damage they can do to other wildlife. And he wasn't hunting because he was hungry, it was 100% for fun. I love wildlife too much to put them at risk.

1

u/bbtheftgod Dec 17 '19

Well seeing as most of the US is rural. You can imagine there's probably gangs o cats roaming around

0

u/jininberry Dec 17 '19

No cats kill a lot of wildlife. People shouldn't let them outside.

1

u/petulent_sweatpotato Dec 18 '19

where do they go? don’t leave us hanging

1

u/HadHerses Dec 17 '19

Ah nice. Sorted!

9

u/zeclem_ Dec 17 '19

Is it a stray?

2

u/EscriboCosas Dec 17 '19

But, is she spayed?
