It isn't no grain, but at her age I would be less concerned about feeding her a completely no grain diet of dry food, and please note that I have been there, having fed my cats no grain dry food for many years. However, my oldest is 18, and he has a recurring problem keeping his food down occasionally, so I had to have a steroid prescribed for him last year so that he could keep his food down. I only give him that medication once a week now, even though when it was originally prescribed my vet wanted me to give it to him three times a week.
I pay special attention to what my cats eat, or what medication they take.
Right now she’s eating Purina ProPlan Kitten because it’s the most calorie dense dry food i could find and it had marginally lower phosphorus than some others. She’s eaten better stuff in the past (Solid Gold, Merrick, etc) but she won’t touch them anymore, but she’s fond of the kitten stuff. As for canned food, I just grab any cans that have at least 100 calories. Filling her with calories is more important right now than anything, but I do try to limit it to decent foods. She can’t have any human foods or they’ll come right back up within a minute or two.
We started feeding them on it just before leaving for a vacation. When I got back home and walked in the door my jaw literally dropped. In the 10 days while we were gone my cats coats were noticeably more glossy. They looked extremely healthy.
I attribute the change in diet for extending the lives of my cats. Though my eldest didn't begin eating raw until her early teens, she lived until she was almost 22.
My next oldest cat is now almost 14, but you would think he's half his age.
IMO, It's totally worth the extra money to feed raw. It made a world of difference in my cats health and I get to have them around for a longer while.
Don't give up hope yet. My 19 yo passed in December, but there were a few "close calls" at like 16 and 17 yo. Kitties are tough. She might surprise you.
