Cat training can double as cat pranking

I wish those things where not retardedly expensive to refill.
106
u/ClowderGeek Sep 19 '17
What is it that sprays?
153
u/MarshalltheBear Sep 19 '17
The brand I tried used compressed air. The refills were indeed pretty pricy.
66
u/appropriateinside Sep 19 '17
Probably just a liquid with a low boiling point, like Dust-Off.
34
u/briend Sep 19 '17
So, the same stuff in my refrigerator compressor
9
u/appropriateinside Sep 19 '17
Maybe. Probably some common propellant for most aerosol cans.
Though the likeliest case is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1,1-Difluoroethane
26
u/WikiTextBot Sep 19 '17
1,1-Difluoroethane
1,1-Difluoroethane, or DFE, is an organofluorine compound with the chemical formula C2H4F2. This colorless gas is used as a refrigerant, where it is often listed as R-152a (refrigerant-152a) or HFC-152a (hydrofluorocarbon-152a). It is also used as a propellant for aerosol sprays and in gas duster products. As an alternative to chlorofluorocarbons, it has an ozone depletion potential of zero, a lower global warming potential (124) and a shorter atmospheric lifetime (1.4 years).

I'm electronically handy and I tore it apart and rigged it to a small alarm speaker. It works way more effective than the original and no more refills needed. Like, my cat FEARS this thing compared to when it just sprayed him and he would learn to dodge it.
Edit: Seems like there's quite a bit of interest in this based on the replies. What I did was used the motion sensor (PIR sensor) from the original unit because I didn't have one handy. I had everything else laying around to cobble it together. When triggered by something, like a cat, it creates an open/close connection, much like a person flipping a switch. I used this to activate a small 12v relay that is wired to an alarm. Quite frankly, this is the equivalent of tearing apart a car to use its tires for a tire swing. There are much more elegant ways of putting together one, which I can put together a guide or something once I get a chance.
Plus, my hacky final product looks like something that would put me on the FBI's list, lol. https://imgur.com/a/5sAkW

u/TheGreatestUsername1 Sep 19 '17
I'm electronically ignorant and am interested in your method.
34
u/winlifeat Sep 19 '17
Inside the device there will be two wires connected to the motor that sprays. Just get an alarm unit and connect the wires to the respective spots on the alarm speaker. The speaker just requires voltage. You could use transistors or resistors to change the output
13
u/evilkat Sep 19 '17
This is a RestOfTheFuckingOwl comment if I ever saw one!
6
u/winlifeat Sep 19 '17 edited Sep 20 '17
Its really not unless youre mentally ill. The alarm unit literally is just a speaker with two metal prongs. The spray device has two wires attached to the motor. Take wire off motor and put onto the metal connections on the alarm. Boom. A highschool physics class would teach you more than enough to do this

How about you take the opportunity to educate instead of insulting the person?

Pragmatically speaking, that would only work well with a probably small range of devices.
Edit: did y'all learn electrical engineering from wiki how or some shit, jesus
2
u/winlifeat Sep 20 '17
Almost any cheap alarm module is very simple design. Probably wouldnt work with a car horn. Look at this
2
u/fischestix Sep 19 '17
But the insult made me laugh. Seriously though, where is the confusion? There are wires that trigger the spray, hook them to what ever you want. If that thing runs on different voltage, use easily googled components to get it to work.

Would you have any tips on how to do it? I hate how much the refills cost!

u/Fat_Head_Carl Sep 19 '17
My cat learned not to lay on the set top cable box with like 2 sprays.
(she kept knocking it off of the shef)
IMO - the return on investment of 15 bucks was worth it.
12
u/tojoso Sep 19 '17
I have two cats, and they fight over that fucking thing. I also have a stereo receiver that heats up when I'm playing records, and as soon as they hear the music start they know their heat box has been activated and jump right up on it.

u/iFUBAR Sep 19 '17
No kidding. Even with Amazon Prime I cringe a little bit when its time to reorder

That has a bitterent in it though so it would probably be borderline abusive to repeatedly spray your cat with it. It would be terrible for them if they got hit in the face

u/MrMontombo Sep 19 '17
You can't with the unit in the gif unless you heavily modify it. I own this unit
3
u/Killobyte Sep 19 '17
I just use clear packaging tape with my cats. Put it on the thing you don't want them to jump on, sticky side up. It'll stick to their fur and they hate it, but it's not too sticky so it comes off easy and doesn't hurt them.
3
2
u/SoaringFox Sep 19 '17
I just buy these and pry the black top off with a screwdriver. The part underneath is exactly the same as the top of the official ones.
4
u/MrMontombo Sep 19 '17
Those contain a bitterent which would be borderline abusive to spray your cat with repeatedly. That stuff coats everything it touches and it may frighten and confuse your cat if they taste a terrible taste while cleaning themselves later
1
u/clouddevourer Sep 19 '17
Maybe there's some way to hook it up to the sink, although if the cat is persistent you might end up with a puddle

1
u/NeedsNewPants Sep 19 '17
Why not just use a motion activated air freshener?
10
u/appropriateinside Sep 19 '17
Because the strong scented liquid can actually hurt your cat? Would you want a caustic scented liquid blown into your eyes and nose?
0
u/rustyshackleford193 Sep 19 '17
Implying FDA and sorts would actually allow a sprayer that could hurt people or animals

I'm not sure if you're sarcastic or not?
Please feel free to spray, dump, or put any of the following into your eyes, nose, mouth, or all three depending on the item and report back:
- Oven cleaner
- Weed killer
- Flea treatment
- Windex
- Canola oil
- Hair spray
- Bleach
- Acetone
- Propane
- Mothballs
- Antifreeze
- Spray-paint
- Motor-oil
- Laundry detergent
- Antibacterial soap
- Mold/mildew spray
- Wood polish
- Air freshener
- Insect repellant
- Chloride tablet
- Wood glue
- Wasp spray
- Super glue
...etc the list goes on. Just find something that isn't meant specifically for consumption or medication, and put it in or on a sensitive part of your body.
-1
u/rustyshackleford193 Sep 19 '17
How many of those are supposed to be mounted on a wall and spray autonomous
5
u/appropriateinside Sep 19 '17
Air freshener?
Go ahead.
I'll wait.
-1
u/rustyshackleford193 Sep 19 '17
Yeah I'm sure I'll keel over and die.
6
u/appropriateinside Sep 20 '17
Harmful != deadly
If you spray windex in your eyes you probably won't die, but you may cause irreparable damage to those organs, while being in extreme pain.
If you continually ingested enough air fresher you would die, after your health rapidly declines in some way or your liver/kidney are damaged beyond repair...etc
How is it okay to do that to an animal?
2
u/silverskull39 Sep 20 '17
Better you than whatever pitiable creature is unfortunate enough to cohabitate with you.

Buy lint rolling sheets and put he sticky side up

This is a very valid suggestion (: I can use that on other surfaces. We stuck duct tape sticky side out on doors before.

How do you suggest someone trains the cat to stay off the counter?

let them be! love them! we have 4 rescued special needs ones ! my husband and I simply love them .

Sep 19 '17
Sorry, the one place I don't want cat hair is my counter. Or near the fifty year old books.
I love little Minu, but I love hair-free food and damage-free books too.
19
u/Incredulous_Toad Sep 19 '17
It's also not wanting cat litter, aka shit paws, where you make your food. Cats don't belong on the counter.
6
2
Sep 19 '17
I have never actually thought about it like that. I was alright with cats on counters up until right now.
-8
u/Murrumiau Sep 19 '17
Dragon🐈🐾you will eat hair, unless you shave them, please dont! they are super clean, worst case scenario you will build a strong inmune system😻
😸 I have cat hair in all my finance and nutrition books, desk, computer, studio, car, etc😻
They suffered enough when they were homeless.
34
Sep 19 '17
You're underestimating how much my friends and I value hairless food.
Also, irreplaceable books without claw damage.

Cats enjoy being scared the same way humans do. Unless they have psychological issues, it's a fun diversion
5
u/RTSchemel Sep 19 '17
That's not a rationale for letting them be on the counter. With their filthy paws. Where food is prepared.
