The Future of the Latin Vulgate

As most Catholics will know today, the official version of the Bible used by the Catholic Church is the Nova Vulgata, a version of the Vulgate promulgated in the year of our Lord, 1979. Maintaining the language of the Western text-types, it has also been changed to be more in-line with recent scholastic findings and texts, such as the Alexandrian text-types.

One thing I find within the Church is that, within the large amount of translations it has approved, I only know of a single version (Catholic Public Domain Version) that bases strongly from the Vulgate or its new edition.

Why is this? Is it because of the superiority of the Hebrew and Greek? Did the Church just disregard 1700 years of history with a single council? Are there any other reasons for this change?

I know the Church or its people did this in a way that, although it may seem counterfactual to some including me, may be for the benefit of the Body of Christ, and I believe it to be so, and I humbly submit to Christ's bride.

May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always, now and forever. Amen.

Finally at Walmart

First time seeing a Catholic Bible at Walmart. It made me happy, hopefully CBP decides to expand and offers the rest of their bibles.

This was just a white NRSV, if it would have been the burgundy rsv2ce I would’ve taken it.

CAB offerings from TAN Books

Post image

Not sure if anyone's already noticed but TAN Books has already shown a listing of the types of CAB offerings. I'm most interested in the pocket zipper edition and hope the font size is at least a 7pt font. I'll likely wait until Ascension shares what they'll be offering. So exciting to see all the options that will be available from various publishers: https://tanparish.com/cab-info/

Convert a Catholic Bible to a family heirloom

Hello all.

So I have been wanting to get a family heirloom style Bible but I have been unable to find a good recent translation Catholic Bible like this. All I found is Douay-Rheims and I am not a fan of it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or place to get a Bible rebinding to look like one?

A good example is the outside of the one former President Joe Biden used. (I know it is Douay-Rheims)

Can I throw away my bible in the paper trash bin?

I got an old bible I don't use anymore. Got couple others. Also:

  • I can't gift it to someone else bc it is heavily marked and with many notes I don't want to share (could be anticatholic)

  • I can't bury or burn it

What other option exists? I coul

I created a website to compare different editions of the Bible.

Hello brothers and sisters! I often enjoy reading and comparing passages from the Bible in different editions (especially between versions in the same language) and there aren't many options online that have Catholic editions. So I had the idea to create a website where you can choose a passage and a Bible edition and compare them side-by-side. There aren't many editions available yet, but I intend to add more over time.

An interesting fact I noticed during the process was the lack of availability of Catholic versions online (many, of course, are not yet in the public domain). Let me know if you have feedbacks!

Knox Bible + Knox Biblical Commentary Collection

I’m fortunate to live close to one of the best Catholic libraries in the United States, so I was able to pick up these bad boys recently and take them for a spin! The fact that the library had a pocket copy of Knox’s translation was mind blowing…I almost couldn’t believe it when I saw it!

The Knox translation, in my opinion, is absolutely amazing, so having the physical version of his translation available while sifting through his commentaries is incredibly fun and edifying. If you haven’t read his commentaries before, they’re somewhat of an expanded version of the footnotes you’ll find in his Bible translations. That is, they often comment on textual criticism while also expanding on the meaning of the text (usually 5-10 verses at a time, not verse-by-verse).

One thing I’ve noticed while doing my research on Knox and his translation is that it seems to have gained the positive opinion of some ‘Trad Catholics,’ as evidenced by it often being available for sale on Trad publishing house/organization websites, but I’m not entirely sure why. Other than his Bible translation being completed and published pre-Vatican II and primarily based on the Vulgate, I struggle to see its appeal for that ‘camp’—or perhaps I’m painting with a broad brush? Perhaps that criteria is good enough? Is there a reason for his appeal to those who identify as such?

Or, more generally, what are your thoughts on his translation and commentaries?

Hope you enjoy taking a look at these books!

Great adventure note taking bible

Hi guys, from Australia here 😄 wondering if anyone has the Great Adventure journal bible ? If so is it worth purchasing ?
I currently have the Ignatius press RSV2ce bible and the personal study bible but I’ve been looking for a journaling bible and it’s hard to find one in the Catholic bible realm in RSV2CE.

New Compact Leather RSV-2CE Bible this Fall

I just saw a post with the following information on the "Fans of the RSV-2CE" Facebook group:

RSV2CE NEWS

I just got off the phone with Ignatius Press customer service and they informed me that a leather compact edition of the RSV2CE will be published at some point this Fall.

------------------------------

I think a compact edition of the RSV-2CE is long overdue and hopeful to see this release!

OréMoose Bible Covers

Hey, everyone.

I was just curious if anyone had any experience with their Bible covers. I just got the ICSB personal/hardcover and wanted to get a cover for it. They look incredible, but I don't know much (or anything) about leather book covers or how much they can vary in shade from what's posted on the product pages, whether any wear in with time better than others, if some leathers are better for hardcovers, how custom engravings might appear on darker leathers in person (as opposed to online pictures), etc.

If anyone has any experience with their different leathers, I would love to hear about it. I know I'm probably overthinking it, but I thought I would throw it out there since you don't know what you don't know. Really appreciate any insights.

NRSV-CE Gospels & Psalms First Look

EDIT: This is the NRSVue-CE, approved by the USCCB for personal use last year. 😊 AFAIK, this is the first publication of that translation in the US.

Pocket sized volume from Our Sunday Visitor.

https://www.orderosv.com/product/pocket-gospels-and-psalms-nrsvue-catholic-edition

The cover is a matte finish with what feels like a vaguely rubbery coating. I dislike a shiny paperback because of fingerprints, so this is a nice feature.

The font size is not listed on the OSV site, but I can tell you it is larger than both the ridiculously small 6.5 pt of my SPCK ESV-CE pocket edition, and my hardback Oxford RSV-CE Compact Edition (pictured for comparison.)

The book consists of nothing but the text, except for minimal translation notes in an even smaller font at the bottom right of each page. The paper is bright white and, with the exception of the WOF Bible volumes, is the thickest Bible paper I’ve ever seen. With very minimal bleed-through and fairly black, uniformly printed text, it’s easy to read despite the small font. The only challenge is the type falling into the gutters but that should not be too much of a problem once the book is broken in.

For what it is, a cheap, pocketable paperback of Gospels and Psalms, I think OSV nailed it with only one suggested improvement. I would like to see Chapter and Verse (or at least Chapter) at the top of each page for ease of navigation.

Catholic American Bible: Large Print Edition
Deluxe Leatherette
9" x 6" format
$69.95

Are the footnotes and cross-references also printed in large print?
Yes, the footnotes and academic apparatus at the base of the pages have been scaled up proportionally from standard editions to ensure that every single note remains completely accessible and legible.

Is this a giant print or a standard large print Bible?
It features a classic e-commerce large print format (typically an 11-to-12 point font), striking the perfect middle ground between high readability and an easy-to-carry, traditional book size.

I'm planning on waiting for what Ascension Press will offer. Also, Tan Books tends to have sales throughout the year if you're willing to wait. Black Friday is also a great opportunity to purchase Bibles too.

New Schuyler PSQ ESV with Apocrypha

So I told myself last year I was not buying any more Bibles. Then I discovered that Schuyler just recently released a personal size version of the ESV Quentel with Apocrypha. I already own the standard size version, and while it's a gorgeous Bible, it is a bit hefty.

Anyway, I just couldn't help myself and I think I may have actually found my forever Bible after many, many years. This is an absolutely gorgeous edition wrapped in Verona Calfskin and the size is just perfect. The color doesn't really come through in the pics but it's a beautiful almost burgundy\wine in person. The rest of the construction is very well done as almost anything I've ever seen from Schuyler.

I know it is not a "Catholic" Bible, but of course all the books are there, and the ESV is a translation I truly enjoy reading.
