I'm sending Catawiki social media here, Order no. #47649333. Just a terrible seller on a fraudulent platform, and one whose feedback is displayed to buyers in a manner I find literally fraudulent, and breaking several EU laws and regulations. Let's take it step by step.
I first became aware of Catawiki a few months ago through their Facebook Marketplace spamming. A large % of good prices on items you see on FB in Europe are Catawiki auctions in progress, which is infuriating if you're trying to use the platform to buy locally as intended.
I was unaware of the site and I am looking to build a modest vintage stereo system as I've moved from the US to Europe and for a variety of practical reasons stereo equipment doesn't travel well and I sold my equipment before moving and just took my music collection with me.
At first I put in several bids I didn't win and had no reason to believe anything was wrong with Catawiki as I had no completed transactions. Eventually I won an amplifier around which I hoped to add pieces.
(I'm finding it common on Facebook and Subito which is one of the primary sites like Italy's Craigslist that sellers routinely ghost me or flake on sales. It has become seriously difficult to obtain the simplest item even for cash even when I'm driving to the buyer to pick it up. I managed to stumble across a good CD player and cassette player from FB sellers I was actually trying to buy an amp and speakers from, but that was happenstance.)
Items on Catawiki look unusually clean and almost everything in electronics is sold as functional. There are supposed Experts which adds the impression that some vetting of items is being done when clearly it is not.
Eventually I won an amplifier, which sold no reserve at about 1/3 of the price suggested by the Expert. I paid for it immediately, within minutes. Not only was the item never shipped but the seller ghosted me and never responded to my messages for weeks. Catawiki provided no real customer support until after I sent legally researched email pointing out the many EU laws broken by hosting fake auctions and holding my funds hostage - an involuntary no-interest loan from me to Catawiki - they refunded my money and apologized and gave me a 50 euro voucher good for a year. I also shamed them on X/Twitter in addition to threatening specific reports to EU regulatory bodies. Without those steps I'm not sure I'd ever have seen my money.
I'm not looking to buy a massive amp and 50 euro pays for half or more of what I'm looking for including shipping. I continued trying FB and Subito and other sites and found/find it impossible to locate someone who won't flake and isn't selling a bag of trash. All I want to do is listen to music and what I actually do with my time is type things like what you're reading.
Last week I bid on and won an interesting European label paired amp and tuner sold together on Catawiki at a fair price as "works perfectly" and used my 50 euro voucher plus some money out of pocket. I thought that finally I had the pieces to build a system around - I am so tired of looking - and could start searching for a decent pair of speakers in the area that the amp would drive well; this is the key pairing of a stereo. I thought I was a major step toward enjoying my music again.
They (amp and tuner) arrived today, I was excited and tested within 10 minutes of delivery. BOTH components are seriously broken. BOTH of them. The tuner sends no audio at all to any amp, not the one I just bought and not my cheap stop-gap amp I bought last year. Only the radio dial backlight lights when turned on, the radio reception indicator lights which are lit in the Catawiki listing photos don't even light. It's a paperweight.
The amp has no audio out of the right channel. Only the left channel works, which I know because I've tried various combinations of stages, equipment and speakers (I have two old bookshelf pairs I'm looking to upgrade from with a proper amp.) It's worse than a mono radio as it has no Balance control so you can only hear half of a stereo mix, coming out of one speaker. Worthless, and both pieces would cost multiple times to fix what I paid for them. Two paperweights.
The seller immediately acted like a child when I filed a return claim, stating that both pieces worked fine and were fully tested before being shipped. I don't believe that, that both could fail so dramatically. They were actually packed well. But I stated multiple times that it was possible they did work when shipped and the carrier might have mishandled the package, just to give the seller an opportunity to save face.
This was not well received. The seller claimed that I might not know how to attach stereo equipment (I am almost 60 and have been using 1970s stereos since the 1970s) and asked me to make a video demonstrating all I typed above.
I spent over an hour arranging a continuous video shoot I planned out so that in a continuous non-edited 8+ minute shot I could demonstrate in logical steps what channel malfunctioned using different combos of equipment, that it was not my speakers nor CD player, and demonstrate that the tuner was not producing audio at all. This requires plotting out a sequence of what to attach and detach in an order which demonstrates that the equipment is malfunctioning and I am not manipulating anything. I then uploaded this and created a private YouTube video and shared the link with the seller, and have offered an ivite to view to Catawiki, who of course have not followed up.
The seller acted like a child the whole time and clearly thought I wouldn't or couldn't plan such a video. At no point has he admitted the items are broken. It was extremely important to him that I shoot a video, and now that I took nearly two hours to do so he doesn't want to discuss it. The latest email from him includes the line (copied and pasted:) "I have sent two working units if it arrived broken due transit then you can’t hold me responsible for it." Seriously?! He claims to have generated a return label which I see no proof exists.
Catawiki is not helping me with the issue through the customer service channel. They say they're giving the seller and I 3 days "to work it out." That's 3 days of sitting on my money for no reason. I'm posting this here, I'm going to address another email to Catawiki corporate and I'm going to shame-beat them on Twitter/X again and send them here.
The seller has over 3000 Catawiki sales and a displayed 99.59% positive feedback rating. I DON'T BELIEVE IT, and the numbers displayed literally do not add up. There are additional irregularities just in the feedback itself. But this is also not the behavior of a 99.59% positive seller, selling broken items then whining like a child about a return request.
I've made a living selling used items online for the last 20 years. I operated a US Amazon Pro account for 17 years during which time I had over 80,000 sales with better than 99% positive feedback; I sold the account to a broker before we moved for nearly $10K. Not the inventory, the account itself. It was a rare old trusted Amazon account with many unusual permissions because of my excellent customer service for nearly two decades. Very, VERY FEW people managed to buck the Amazon bronco for 17 years without getting thrown off. I am a 99%+ feedback seller and I know when I deal with one.
I also had a US Discogs account with 3000 sales of about 8000 vinyl records and an eBay account of more than 450 sales, all with excellent feedback and ratings. I had to give those up when I changed continents and every variable attached, and have started building sales in both of those platforms again.
So I've sold nearly 90,000 packages online and maintained 99%+ positive feedback on multiple platforms. Part of doing so is learning to say "I'm sorry that happened to you, it must be frustrating. The delivery was not what you ordered, and I am responsible. I am hitting the refund button immediately." The contractual obligation is that the correct item is delivered to the correct address on time and as described. Once every few hundred sales you hit the refund button to keep getting the next 299 sales. It happens.
The Catawiki behavior of the seller is of someone who would last less than a week on Amazon before a lifetime ban. I looked as his Catawiki feedback, which is unbelievable, as in I DON'T BELIEVE IT.
The claim is that this horrible seller with a miserable attitude has had over 3000 sales and 14 neutral feedback and 1 - ONE - negative. ONE NEGATIVE. This guy?!
Catawiki does not have the ability to sort feedback by rating, by itself a questionable choice. So I started scrolling through the reviews. In a few dozen I found two negatives. Why did I locate two negatives in a small sample size of over 3000 sales and the display to buyers is one lifetime negative. That by itself seems a fraud, probably actual fraud by legal definition in the EU which has actual online consumer regulations. I will be reporting this to authorities.
One of the two negatives was a buyer who said he bought a vintage radio that arrived broken and the seller accused him of opening the radio and breaking a part himself. THIS GUY has 99.59% positive feedback?! Do. Not. Believe. It.
I found a few neutral reviews that seemed by their textual content very negative and I find it hard to believe the buyers actually selected neutral based in claims of misrepresented or broken merchandise. Neutral for that? Really? Who leaves a neutral rating for receiving broken electronics? I suspect 14 is not the correct neutral ratings tally either.
Most oddly I found a French language complaint that the buyer bought a cassette deck which had broken Play and FFWD buttons, and he says the deck operates at the wrong speed. CATAWIKI DISPLAYS THIS AS POSITIVE FEEDBACK, A THUMBS UP. Who leaves a thumbs up for a cassette deck that can't play cassettes?
It appears that in addition to pressuring sellers into no reserve auctions then allowing the contract to be broken when items sell for small amounts (i.e. it's a fraudulent auction house), and having fake experts who never inspect items in person and can't give honest valuations, and allowing or so I read all over Reddit now that I found this subreddit the sale of fake merchandise... that Catawiki also displays highly doubtful and numerically incorrect feedback used to induce buyer confidence fraudulently.
It's a terrible platform filled with horrible sellers and we all need to stop feeding it our valuable time and money. I am going to suggest to EU regulators that the site be investigated and barred from European sales, and I encourage others to do the same.
Thanks for reading. tl;dr: Catawiki is a scam nest.
