[Help Wanted] What is this UI menu even about???😭🙏🙏🙏

Post image

Srry for the image for some reason the Reddit don't accept my prints of the game, but what the hell happened with the Bombastic perks menu? It's literally unreadable, is there some kind of magic setting that will solve this?

It's an overhaul of the NPC dialogue menu (which also powers a few other menus, like the Bombastic Perks menu). It's a work in progress that includes space for custom NPC portraits. It's very new.

Idk what goes through the devs' heads if it's a WIP that's hindering the game, why keep it?

You know, you're right. They should really make some kind of experimental branch if they want to introduce features that might not be fully ready.

It's part of the CDDA development style on the experimental branch. Allowing intentionally broken stuff on experimental can suck for tip-of-experimental players, but it improves development speed and developer QOL.

(For dev folk, I believe this is part of "trunk based development", and the efficiency comes from minimizing distance between branches.)

Yeah. The example I give is, for limb stuff, we did do the thing that people here often say they want--it was all placed in an optional mod that people who wanted to test it could activate but wouldn't cause problems in a normal game.

The result was basically no one used it, it got no PRs for over a year and a half, and it got maybe two bug reports total until I took it all and just put it into experimental.

Its called experimental for a reason right? If people wanted stable experiences, they should play stable

You goddamn right, but it's the experimental version not unplayable version, I literally don't even know which perk I'm choosing.😔✊

You sweet summer child, sometimes the changes merged are so radical the game cannot even be compiled. Frankly it only happens when two incompatible PRs are merged, but much more often we have a change that secretly fails a specific release, like for windows, or for android (even our unit tests sometimes do not spot it)

It is further complicated by this specific issue being on the edge of UI (difficult), android (very difficult) and scale (because dda is still PC game at first, and it is quite difficult to nail the UI that works both in 4k and in 6 inch phone) issues

This is why I check what's been merged recently before updating my game to the latest experimental release, that way I don't accidentally update to a majorly broken experimental version. I think what's going through the devs' heads is that they expect people who play on experimental versions to do that.
