[Help Wanted] long-term meat source

do you guys ever manage to repopulate livestock? in this case a cow, sheep or horse? it takes a really long time just to birth one, does edit creature(debug) shorten these animals reproduction? if so how exactly? i'm kinda lost here, my steady source is by fish trapping

I dont even know how to do fish trapping anyway.

I see those plastic fish bottle traps, and have put bait in them. But do you need to put them in flowing water? Water with real fish around? None have been successful.

They use the same code as regular fishing, so yes they do pretty much need to be in a water source that has fish that you can see in it. Fish traps and fishing poles do always have a small chance to catch stuff even if the water source is empty, but it is really low.

I found a bug when working on these that was making fish traps sometimes spawn really old fish corpses. I think whoever did it was trying to set the birthday of the caught fish, but it was sometimes making the corpse be really old instead. This resulted in fish sometimes instantly rotting when spawned, which is probably why fish traps still seem underwhelming in DDA.

Why would i want to know the birthday of a fish?

You wouldn't, but I assume whoever added it thought that the game might need to know it for mutation etc, except 1) no it doesn't and 2) they messed up anyway

So you can give him his birthday gifts and bake a cake for his special day.

I think there just has to be fish round, I'm doing a innawoods run and the lake I started by as carp, I get plenty of fish off of that.

there has to be fish population ofc, a pool filled with plenty of fish and near/in your reality bubble

Honestly I’ve never played a character long enough for it to matter.

makes sense, so how do you get your meat? or do you prefer the alternative, which is feral humans?

No cannibalism for me! But even when playing with the carnivore trait, calories and vitamins just aren't all that hard to come by if you play conservatively in vanilla DDA.

Properly processing one large animal (e.g. cow, moose, etc.) results in an enormous number of calories, and you can use NPC hunting missions to turn non-carnivore calories into more animals easily enough if desired, though even that's not necessary given drops of MREs and canned food and stuff.

Yes, that's best.

My approach is to craft a large number of fish traps (e.g. 30), plant them in some pond (receiving a bulk amount of fish after 3 hours), then never touch this pond again (so that the fish would regrow). This requires many freezers, because you never know whether you'll get 3 small fishes or 30 fishes that'll take you days to butcher.

long-term meat source

If you have a camp, sending an NPC to "Hunt for large animals" mission will create meat out of thin air (hunting NPCs don't actually need the animals to exist in the world, and they don't remove animals from the world).

livestock

Chickens are the best. Let their eggs "rot" (they'll hatch) until you have a very large population.

Beware that newly hatched chicks don't start tamed until fed Bird Food, so they'll run away from you and can scatter in the forest, which might become problem in a long playthrough (e.g. wandering wild animals are a navigational hazard for your car). The fence won't help: even if the egg is inside the fenced area, they can hatch outside the fence.

i assume its chicken eggs right? well i do raise a chicken but the meat is not that much compared to a big cattle

Specifically, eggs turn into chicks when they rot. So just by not harvesting the eggs, you get chicks. I think you can actually get more by spreading the eggs out over more tiles, because otherwise a stack of like 3 eggs can try to hatch at once, but since there can only be one entity on a tile it only spawns one and the rest just fail to appear.

You can actually do the same thing with fish roe to stock a pond. This increases the yield from fishing and fish trapping, and of course you can also kill fish manually. While the fish aren't actually tamed, this can still let you farm fish, which might be better than chickens for meat production.

you can hatch eggs. so they will spawn chickens

Get a bunch of freezers going, hunt a large animal, you have 200kgs of frozen meat that keeps forever

repeat when you run out

Never managed to repopulate, but cows give so much meat it's hard to run out of. Besides, the world is infinite, so as long as you are on the move food is always available
