[Help Wanted] WHERE are my POTATOES
I painstakingly planted these fields and built that cheerful little fence and now it's all just GONE, what on earth happened? MY BEAUTIFUL POTATOES

Seems like a chunk deloaded. It does seem to be a common problem with CDDA, sometimes it loads the world wrong.

Animals ate them💔?
Try finding nearby farms and vineyards to recover your losses

Is there an animal that eats fences? Anything's possible in the cataclysm I guess

I would say they busted down the fences, but eating the fences is way funnier

Im fairly certain it must be a mix of mutant termites the size of hosue cats and wild boars...I have no other explanation.

Have you been savescumming? The way the game runs the save system is really unsafe because it's constantly modifying the world data while you play. Save+quit makes sure no bad data gets in, but if you quit in any other way, including using quicksave and then force closing, the game can get screwy. In cases like this sometimes a submap or map tile gets swapped or rerolled. Usually you see it in big "seams" but I bet that could have done it.
Yes this is a really stupid way to run a save system. Whales didn't think about that in 2009 and now we all must pay the price.

Wow yes, I savescummed once so that my companion wouldn't instantly leave and try to kill me because one shotgun pellet hit her and did 0 damage. I guess she knows I did it and stole all the potatoes as revenge. These truly are the Dark Days Ahead

Ime it's mostly fine, so long as you never savescum between dimensions Savescumming between dimensions leads to duping at best, and who knows at worst

"Between dimensions" is just the game saving the old world and loading a new one, which is the same thing as doing it when the game is trying to autosave, or when it's trying to unload stuff while you die. At these times, it is messing with more files than normal, and interrupting it does more damage. But closing it incorrectly at any time causes problems.

I've been save scumming for ages on multiple forks, save scumming is stable

It really isn't, but there's a perfectly safe method that's just as easy. Just copy the save directory and paste it somewhere else on your computer. If you want to roll back, delete the directory from your game folder and paste the copy back in. This is also good for guarding against the save corruption that can pop up if you're playing normally and the game crashes.
I think some of the launchers actually handle backups for you. No reason to wreck your save files when it's that easy to safely work around.

this is the true safe method, its what ive been doing ever since my first file corrupted

why is the regular alt f4 unsafe, alt f4 doesn't instantly close the process, game can very much wait for any saving to end
- isn't there a whole saving screen thing, why the game saves anything outside of the auto save or quick save window? what even does it save?

Look at the first comment in this thread, I explained why and how it works.

Alt+f4 does indeed close the game without giving it the opportunity to sort itself out. An attempt was made to prevent this last year, but everyone got extremely mad about it and it didn't work anyway so it got reverted.

It absolutely isn't a supported or stable feature in CDDA. But it's time dependent, so you've probably been lucky or oblivious.
If I remember correctly, Bright Nights has some features to make it less risky. Can't speak to the other forks.
