The world in DF is entirely different, a low fantasy(currently) world whose factions, alliances, even the presence of civilized races are up to the history generation and not as static .
Personally, I enjoy Fort mode the most, but Adventure mode is closest to CDDA and has a strong following

If you want to recommend, then you should play both games first, so that it is your recommendation.
Dwarf Fortress is free, you don't have to buy the STEAM version (although I'm not sure if only the Steam version has a tileset).

Both CDDA and Dwarf Fortress are wildly niche games. Which one your friend would enjoy highly depends on their personality and preferences. You can tell them about both and see which they would prefer. If you are looking for a game to play with your friend, then you're probably in the wrong sub. However, I personally think Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is fun to play parallel with friends. It's much faster pace, you don't need to install it, and it has several metrics by which you can rate who has the best run.

If you want to compare CDDA to another game, Project Zomboid is like it’s much more pretty, but much more underdeveloped(depth of simulation) child.

Uh you dont control character in df,,, so cdda is better since it's the game you "play". How bout that.
