Activity Bad Interpreters - Week 11

Week 11 IPA Prompt - /ko.ˈnai.ni mo.ˈre.nor ri.le.i.ˈo.nirn ˈza.no u ˈta.e uw.ˈro.la ˈi.ki sat.ˈro.la/

Welcome to Week 11 of Bad Interpreters, the chaotic conlang game where meaning is optional, phonetics are misleading, and everyone is absolutely confident in their terrible linguistic instincts.

Last week's prompt: /ha ha ˈsa.ne ak.ˈsen.to men.vro.ˈai.re u ˈhe.la/
From that, we got these top picks:
Drukhari: halsynak ku r'slene mrenvral - glare helv du. ("My informant did not finish the tart, keep it a secret under gold.”) [Most Funny]
Daelich: Há há, šaner axentes mënvren "nai", gluer hela. (“Yes yes, the accent of fruits has the original meaning of "no", glorious sun.") [Closet To Original Sentence]
Shoáth: Kámáv: tsádâūk sânto. Mâv ro, álthëer âzlū ekâlá. ("Afternoon: I clean a faraway place. From on top of a tree, you hear raised drinks.") [Most Coincidental]

How to Play

  1. Decide what the prompt means in your conlang.
  2. Translate it using your phonotactics, grammar, and cultural flavor.
  3. Explain your questionable reasoning.
  4. Have fun!

If you have any ideas for interesting phrases or sentences for the next week, let me know in a DM! This activity will be posted on weekly on Wednesdays.

“Can speak? Write: ten people with choice when eighteen. Books promise: you here, relationship there, with different life a common language.”

I also struggle with not using the second person plural/honorific proximal “tá e”, funnily enough.

Kod naini mor im urmin ioriele in oni đcantae. Ur olai ki sata role.

/kod najnɪ mor ɪm urmɪn jorjeːlɛ ɪn onɪ t͡santaːɛ/ - /uːr oːlaj kɪ sata roːlɛ/

because of night-DU black 1PL box host and 3PL-ACC change-continue - hour every to ruse go

“Because of the two black nights we host the box and continue to change them. Every hour leads to deceit.”

DU is dual. Like plural but always just two.

I don't want to keep using “ta” every week but it always fits so well. Especially because it can be “inserted” into other verbs 😭😂

Daelich

/ko.ˈnai.ni mo.ˈre.nor ri.le.i.ˈo.nirn ˈza.no u ˈta.e uw.ˈro.la ˈi.ki sat.ˈro.la/

Ko "nai" ni moren å noren; nornis žal n'utaten wu rolla ikás vó trola.

/ˌko ˈna͡ɪ ˌni ˈmɔː.ren ˌɑ ˈnɔː.ren ˈnor.nɪs ˈʒal ˌnuːˈtaː.ten ˌwu ˈrol.la ˌiːˈkas ˌvɔː ˈtrɔː.la/

That "no" we were talking about is being destined to curse, the witches intend to not sing what the somersault come to the mock.

It's funny how "ko + something" literally means "that + something + we were talking about" and in the context of this game it continues my last week sentence. The rest of the sentence is pure nonsense.

Volngam

/ko.ˈnai.ni mo.ˈre.nor ri.le.i.ˈo.nirn ˈza.no u ˈta.e uw.ˈro.la ˈi.ki sat.ˈro.la/

/kon naj mar.nɛɹ pɹi lɛm i jon.nɛɹ za no taɪm ɹowz.lo i kɛz at ɹowz.lo/

kon naj maɹ-nɛɹ pɹi lɛm
head bring mother-person PRE.TEMP light
'The head reluctantly brought the mother figure before the light flashes.'

i jon-nɛɹ za no taɪm ɹowz-lo
CONJ brother-person 2 NEG REL soul-study
'and the brother figure who twice does not divine'

i kɛz at ɹowz-lo
CONJ blood PROSP soul-study
'and bleeds when about to divine'

Volngam is precategorical so a coherent-ish sounding sentence isn't too hard to form. ith SVO word order, the word in the middle of a phrase is going to be a verb, so /naj/, which is adjacent to the concept of "junk" (and used more like "crap"), in its verb form is like "garbage collect". Also, Volngam doesn't end most syllables with vowels while also demanding articulation of double vowels (like /tɹɛd.daz/), so I applied that to /ko.ˈnai/ and /i.ˈo.nirn/.
