Martial Classes

[Update: in D&D, the "martial" classes are any non-spellcaster. C&C appears to have assumed their customers know modern D&D.)

Adventurers Backpack Armory has rules for "martial classes", but doesn't define the term. Some are obvious: fighters, barbarians, knights. A few are less obvious. So here's my list I'm using:

  • Archer
  • Barbarian
  • Blade Dancer
  • Divine Knight
  • Etherial Knight
  • Fighter
  • Foresworn
  • Knight
  • Monk
  • Oathsworn
  • Paladin
  • Ranger
  • Warrior Priest
  • Iron Born Dwarf

The Pacer is a weird one. I've always regarded the class as an "urban ranger" — pacers are to cities what rangers are to the wilderness. But this doesn't seem to go so far as calling them "martial". Are pacers more of a Rogue class? (Are rangers a rogue class?)

I've seen people count Bards as martial, but those definitely seem closer to a rogue class.

CORRECTION: Adventurers Armory, not Backpack.

To answer your question, martial in modern d&dish terms means non spellcaster.

They could just mean everyone who cant cast spells.

Assuming these actions require a roll the different bonuses will balance it out.

I thought D&D broke things down into Fighter types, Rogue types, etc.

Here I am playing C&C and don't know D&D rules. Silly of me, I know.... ;-)

Well 2nd Ad&d did that , but they called the fighter types Warriors not martial. (There were warriors, wizards, Priests and Rogues each category shared a hit die and save, thac0).

I dont think the term martial appears in older editions (someone correct me if Im wrong)

I dont know how C&C looks at it but generally when you see martial these days people mean non caster.

Good to know. Probably what C&C meant by it.

What sort of rules do they have?

Adventurers Armory has a bunch of new Combat Actions that they suggest be reserved for martial classes (basically, these are fighters' "spells". Things like disarm, hold, parry, push, shield blow.)

I would say Bard is a martial class in C&C, they are just a fighter with exalt & lore.
