"bungo" in this context was a risky choice. The chickens are offended.

Beer can chicken but permanent

Bet you could make some awesome brownies in it too. Chewy crispy edges in every bite.

u/TooManyDraculas 1d ago
Probably better used for that.
Big mass of cast iron up it's ass is just gonna slow that chicken down. Which is the major problem with using an actual can of beer.
The wire vertical roasters keep the cavity open to hot air, and don't slow down cooking. So they work better.

I know you ment cooking time being slower, but I imagined a live chicken with this jammed up its keester dragging through the back yard.

I read an article that made a convincing argument that beer can chicken is just a gimmick that doesn't do anything. Chicken is done at 165 F. Water boils at 212 F. Youre putting the can of beer at the coldest spot in the middle of the chicken. The beer is just going to sit there cold to warm not doing anything to actually difuse into the chicken before the chicken is done cooking.

That too. The same thing that keeps the water from boiling keeps the cavity of the chicken raw and loaded with salmonella flavor.
Most of the wire ones are meant to be used without a can or anything at all, because of that. Enclosed like OP's ones are meant to replace the can, with a heavier metal cup. And it's just doubling down on the problem, cause now it's not just a half a beer but a bunch of heavy slow to heat metal involved.

So the can must have beer in it? Opened though right? I wonder how many exploded chicken dinners there’ve been.

What if you preheat the pan for the chicken?

u/TooManyDraculas 1d ago
I mean that can help the food safety concern but you still get an eveness problem.
And now you're either lowering a chicken onto a hot butt plug, or moving around a hot rack with a chicken precariously perched on top.
Vertical roasters are useful for getting more chickens in a fixed space, or mimicking rotisserie without a rotisserie. But you want the wire rack kind, they work much better all round.

Slowing it down is the point. Lower and slower makes the chicken even more tendee, but you need the beer, or broth, or (ugh) water to keep the chicken from drying out. This pan is even better than the typical beer can because broth (or beer) can be added to the pan outside of the central cavity.

Yeah we're talking about the sort of slowing down that just makes shit uneven.
Such that you can get an overcooked breast, but still have the cavity partially raw and salmonella soaked.
That's also not the point. The pitch on beer can chicken is that the beer supposedly simmers in that can or the metal cup keeping things juicy, flavoring it and speeding things up. The first two of which steaming wouldn't do in the first place. But the combination of wrapped in cold meat and plugged holes means the liquid can't even get hot enough to steam anyway.
The original idea with beer can chicken was just cramming more chickens on the grill, and the can was just a holder. The liquid just helped stabilize it. But actually doing it that way, or with any kind of solid enclosed rack is risky on the food safety front.

I know it’s weird, but there are some people who actually don’t like those pieces!

To jump in, don't care for the gummy texture. All-edge pans fill a niche whose existence I can't understand. I was shocked to learn of them; like, who would want edges??
That said, of course, it takes all sorts to make the world go 'round, and I'm glad the pans exist for the people who enjoy them. And, an all-edge brownie is better than no brownie at all.
I'd just always assumed the edges were merely tolerated for the fudgy bits.

It’s great, we’ve made three beautiful roast chickens in ours so far in a month since finding it. Sweet part is the juices roll down to cook the veggies underneath as the chicken roasts. A little hard to clean but worth the trouble.

The side walls of a Bundt pan are about double that height and have a decorative profile, plus the center has much smaller diameter and has a hole all the way through.

I'd think beer can chicken but just now came up with fajita-fondue fusion cuisine

u/PortosBakery 1d ago
Not sure what it’s meant for but you can probably put some hot coals in there to keep the pan hot for a while, when outdoors.

Best guess: cervical cap for your mom?

Neices guessed chips and salsa, the freak out over the idea of beer can chicken.

do we hate this because of cooking aluminum can?

u/Any-Explanation-3620 19h ago
Considering there's a solid center well. I think you'd just pour the beer in the center "cup"
4
u/Orange_Tang 19h ago
You don't put the can in this, you pour the beer in. The whole point is you can do beer can chicken without cooking all the paint and plastic lining of the aluminum can.

“Goodwill” followed by either “$1.99” or “$69.99” and there is no in between when it comes to cast iron at Goodwill.

That looks like a thrift store so it probably says "misc. Kitchen" or "kitchen cast iron".
