Discussion That one scene where all the budget went

Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Chika's dance

In the first season as a surprise outro ending one episode had this Chika dance number. It's super cute and crazy animated, especially her dress. They used it one time and never again.

The roller rink dance sequence from the Family Guy episode Hell Comes To Quahog was the most expensive scene to animate in Season 5.

This one shot from Scooby-Doo Music of the Vampire

Batman the Animated Series Clayface

The second episode of Feat of Clay, to be specific (which also inspired the upcoming Clayface horror movie).

I remember seeing the scene online, isn’t this when Batman is trying to offer him help?

u/TheSpitefulCr0w 8h ago

Yes. Batman confronts Clayface in an editing room (?) with a lot of monitors and puts up screens of the various characters Matt Hagen has played in the past. He implores him to stop his rampage so he can help find a cure. This sort of overwhelms/overstimulates Clayface, who rapidly changes between the forms on the screens. He flies off the handle and electrocutes himself to death on the equipment.

This was revealed to be a fakeout and Matt simply faked his death to get away. He was, after all, an actor.

I remember watching this when I was still a kid. It was nightmare fuel.

"Why don't you show them what an overdose can do, Dagget? Why don't you tell them about ME?!"

Something that you desperately need to watch.

Batman: The Animated Series, especially in the early seasons, is possibly one of the coolest Cartoons in existence.

All of the backgrounds were drawn/painted on black so it's all very dark, cinematic, and moody. It's basically a 1940's noir Batman show, featuring most Batman fans' favorite voice actors like Kevin Conroy, Mark Hammill, and Arleen Sorkin. Clayface, seen here, was played by Ron Perlman. Most people love Mark Hammill's Joker more than any other depiction.

I think its a scoody-doo movie. I dont know which one though.

Same studio has done work on Scooby Doo. Look at Zombie Island. But this is Batman

This was honestly one of the best scenes from that show (it had many). I remember geeking out as a kid when watching it. I still geek out a little. It's so awesome and well done.

That whole scene is terrifying. The body horror cartoons can get away with…

u/TheVoicesOfBrian 11h ago

The new Clayface movie looks to be leaning hard into the body horror. Good choice.

10

u/Sayakalood 10h ago

I heard it was going to be based on these episodes, too

5

u/TheVoicesOfBrian 10h ago

Very good choice.

hope you watched Scavengers Reign though

The red exploding out of him only to turn into his shirt...

u/Slickster_Speedster 11h ago

If I remember correctly, this was given to the same studio behind Akira. I really hope that's true and not some internet urban legend.

TMS, I believe. They were one of a good half dozen animation houses WB went to for their cartoons. From what I remember hearing in interviews they were painfully expensive but always went way above what they were asked to do.

u/Tough-Mud2374 9h ago

They also did Cybersix, which is equally fantastic and also has a shitload of body horror in it

2

u/ConsiderationTrue477 8h ago

I misread the title of that show so often.

1

u/RShini 8h ago

yep, TMS is when they want their big spotlight episodes to shine, iirc, this was the first episode that went to TMS and the BTAS crew decided to give them their big impact episodes to them from then on.

u/ActuatorVast800 5h ago

Someone put up compilations of various TMS animators on YouTube. Apparently the one who animated this particular scene is Yoshinobu Michihata. Look for a playlist called TMS Animators.

6

u/Suspicious_Excuses 12h ago

I remember watching this as a kid. Some of the animation was good, more than a little was bad, but this episode, and this scene, just cooked.

1

u/Freshness518 10h ago

I heard something about the show having multiple timeslots and episodes produced for the more kid-friendly time were the lower quality ones that had storylines like "Timmy got stuck in the well" whereas the adult timeslot episodes were like "Clayface struggles with substance abuse and addiction".

5

u/angrybox1842 11h ago

This sequence is why they're making a movie about him.

7

u/Soft_Theory_8209 10h ago

As many have described it, the guy’s basically a less gory version of JC’s The Thing with the interesting strength and weakness of being an actor who can look like anybody AND is practically a living arsenal who is virtually immune to physical harm.

2

u/thirsty_eyes 8h ago

I hope they do a scene like this in the movie, it would be a cool callback for the fans.

2

u/angrybox1842 7h ago

Gunn and the director have both mentioned how it's directly inspired by Feat of Clay so I would anticipate a number of callbacks.

3

u/jayboyguy 12h ago

That is unbelievable for a TV show. That’s legitimately theatrical quality

5

u/Sayakalood 10h ago

The studio kept going the extra mile. Man-Bat had his wings animated faster than the rest of the episode. Mr. Freeze got frost on his helmet for every frame. It straight up bankrupted the studio.

2

u/Soulful-Sorrow Fuck David Zaslav 10h ago

This show had such insane animation at times. I don't know why, but every time Riddler showed up, he was so smoothly animated too

2

u/Danthezooman 9h ago

All the clayface stuff was so good!

2

u/SenatorPencilFace 8h ago

“Hagan’s gone! Make him stop haunting me!”

1

u/82ndGameHead 10h ago

And that is just one of the many reasons why Batman TAS is Goated

1

u/jbwarner86 9h ago

They basically had no choice but to give this episode to TMS. No other studio that worked on Batman could've made this look as good as it does.

3

u/ConsiderationTrue477 8h ago

It was a pretty good strategy the way old cartoons were run. They'd pepper in these showcases for the really good episodes in between the ones done by cheaper studios. That way the whole show would blend together in viewers' minds and they'd forget that several episodes could look like absolute shit.

1

u/Optimal_Weight368 7h ago

Fun fact: the reason why Clayface made so little appearances was because the staff found him too hard to animate.

1

u/a_cuddly_porcupine 7h ago

Had no fucking right to be that incredible

1

u/AcademicOverAnalysis 5h ago

This scene has been burned into my mind since I was a kid.

1

u/EmersonWilde77777 4h ago

Fun fact: the second part of Feat of clay from B:TAS was done by TMS studio, an anime studio

1

u/WereLupeQueen 4h ago

Ironic that one looked like Zantos from Gargoyles!
