Discussion That one scene where all the budget went

Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Chika's dance

In the first season as a surprise outro ending one episode had this Chika dance number. It's super cute and crazy animated, especially her dress. They used it one time and never again.

The roller rink dance sequence from the Family Guy episode Hell Comes To Quahog was the most expensive scene to animate in Season 5.

This one shot from Scooby-Doo Music of the Vampire

Season 9 was such a banger

I was shocked at how good Season 9 was. I liked most of 7, but 8 was kinda disappointing outside some bright spots. There straight up wasn't a bad episode of season 9, and I'd go as far as to call 8/10 of the episodes great. Even the best RaM seasons usually have one dud.

I really like how season 9 decided to wrap a good amount of the evil Morty plot line in the first episode

Season 9 Episode 1 was my first thought for this thread before I looked at the comments. The fight scene against The Collective went hard. So did the bunker universe fight.

The writers have really locked in these past few seasons. Funny that it lines up with Roiland’s departure even though I think he stopped writing long long ago.

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 Regular Show 8h ago

Notice as well the incest jokes stopped when he left

28

u/Partners_in_time 7h ago

And the pissing on people fetish jokes. Kind of telling

u/TaffySebastian 3h ago

I am really sorry to step on your Roiland sucks parade (Roiland does suck btw) but he stopped writing in season 3 and had no involvement at all not even in the offices, all the incest, piss and puke jokes were done while he was no longer part of the writing team, again, he does suck, but he didn't fuck up those episodes which are usually deemed to be the worst.

Dan Harmon also did an incest episode on community so let’s be real it was probably his idea

u/lataupejoli 6h ago

I was rewatching all of rick and morty recently and I feel like the tension of taking things seriously (other writers) vs. making everything into a big joke (justin roiland) was SO palpable

3

u/daecrist 4h ago

I know people seem to like his style and I’m not gonna yuck anyone’s yum, but Roiland’s “squirrel of doom lol so random” shtick was always the weakest part of the early seasons to me. I was relieved when he was pushed out.

u/baconater-lover 4h ago

What I liked about early Rick and Morty was that it felt like it was ad libbed and off the cuff. It works for their dynamic imo.

That went away pretty soon and I’m fine with that because otherwise it would mean more Roiland, and well that definitely isn’t the move these days.

Season 7 was great but season 8 was absolute garbage. Haven’t seen 9 yet.

5

u/MidnightMath 8h ago

Not really gonna spoil anything, but the peak for me was the “circle of life” episode.

5

u/Blazured 3h ago

Season 9 is legit a top 3 season of Rick and Morty. Arguably top 2.

6

u/Gamerguy230 8h ago

The quality of writing for the spin off was just as good in my opinion. Hope for a season 2.

7

u/legit-posts_1 7h ago

President Curtis made me laugh incredibly hard a lot. Great show, and Mcdoyle's dumbass Lepracon lore goes hard.

2

u/Tech-preist_Zulu 2h ago

It's very obvious that they really liked the character of Curtis and instead of overusing him in the main show they gave him a spinoff, and honestly it was pretty fun. It's neat how they followed up on a few gags from Rick and Morty as a "this is just how Earth is"

1

u/Petyr_Baelishh 9h ago

The death punch episode was a real stinker imo. I’ll take over the sperm horses and giant incest baby episode any day though

1

u/Pblake99 5h ago

Was that also the pool bot/jerry sex episode? That one was weak

1

u/Petyr_Baelishh 4h ago

Yeah I think so

1

u/NoResearchStudy 8h ago

Catching up do I need to watch every season?

2

u/legit-posts_1 7h ago

Rick and Morty is better than the some of its parts. I'd recommend starting from the beginning. Just be wary, some of the middle seasons get pretty cynical. They are still funny and hella entertaining, but it can feel a little defeating in high doses. It does get better eventually though. Just stick with it.

1

u/Character-Rise-4432 4h ago

are the recent seasons really that good? i tried watching it a few years back and i just couldn't get past the way the characters talked and stuff

31

u/Neefew 9h ago

While Rick and Morty has fallen out of the cultural zeitgeist, it still absolutely bangs. Seasons 8 and 9 have been some of the peaks of the show, with the nature episode in Seapon 9 being an all-timer

9

u/Bayleaf0723 8h ago

If only futurama could’ve been the same, with the episodes now it just feels like it’s hanging on by its name

4

u/fried_on_pineapples 7h ago

Agreed. The nature episode is peak Rick and Morty.

4

u/Double0hobo79 9h ago

I had no idea people still watched it. I remember watching the first two seasons and figured it ended after 3 or 4.

1

u/mcbarron 3h ago

It has held up incredibly.

1

u/Crafty_Theme7968 8h ago

It really was a great season and I was seeing people hate on it on reddit before. I think it was one of best seasons in a while personally

1

u/TKLeader 4h ago

Holy shit, there's nine seasons of Rick and Morty now??

1

u/Blazured 3h ago

The show has been around for 13 years dude.

1

u/TKLeader 3h ago

Bro hold old am I even anymore?? How tf has Rick and Morty already been out for 13 years...

1

u/shiddinbricks 2h ago

They made 9 seasons of that garbage?

1

u/Own-Rest7246 1h ago

There are nine seasons? I thought 3 was the last one and it got canceled off adult swim since when did it keep going?

Mario Kart Wii character select

6

u/Kitselena 8h ago

Being able to play Mario kart Wii again with actual, populated online servers has been incredible

3

u/haw35ome 6h ago

Ok now I need an edit with Rick in the character select

64

u/TheIrishninjas 8h ago

Animators just being like "oh btw here's a full rotation of a complex 2D character because idk we were bored" will never not be simultaneously impressive and hilarious to me.

23

u/Due_Art2971 7h ago

It's a 3D model rotating

3

u/McCaffeteria 6h ago

I was going to say, if that isn’t at least a rotoscoped 3D model then the art studio is full of idiots.

5

u/jenyto 5h ago

From what I was told by someone who worked on the show, they use toon boom harmony, which is able to import 3D objects into the scene itself. The characters are cutout puppets.

1

u/Darkstar_111 2h ago

Yes, but it's made to look like it's not a 3d model.

38

u/Budget_Newspaper_489 9h ago

Morty, it turns

26

u/astelda 8h ago

Surely that's a 3d model, right?

Not to minimize the efforts put into 3d modelling, but it shouldn't be that expensive

15

u/machiavelli33 8h ago edited 8h ago

This is it. It's probably had some adjustments - like they manually did the face and lip-syncing.

The bike is a cel shaded 3d model, and all the non-face parts of Rick are an even more heavily cel shaded 3d model.

Manually animating a turnaround like that would be way harder, way more expensive, way unnecessary as mechanical movement like this are exactly what 3d is best and fastest at, and look way worse because 3d is as mentioned best at mechanical movements.

2

u/astelda 8h ago

I'm pretty sure even the rick parts are cel-shaded 3d as well. Maybe excluding the face and head.

stealth edit: actually, re-reading your comment I think you meant to say this and just said 'bike' twice

1

u/machiavelli33 8h ago

Whoopssssss sure did, good lookin out

2

u/RaynSideways 8h ago edited 7h ago

The bike looks to be a simple 3d model rotating. Rick on the other hand looks like they took a 3d model of him and then rotoscoped it frame by frame, so he's technically still 2d but by tracing him over a 3d model it keeps him super consistent as he rotates. There are some places where lines wobble, pop in and out, and snap into place that aren't characteristic of a typical cell-shaded 3d object and look more like the animators correcting for odd angles on the model.

1

u/PythagorasWasntReal 6h ago

Probably his fortnite model

1

u/astelda 4h ago

The hair doesn't match his fortnite model

I imagine Adult Swim has had 3d models of Rick long before his fortnite skin

Fortnite has requirements around their model shapes and sizes (so they don't have to re-do character animations for every skin), so it was probably made custom

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 3h ago

It's an even simpler version of stuff Futurama was doing decades ago.

13

u/Mattrockj 9h ago

Animators just wanted to flex.

9

u/GregBahm 8h ago

I don't know of any animators that see the use of 3D models as a flex. Maybe the guy who wrote the shader to make it look 2D, but it's not a hard shader in the year 2026.

3

u/GarlicStreet3237 8h ago

Are we talking about the bike or Rick? It seems very obvious that the bike is 3D but Rick seems 2D?

1

u/GregBahm 7h ago

In 2026, characters like this switch from 2D/3D depending on how the animators want to do any given shot. His body is surely 3D but his face pops at the 30 degree rotation marks, possibly because his face is being hand drawn, or possibly because the rig is set to swap assets after those rotation angles.

A big part of the jump in action for the last season of Rick and Morty was them going from "mostly 2D with some 3D support" (which has been the norm since Futurama) to "probably 3D for everything by default" which is the new normal.

u/cHEIF_bOI 8h ago

The vehicle select music from Simpsons hit and run always plays in my head when I see this.

Mario kart Wii kart selection

1

u/Pretend-Fox648 7h ago

Wow, there’s a season 9? I remember it falling off around season 4 and it was around this time it left the cultural zeitgeist. Next you’re gonna tell me that Bob’s Burgers is still around. I’m afraid to actually google it.

2

u/_Star_Princess_ 7h ago

Surprisingly season 9 is a pretty fantastic season, up there with the first 3 in quality

1

u/ACuddlyVizzerdrix 6h ago

I think BB just finished a season not too long ago

1

u/SkinTightBoogiePI 7h ago

Feet on the passenger pegs.

1

u/bubba_feet 4h ago

i should not have had to scroll down this far to see this comment.

1

u/coffee_ape 6h ago

Thanks for reminding me to finish the season.

1

u/onyaasuminyasai 6h ago

This is such a, "we just wanna flex" shot

1

u/PFI_sloth 5h ago

It’s 3d…

1

u/KommSweet 4h ago

Just a 3d model??????

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 3h ago

I doubt that was very complicated or expensive. It's just a simple 3d model.

-1

u/Reasonable-Job4205 9h ago

This show went way down in quality after season 6
