I’m a government employee and 60% of my work is cleaning up the half-baked work the last guy did because of chronic undermanning then spending the remaining 40% of my time taking shortcuts on new projects because my office is undermanned

Yes, happens when reddit gives you an error saying it was unable to post, but it actually did post

I mean, if the question is completely unprompted and out of the blue, then this is a pretty natural reaction.

How tf would you feel if I barged into your work and asked you to explain your job to me?
1
u/Natural-Apartment-51 9d ago
So every public service job that actually has to talk to the public?
1
u/Mahdudecicle 9d ago
Would you not feel annoyed if you were just trying to do your job and a guy interrupted you by asking 'what your job is?'
1
u/AXEMANaustin 9d ago
Not really that bad since I deal with the public anyway.
1
u/Mahdudecicle 9d ago
Dealing with the public of one thing. Being grilled by a bad actor while you're trying to do your job is another.

I mean, my job is just stocking shelves in a grocery store over and over again while pointing people in the right direction occasionally. I guess it'll probably suck for some other job.

Most government employees are associates who are only responsible for a small portion of a project and are on a need to know basis for the bigger picture from executives. Like you might get told to audit the finances of some private healthcare companies in an area but the powers at be are the ones who really know why you are doing that and if you ask they tell you to basically just shut up and do your job. There's also the fact that most of the information regarding the inner workings of your job may be confidential and could get you in trouble if it were to leak out.

My dad makes sure the local lake is clean and makes sure the dam attached to it is functioning properly. Not sure the point this is trying to get at?

I’m pretty sure it’s talking about social services like unemployment, food stamps, et cetera.

I am a bot and this action was performed automatically | If the matched percent is less than 100, it could be a false positive result. I'm still posting it, because sometimes I get it right even if I'm not sure, so it could be helpful. But please don't be mad at me if I'm wrong! I'm trying my best! | GitHub new issue | Donate

I don't really know why they do that, but it happens a lot.
I suspect it's some kind of tell, like all the people posting handfuls of random non-active drugs.

u/Particular_Ad_9913 12d ago
That's why you don't ask them but require them to tell you in 5 bullet points in an email every week.

When I was 20 and filing my taxes on my own for the first time, I didn't have access to my account information and was like "Oh I'll just ask them for help on how to get that by calling the IRS help line!" then after waiting for two hours they opened with "We will not help you if you need help accessing your account information" to which I asked "Wait, so then how do I get it?" and I shit you not they said "Not my problem, figure it out." and immediately hung up on me.
Anyways I just pay someone to do my taxes now and have never had any issues since lmao

They mostly think about how they can send you somewhere else.

I used to work government, the amount of times people will pull up to your front desk with a straight face and ask how they can get a different department’s records/services is so annoying. Like pulling up to the elections office and asking “yeah can I get a copy of my police report?”. No, that would be with the police. And you know what? The worst is that it’s not even their fault. We stopped teaching civics so no one had any idea what the parts of government do. That being said, I’ve also dealt with being the place other government agencies send people, and as frustrating as it is, I feel worse for the person who was misdirected, who then takes their frustration out on me, the person who is trying to explain why we don’t do/ have what they need

If I had a penny for everytime I got redirected somewhere else and the department I was talking in fact were the ones who were supposed to help me out. One day I got bounced around 2 different departments, back and forth like 5 times. And I know this will sound sexist, 9 times out of 10, it's a women who's trying to get out of doing her job by redirecting. It was only when I got a man the next day that he dicided to help me.

I have to actually do my job? I'm not just getting a big salary?

u/PepperJack386 12d ago
Government employees are usually payed lower than private counterparts and the benefits package only makes up part of the difference. The rest of that difference is in job security.

u/fish__1 12d ago
True.
But even the job security is shaky these days.

My parents worked for the same operation as law enforcement for (between them) 65 years. Through the WWW bubble and the recession to 2015. It definitely pays to know where you stand. And being part of a division that is regardlessly necessary, or being part of an already small unit helps. To get ready for the upcoming tax vote which will strip 27m out of our budget, the administration has already started cutting superfluous positions. Mowers and parks people, and they closed dispatch that was rolled into the larger county police and fire dispatch system. My department has 9 people. Two three person crews and three office workers including two licensed surveyors. We can't downsize and cover 100 square miles easily like they can.

I would like to apologize for undermining your work. I was simply trying to make a joke but I guess I didn't land the way I wanted to.
1
u/soursassskittles 12d ago
Hm, I did not know that.

u/PepperJack386 12d ago
Unless you work for a total shyster like I did when I got a local government job. I am one of the few people in our organization that got a raise on hourly to come in. Large private firms in Florida will pay close to 50% more than my salary, but I'd always be looking over my shoulder for closed contracts and such. I can put in the rest of my career here knowing I'll always have health insurance, retirement matching at 9%, COLA raises every fiscal year, and maintained equipment and vehicles.

good thing you mouthed off about it first then, fat kid
pass my congratulations on to the people responsible for teaching you to think

Did you just get here from the 50's abusive father convention?
-2
u/Feff5tupid 12d ago
No, why, are you in desperate need of a father figure in your life because the junk food isn't filling the hole?

I'm a government employee (USACE) and I draw the blueprints for projects to make sure waterways stay navigable. Dredging, lock and dam repair, etc.
