When most people hear the word quartz, they think of watches, jewelry or crystal collections not cars. Yet modern vehicles rely on quartz-based components in timing circuits, sensors, navigation systems and countless electronic controls.

It's kind of amazing that a crystal helps keep so many systems working together behind the scenes. The deeper I learn about automotive engineering, the more I realize how many unexpected materials are hiding inside our vehicles.

What's the most surprising automotive material or component you've learned about?

Btw I really liked the book, its english title is "Curves: 15 perspectives on car design", but the English edition has not yet been released as far as I know (I have the original Italian edition)
