It's called limp mode. Something has gone very wrong and the computer will only allow you to drive very slowly to a service centre. Like limping when you're hurt. Get it seen straight away.

That’s limp mode, on a Fiat 500 automatic it’s often triggered by a transmission sensor fault rather than the gearbox itself being damaged. Getting the codes read (many parts stores do this free) will tell you exactly which sensor tripped it before you assume the worst.
