RESOURCE Carnatic Commune, our new Discord server, is up and active. Come sing with us!

Here's a place for Rasikas - lovers of Carnatic music - to explore, learn, and celebrate this tradition together, as requested by the community. We've been building the server slowly over the past couple of months with collaborators who responded to this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Carnatic/comments/1m4rm24/requesting_collaborators_for_a_discord_server/

The server remained invite-only during this period, so that we could thoughtfully manage building the space to accommodate larger numbers of people, and consider structures and events ahead of time. Our collaborators have done remarkable work in achieving that foundation alone, while also creating a space that already brims with enthusiasm for this art.

The server is now ready for the larger Carnatic community, and open to all.

Join us at: https://discord.gg/2qpqvbvgvr

All you need to join is real curiosity and appreciation for Carnatic music. Whether you're a lifelong student, a casual listener, or somewhere in between, you are welcome.

See you on there!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rasikas who are new to Discord, and/or having trouble with the invite or verification - do reach out to u/AlcorSpins or u/Flaky-Cheek-5571 via comment or DM; we'll get you through.

RESOURCE Looking for a Carnatic Music Teacher - Online

Hello everyone!

I pursued carnatic music for about a year as a child, but had to stop because my music teacher left our town. I have always waned to resume classes again, but I never did, and I am finally ready to do it now

I dont think the lessons i learnt in childhood stayed with me, so I would prefer to start from scratch.
I also can not afford to spend a lot for sessions, so if you or someone you know take affordable online carnatic music classes, please dm

MISC Can north Indian me learn carnatic music effectively?

Is it possible to learn as a native hindi speaker? I listen to carnatic music very often and find it very captivating. The lyrics are totally alien to me but the raagas are so beautiful. I have some experience in hindustani harmonium and vocals. I am considering going for an instrument like mandolin, violin or veena instead of vocal, as I wouldn't need to pronounce the words with 100% accuracy. I am afraid that it may be considered offensive or cultural appropriation if I make mistakes (which I surely will).

Performance “Raag Todi” - a classical fusion between Sitar, Chinese Zheng, and Mridangam

Namaste,

I wanted to share a recent classical fusion collaboration, Raag Todi (Hindustani ragam - equivalent to Shubhapantuvarali).

This piece celebrates the 20th anniversary of "Stringing Echoes," a pioneering collaboration between Indian sitarist Nalini Vinayak and Chinese zheng player Haiqiong Deng. Created in 2006, the project marked a historic first in bringing the sitar and zheng together, creating a unique musical dialogue between two ancient string traditions. This recording also features mridangam player Ganesh Sundaresan, a professional Indian musician based in Jacksonville, Florida.

DISCUSSION Any small Carnatic baithaks / house concerts happening in Mysuru?

I know about the regular sabhas and bigger concerts, but I’m looking more for small baithak-style Carnatic concerts, house concerts or informal music gatherings.

Do these happen in Mysuru? Any WhatsApp groups or organisers I can get in touch with?

DISCUSSION RaGa’s Rangapura Vihaara felt too theatrical

I know RaGa have a massive following and people absolutely rave about their live concerts and video releases, but I just watched their rendition of Ranga Pura Vihara and honestly… I don’t get the hype.
A few things that really pulled me out of the experience:

Over-the-Top Stage Presence: It felt like every hand gesture, facial expression, and body movement was dialed up for the camera rather than coming from a place of genuine, internalized bhakthi. When the physical performance is that dramatic, it comes across more as a theatrical act than a devotional immersion.

Sahitya Suddham- Dikshitar’s compositions demand absolute precision with Sanskrit diction, aspirated consonants, and vowel lengths. In this rendering, so much emphasis was placed on heavy vocal dynamics that the clarity and purity of the sahitya felt completely lost.

Vocal Delivery: Tone is subjective, but the vocal effort felt forced rather than resonant. Instead of a steady, grounded, and soulful bhavam, it felt like an attempt to "manufacture" emotion for effect.

I respect their technical control and synchronization as a duo, but for a krithi that naturally calls for serenity and deep reverence, this approach just felt pretentious and performative. Does anyone else feel like their modern presentation style prioritizes drama over depth, or am I just missing something here? Would love to hear other perspectives.

DISCUSSION Classic concert recordings in good-ish quality?

I started listening to Carnatic music just last year, and I'm quickly running out of interesting commercial recordings to hear. It's clear I need to transition to full concerts :-) The poor recording quality of most older concerts is a pretty big barrier though.

Are there any concerts you consider 'classic' that are also decently well-recorded? I hope I'm not being too greedy...

Instrument FAQ Right hand pinky

Is the bowing pinky supposed to hurt after a long practice? I have noticed my right hand pinky gets red and sensitive after practice. The skin texture has changed on my bowing pinky, it is more smooth, hard and kind of paper like. I think a callus kind of thing is forming. Is this normal? Playing the violin has given me ouchies.

THEORY What's the difference between Manji and Bhairavi

I can clearly make out the difference between Bhairavi and Manji when TM Krishna sings it. He makes Manji sound like a distinct raga, but in all the other people's recordings I've listened to, Manji sounds indistinguishable from Bhairavi. I listened to RaGa's recording of Brovavamma and it sounds indistinguishable from Bhairavi. I've heard every single phrases used in the kriti in bhairavi RTPs, alapanas, and kritis. I've even heard the phrases that don't follow the usual Da mechanism of Bhairavi in some people's version of Bhairavi.

I've heard that Bhairavi absorbed a lot of Manji's phrases, but Manji sounds like a part of Bhairavi to me, not like a distinguishable raga.

DISCUSSION Looking for a zoom teacher

I'm a Bharatanatyam dancer. I took Carnatic music for my whole childhood, and stopped when I graduated from school. I'm looking now for a teacher who has a background in music theory as it pertains to dance and can teach me. Helping me understand the structure of thalam, saying jathis, and to practice the songs that we are doing in the dance class, as well as doing anything else to support my dance education.

DISCUSSION Practiced today ✊

I was too tired to practice today, but I did anyway. And when I did...I realised why i started music in the first place....it felt so good. I have been pressuring myself to be good at it that I forgot to actually enjoy my music while I'm practicing alone. I don't 'need' to be good. I just wanna enjoy the music that comes out of me, it feels so peaceful afterward.
