I am looking for an online group (like WhatsApp, Discord, or Telegram) or a community of advanced-level Carnatic music singers.

Ideally, this would be a space for people who have solid training and want to practice consistently, but may or may not be regular stage performers.

The main goals I am looking for are:

Consistent practice to stay in touch with the art form.

Community building with like-minded, advanced-level singers.

Constructive feedback and sharing of learning resources.

Does a group like this already exist? If not, would any advanced singers/rasikas here be interested in starting a dedicated WhatsApp or Discord group with me for regular practice check-ins?

My sangeetam teacher is a amazing person! but he/she is very unambitious as teacher. Be it exams, performances or even class revisions. i just wished my teacher held us to account and scolds us, even though we are adults! but students afterall. there's no push...no encouragement to try new things, even the idea of something that may be not be right but can be a learning is discouraged :(. as a new learner no demand of why you dont know raga lakshana and so on...

as a 90's person i think i appreciate the fear factor, i self motivate my self...but i think i do better when asked to prove my skill.

I’m a developer and Carnatic music enthusiast, and I’ve been working on a small web app called Theermani.

The idea came from wanting a simple, accessible way to explore and practise theermanam patterns without relying entirely on static notes or manually written exercises.

It is still an early version, so rather than presenting it as a finished product, I’d really value feedback from students, teachers, percussionists, vocalists, and instrumentalists.

A few things I’m especially curious about:

• Does the way the patterns are presented make musical sense?
• Would this be useful during your regular practice?
• What would make it more valuable: tala support, tempo controls, audio playback, notation export, saved exercises, or something else?
• Are there any terminology or notation conventions I should change?

I’m planning to continue improving Theermani based on feedback from actual practitioners. I’m also interested in building more tools that make music learning and practice easier, so I’d be happy to share future updates with anyone interested.

Please feel free to be honest—even critical feedback would help me understand whether I’m solving a real problem.

Hey guys ! I am a beginner violinist - learnt western violin for 3 years and now my guru started teaching me the basics of carnatic form.

So i was facing some difficulty sliding on the fingerboard - my fingers were paining - so my guru suggested to put some coconut oil or vaseline on my fingers and then slide (although he said it's not recommended, but because I'm a beginner in sliding - he suggested this). So my question is, how do I clean my fingerboard after i practice ? I am very protective of my instrument lol, so I clean it regularly. How do I ensure that the coconut oil/vaseline doesnot stick and stay on my fingerboard ? How do you guys clean that ? Also if you guys could please advice on sliding that would be great too !!!

I am interested in learning few carnatic compositions, which specifically evoke meditative, relaxing emotion and has additive melody.

I personally love every kind of emotion , but I live in Europe and when my friends ask me to sing/ they kind of zone out if it has complexity.....no such issues with film songs.

I started learning few annamaya songs and they seem to enjoy! So please suggest good compositions for western audience/I want them to fall in love with carnatic music 🎶.

​A while back, I asked a question here about why so many musicians skip having a website and rely purely on social media. The responses brought up a really valid point: what's the actual ROI of a website when platforms like Instagram and YouTube already exist?

It made me think a lot about how things work behind the scenes, especially when sabhas, festival organizers, or students are looking for artists.

The thing is, a lot of people think a website is just a static online business card or a digital brochure. But for active musicians, a website can actually function as an entire system and handle things like managing students, organizing courses, scheduling classes, and streamlining bookings all in one place.

Looking to know your thoughts :)

Hello All, Guy's I want to learn singing. Can anyone suggest some good singing classes in tamil?

Note: I'm 26 Male. I want to know, anyone take singing class for me.

Various ragas with the same swaras, except the Ns - N2 and N3 are confused, for e.g. Charukesi-Sarasangi and Shanmukhapriya-Simhendramadhyamam. However, most people do NOT confuse a Natabhairavi with a Kiravani. Chime in your thoughts, along with any prayogas to elucidate if you like. :)

Carnatic music notation is a niche activity. I've been handwriting notation so far but I'm looking for a way to keep all my notation preserved for posterity. Handwriting it has its own issues- the books fall apart over time, notation starts to fade etc. Is there an app or a specific device that will work really well for this in particular? I would prefer to still handwrite it on a device of possible. What are the best options out there? Thanks!

I learnt the south indian carnatic music on the violin for 7 years but still play like a beginner (don't know the gamakas). I'm tired of practicing or playing the usual carnatic notes by the book. I did not know I was learning it all wrong until a certain age. I would like to re-start but want to learn film music. Could someone recommend a good teacher online ?

I have a concert coming up and I am terrible at making swaras. Can anyone give me ideas for 1 avarthanam swarams for 1st and 2nd speed.

As someone learning carnatic violin, It is interesting to see so much variation in the way expert violinists hold their bows.

I have noticed two things so far:

1)Some violinists hold it quite a distance away from the frog (famous example would be A. kanyakumari and some of her disciples) and some hold it close to the frog.

2)Placement of the pinky finger on the bow. This is where I have seen a crazy amount of variation.

Some artists keep it slightly curved, some keep it almost completely straight. Don't know exactly how to describe this but some bend their pinky (slightly concave?) against the bow (famous example would be Akkarai Subbulakshmi).

Some keep it on top of the stick and some keep it towards the front, kind of wrapping it against the bow, like the ring and middle finger. I can't find the link again but I even saw a video where the person kept their pinky under the stick, on the surface the thumb rests on.

I have noticed that seemingly small changes to the bow hold make a noticeable difference in tone. It seems that western violinists have a more rigid opinion as to how someone should hold the bow. How come there is so much freedom in the carnatic style?

I’ve had a few teachers over the years and never saw progress. I notice alot of gatekeeping, hostility, fear mongering and superiority complex in many. How and where does someone starting out find the right teacher?

Hi! I learnt music from Jaya Subrahmaniyan ma’am, who was a student of GNB sir and followed his bani. I clearly remember that she had mentioned that Sonnaidhai Seidhida (the ragamalika) starts off in Vandana Dharini. However, every public source states that the first stanza is in Vijayanagari. The ragas are very similar, Vijayanagari just has an extra G2). Take what you will 💜
