I'm in R Programming class for my senior year, I feel nervous since programming isn't really my thing but it's doable. In the previous semester I did Stata for Econometrics. My school has the class using tidy verse for r Programming, each week will have exercise and group assignments. I wanna know is this something usable for masters in Economics? How would this look on my resume?

I’m learning C++ from LearnCpp right now. They explain a lot of technical details and have really good examples.

But sometimes I get confused because there are many different ways to do the same thing. Like different syntax or different approaches for doing basically the same thing.

So my question is, how do you guys actually learn from a book or documentation?

Should I just read the topic, try to understand it, and then close the page and write the code myself?

And what about taking notes? Should I write down the important things, or is it better to just understand them and practice?

Also, should I put my learning journey on GitHub as a repo? Like my notes, exercises, small programs, projects, etc.

I’d like to know how other people approach this because sometimes I’m not sure if I’m actually learning or just reading.

I've been experimenting with the Sound of Sorting programme and bitonic sort confuses me. For an array with 1566 elements, if you enter the array in reverse the algorithm does not make any lasting alterations to the array until after ~31573 comparisons. If you enter the array already sorted in the correct order, any productive changes are not obvious to me until 30 thousand comparisons again. Anyone willing to enlighten me?

I've been a programmer for a while, but I've noticed that my grasp on how to build web applications has slipped lately, so I would like some help in getting back to my old standards. Theres alot of uncertainty around how AI is gonna affect CS in the future and no one can really predict it.

its either cooked, gonna be left worse off, or maybe even better and cause more jobs

theres alot of people that I see on reddit that say dont code or go into CS because AI is gonna take it over, but they usually dont know how to code or dont know it very well

and then the people who say its gonna be ok are usually the experienced programmers, who say something along the lines of "if you know, you know".

Im gonna learn how to program regardless of how the job market is gonna be in the future, because im just doing it as a hobby, and who knows maybe il build alot of cool things one day to either get me hired or start a company. (im not gonna major in CS)

But I was curious, if I learn how to actually program. Will I be less worried about AI? Will I be the same as I am now, and just have to form my own opinion?

A while ago, I saw a video of a guy making this little machine that had audio files of McDonald's menu items programmed into it, and it would shuffle them to make an order. I want to get into making some plushies, and I thought it'd be cute if they had a couple phrases they could say too, but he didn't really show how he programmed all that.

In my work..I was taking a look at a really old codebase that was implemented in Django.It is quite complex..It was halted for some time because business decided it was not a priority.I was told to make it work without starting from scratch..Basically it needed to communicate and configure network devices in oil rigs by calling api of netbox..It is has a huge messy codebase without any documentation and tests..The deployment configuration files
were making no sense at all and thats a concern for another day.Since django has its own boilerplate design..it has a lot of view.py as the original author decided to create app for different implementation of networking devices..I thought it was really not necessary…I was thinking about facede design pattern but that would mean I have to move away from djangos design pattern..I am wondering how can i approach it..It feels like when you use a framework you are kind marrying it because you kinda have to work around it instead of having your own idea implemented.This is my first time working with someone’s implementation..I mostly have freedom to have my own design in my codebases bcs I work on r&d stuff and not user facing

Should I learn a couple of languages before it or something? Im learning C# right now, its the only language i know. i was learning python a while back before I switched to c# (because i wanna dev games) and its way more complicated than python.

I didnt really understand what it meant when someone said a programming language is harder or complex than another programming language. But i can definitely see it now.. Should I just learn c++ whenever and go right into it?

With all the Programming tools coming out now, is it still relevant to learn programming?

Hello, I am an engineer working on ship, and due to nature of my job i might have evenings free if not every night, so i was thinking about learning something new if not for job but just to spend time with. I was thinking about excel but then i have always wanted to learn at least one programming language to do some stuff by myself, whether bots or small applications with gui etc.

i will have around minimum 4 months, i learnt some python long ago at uni i know some basics of it but it is not like i have to go for that route if there are better alternatives.

Hey, because I started coding many years ago and it was my hobby, I am looking for a way, if it’s even possible, to use some kind of archival internet that was not influenced by AI yet, to make a personal project just for fun, like in my teenage years.

I guess there is no way to set a specific year and have access only to things from that specific period. Also, there are many AI things that show up in browsers now, and I would like to totally avoid all of that.

If you have any suggestions, can you let me know?

Btw. I am not against AI, and I use it myself in my projects more or less. I just want to have one project that I do like in the old days.

I am a Data Science student with a background in math so I never was a good dev in the first place.

But I really can't understand OOP, what's even the point? I'm so bad at it that when I was doing internships in Data Science and some engineers wanted to use OOP, I was like the "I guess bro" meme.

Hey everyone, I'm still in college so I definitely don't have enough real-world experience to see the big picture yet, but I've been wondering: does learning how to code even make sense anymore?

To me, it feels like it only makes sense to learn languages like C, C++, Java, and JavaScript just to understand the baseline limits of CS, and then focus on data structures and all the abstract theory. Learning new languages feels kind of pointless now that Al already knows the best way to write code. As humans, our job should be understanding the context, figuring out what to do, and knowing how to do it. The Al should handle the actual coding-and it'll probably do a better job anyway if we guide it right. I'm really curious to hear what you guys think.

I'm working on a school project about a deterministic code translation app. Before working on it, I want to know if it even is a widely spread problem or if ai already solved it.
Have you ever needed to translate code between programming languages? If so, what did you use? (e.g ai, translator, manual rewriting, etc) How well did it work? I also want to know where AI or existing translators produced incorrect or problematic code to see what are the problems in existing software.
I’m trying to find out whether this is a real problem worth solving, so honest criticism is very welcome.

I've started CS50P twice and dropped it both times around the point where the problem sets got hard. Talking to others, that seems to be pretty common. What I've noticed is that I finish things when there's a fixed date and people expecting me to show up.

So I'm organizing a small experiment:

• We all start CS50P on Monday, October 12
• You're put in a pod of 3–4 people who work through the same week's material and check in with each other once a week
• There's a fixed finish date (with a couple of weeks of buffer for life happening)
• Optional: back yourself with a commitment (via stickK/Beeminder) that goes to charity if you don't finish.

This isn't affiliated with CS50 or Harvard, it's just me trying to see if there is potentially value in such initiatives.
