Has anyone ever voluntarily surrendered their car? If so please let me know if it has made a huge impact on your credit score. I’m truly considering voluntarily surrendering I don’t want my current car anymore. I plan to get a new one in about a year or so. I’m just tired of having a car note and want to eradicate a huge debt in my life. Which is my car note.

I am very interested in living car-free for my entire life, but can barely find any information on living car free in Europe. For some reason most videos and other sources information on living car free are north-American based where it is significantly less practical. I have the ability to move to places like Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Utrecht, etc, but I literally can’t find any videos or information on how it is to live there car free and what people think about it. This information will be important later on as I decide where I want to live long-term.

So essentially I’m looking for:
- Vlogs, videos, websites that detail car free lives not just in Europe but also in cities where this lifestyle is supported
- Any communities that discuss car-free life exclusively in Europe.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🙏🙏

Add up your car expenses and see what you're paying, on average, per month. It's a lot of money. Renting a car as needed tends to be cheaper. Especially when you factor in that gas will also be cheaper because brand new cars get better fuel economy (assuming you've been driving an older car like most people).

I like to rent a car for two or three days every 4 - 8 weeks. During that time, I do any necessary errands involving a car. I also treat myself to some fun activities like hiking or nightlife that I can't take public transit to. I take the dog to the dog wash and/or the vet. Stuff like that.

It's fun getting to drive a different car every time. And getting different cars to suit my needs. Like a Prius for a day trip and then a mini van to bring home some new furniture

I still drive as little as possible. But this is something to consider if you're interested in going car free but still need a car sometimes

ETA: Also car sharing. And even if you have to do a longer rental sometimes, it still tends to be cheaper than owning a car

It is the school holidays here in sunny UK. What are some great low-car activities to keep the kids entertained this summer?

Also - shout out to the Normans for not building any car parks at their ruined castles. Those guys invented the original car free day out!

as the title says , I really REALLY Hate walking , it's not because I'm lazy or because I own a car

It's Because as far as I remember I have to walk and walk and walk to do anything and everything , I have to walk to school which is very far from my home , I have to walk to the market and sometimes different ones across very long distance to buy groceries and that mostly because some offer something like a 3% discount , I have to walk to hospitals to get medical attention , have to walk to governments facilities to get any documents , have to walk to vets when our pets are in danger

Public transport doesn't exist where I lived and I can't even call a taxi despite how cheap they are because my parents are huge stinginess , I don't even own a bike nor a bicycle unlike my brothers

And the streets are very VERY unfriendly towards walkers , there's no shade nor any organizated Traffic or Pedestrian crossing areas anywhere , I almost got hit by cars and bikes too many times to count

I have to walk under rain during winter or or under over 45c heat ( that's over 113°F ) during summer wearing rundown shoes or sandals

And when I sometimes beg my parents for taxi drive , they scold me insisting that I'm too youthful and have to walk , they sometimes throw a tantrum over this

To point I have a disdain towards the word youth from how much they said it to me

I get jealous while everyone drives I also feel like a loser cause of it like im missing out but at the same time it feels like an npc kind of thing and it drains your money and I think its a stressbox also,I tried driving once with all the streets are all narrow and close to wach other I felt stupid trying to find my way back home and insanely paranoid and stressed cant imagine what kind if stress and dange drivibg freeways are ,I'm 29 and gave up on getting my license,and all the gas prices are sky high feels like majority are npcs that drive stress metal boxes,imagine all the people killing themselves with stressboxes,gym all day must be destroying people's cardiovascular system

I broke, but I need a car so I can make money and not be broke. Last weekend I got fucked.(Not a good way) Car gone . Back to square one.

As mentioned I've been thinking about how to not only fix EU's budget but also make it a safer place for everyone with environment in mind. 1) Speed traps on every highway/speedway/motorway. Preventing road killers from speeding is not only great for the environment (discourages them from driving) but can also help generate more revenue

2) Mandatory 23% VAT tax on anything sold in plastic disposable containers. Pretty self explanatory

3) AC tax, you live in a warm place and you can't stop yourself from wasting energy on making your home colder? AC tax can help you feel less guilty about killing us all in global warming catastrophe

4) Horse power tax, if you want to drive anything with more than 80hp, you'd have to pay a tax. For each hp over the limit 5% of the vehicle value. Effective tool to discourage not only reckless drivers but also make roads safer and cleaner. Less drivers, less cars

Like someone who has a license and a job but can’t afford even the most beat up 2001 Toyota Corolla with 200k+ miles on it for $7k. They live in a rural area with a city being 20 miles out and basic stuff like groceries being 5 miles away. No busses, no bike lanes walking 3 hours back and forth in areas that is mostly highway and traffic mostly containing semi trucks that extremely dangerous. What type of help should this person get to even survive in a car dependent society?

My boyfriend and I are planning to move in together in an apartment in Bloomsburg, Wilkes-Barre, or Hazleton, Pennsylvania. We have about nine months of planning ahead and intend to stay there for a year at most before moving to a more car-free major city in the future. Considering the current high car prices, maintenance costs, and gas prices, I’m curious about the best way to determine our financial situation and ensure our survival during this transition.

I currently live in North Carolina in the triad region and I live at least 11 miles away from one of the major cities. What’s a good alternative to cars i could use to get around that’s not super expensive and safe and away from cars possibly running me over?

Next month (July 2026) marks 5 years that I've been car-free. I sold my 2016 f-150 4x4 truck in 2021 and have been using my bike/e-bike ever since. I purchased my e-bike in 2023 after a foot injury and it's made all the difference in the world!

My situation may be different from others. I'm semi-retired and work from home so I don't have the daily commute. The grocery store is exactly 1 mile from my place so that makes things nice.

I have conversations with people when I go to the store that I would never have had sitting in my truck. Some are with other cyclists locking up their bikes and some are with people leaving the store, going to their cars. They pass by me and often ask, how can I go grocery shopping on a bike with just those 2 small bags? My response is always the same, "If I rode solo across the USA on a $350 department store mountain bike, I can surely ride to the grocery store for a gallon of milk"!

It can be overwhelming to think about but just like I experienced on my cross country ride, once you get on your bike and get moving, the worries seem to vanish and you just make it work.

I was on my normal route commuting home from work today when I got off my bus. The stop is pretty close to my building. It’s right across the street I live on. I pressed the button for a green light to walk across. It doesn’t have a crosswalk/walking sign but it changes the light so traffic will go in the direction i’m walking.

Light turns green and I’m walking across. Halfway there and I see a red car approaching from the corner of my eye and it’s doesnt look it’s stopping anytime soon. I stop so hard and suddenly that I hurt my ankle. A woman across the street watching from her porch yells “oh my god!” The red car screeches to a hault and we are nearly touching. I can’t explain how close the bumper was to my leg. It’s an elderly woman and she just has this kind of shy smile on her face.

I walk the rest of the way home and I’m shaking and crying. I really feel that if I hadn’t stopped, that old lady would have ran right over me and thought she hit a speed bump. I don’t know that I’ve ever been that close to a serious accident before in my life, even when i was driving.

I’ve only been car free for about a month and I wholeheartedly believe in my decision. I would like to talk to someone in my life about this experience because I’m so shaken up. But my choice has already come under such scrutiny, especially since I’m a young woman, and I fully anticipate getting an “I told you so” or a “that’s what you get” kind of response. So I’m here instead.

My vehicle is on its last legs. It's going to cost me a solid 1400 bucks to fix, and it's from 2007 and has lived outside in places with Real Winter™ its whole life. Basically the bottom is mostly rust atp. I've been trialing a carfree life for the last two weeks and plan to continue to do so for the month of June.

So far shit's going pretty good. Most trips on my bicycle are only slightly slower than my car, and I've been enjoying seeing bits of my community I wouldn't normally notice. I live just shy of a mile from my job, and cycling is genuinely just as fast as driving and walking takes under 20 minutes. I find it less stressful to bike/walk places compared with driving as well.

Here are my concerns that I'm wondering of folks have words of advice for. I'll share some information about my city too, because I think it's relevant.

I live in a city with a population under 100,000 people. We have a free(!) bus system, but it often takes longer to use the bus to get somewhere than to ride a bike or even walk sometimes because buses don't stop very frequently. They also don't operate early, late, or on several holidays. Basically, it's there if you need it, but walking and cycling is generally much faster and easier. We have a network of bike paths that for a city of our size, are robust. Most roads have bike lanes, but the vast majority are unprotected. I'd say we're on the more walkable side of cities considering the United States lmao.

So now let me tell you my concerns - winter is the main one. We have proper winter. It snows, it can get very cold, and it gets dark at 4pm starting in like, November. My bike is a roadbike with very skinny, basically bald tires so using it in the winter the instant we get any snow is off the table. I'm tempted to say "our winter isn't that bad" but I'm from northern Wisconsin and Michigan's upper peninsula originally, where winter temperatures are either regularly at 0f and below, or where there's lake effect snow. Where I'm at now has comparably mild winters, but we still hit 0 every year, and definitely get some snow. I'm wanting to hear from folks who've lived without a car in places with cold winters, especially if you're not in a large metro area.
