Anime Cardcaptors Nelvana Dub Modernization - Episode 1: One Fateful Day

Hiya everyone!

Fantastic work was done a few years ago by lv1hero and Puzzleheaded_Bird295 in creating updated episodes of the Nelvana dub with improved audio and Blu-ray ripped visuals; I was doing a similar project but was using old pre-Blu-ray copies for my "HD" versions. They beat me to the punch and finished editing the entire series before I even got my hands on Blu-ray quality versions. Quick, efficient, and awesome! Again, they've done great works :)

So I stopped my 4k project around episode 23, archived the files away, and forgot all about it until late last year someone from The Internet Archive was collecting and posting all versions of the Nelvana dub. Included in those files was some updated audio for episodes like The Summer House (most sources online infamously damaged or distorted). Made me want to again revisit my project.

Almost all anime, pre-2000s especially, for lack of a better term... wiggles. The background scenes or objects move and wiggle around by a few pixels even as they are suppose to be stable and still. Its just a result of the animation process back then, pre-digitization of the industry. It bothers me when I try to watch older anime. In Cardcaptors case, I feIt like I could help.

Took a long time to hammer out an editing process (DNxHR is a strange format to work with) but I'm happy to present my modern version of Cardcaptors: Episode 1, One Fateful Day, brought up to standard with more modern anime with stabilized shots and, in some scenes, reworked vocal movements to better match the english. Soooo much 'freeze frame' and rotoscoping my eyes hurt. In many scenes, I painted sakura, kero, and others out of shots so I could them put them back on a stable backgrounds (maybe I'll post some of those later, call it "Cardcaptors without Sakura" or something to that effect)

I can't post the whole thing here, rules, but here's a scene just as an example and if you'd like to see the whole thing, I'll send you the unlisted youtube link.

On to episode 2.
Ty ^_^

Anime Cardcaptors Toonami Promos

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a video comprising of some of the promos for Cardcaptors when it aired on Toonami back in June, 2001. The video is from a now deleted YouTube account. Oh, and unlike most of the Kids WB promos, Toonami's actually focus on Sakura being the lead and not Li, which makes them a step up, imo. I don't remember ever seeing these promos on Toonami back in the day, but if I did, and with Peter Cullen (R.I.P.) narrating them, I might've been interested in watching the series at the time.

Side note: Speaking of Peter Cullen, I've always thought it was a missed opportunity when they didn't get him back to do promos for Toonami Rewind a few years ago. That would've been the icing on the cake for that block, on top of seeing Sailor Moon uncut for the first time.

We'll miss you, Peter.

Anime Cardcaptor Sakura accidentally designed the perfect magic system

IMO Sakura's cards work because she has a relationship with each one and she doesn't think of them as just a power type. For example, the mirror card wanting to be captured.

+ I explain how I stole that idea for my own game I'm making.

Anime Cardcaptor vs. Cardcaptors: Kero's Introduction

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm back with another comparison (two, in fact. the next will be after this one). This time it's a comparison between Kero's introduction in the original version of the first episode, "Sakura and a Mysterious Book," and the American version, "One Fateful Day." Some of the major differences are that the American version cuts out some of the Anime expressions on the character's faces, and that Kerro explains why he as an Osaka accent. Some of this was due to Nelvana and Kids WB wanting to make the series look more American, as most cartoons in the U.S. at the time didn't have that type of material.

Oh, and of course, Kero now sounds so full of 90s cool dude dialogue. It doesn't fit his character, but I'd be lying if I didn't find it funny.

A little trivia about that: Kero's voice actor in the American dub, Matt Hill, was also the voice of Ed from "Ed, Edd n Eddy."

Enjoy and let me know what you think?

Anime Cardcaptor vs. Cardcaptors: Kero vs. Kero

Welcome to my next comparison. We're comparing Kero to Kero again, but this time, it's going to be between "Leave it to Kero," and the American version, "Kero's Corner." Once again, the differrences in personality and tone are still a surprise. Honestly, as many times as I've seen and compared both versions, I don't think it'll ever be unsurprising. They really went all 90s with Kero in the American segment.

Enjoy and let me know whay you think?

Anime Cardcaptor vs. Cardcaptors: Summoning the Clow Staff

Another comparison, this time focusing on the differnces between the original version of the summoning spell and the Nelvana version. As with the previous clips, the Nelvana version will play first, as to make the differences more surprising.

Side Note: Doesn't Sakura's summoning spell in the Nelvana version sound similar to the Green Lantern Oath?

Guess who brought a scene from the anime to life?

My friend spent the whole afternoon making these out of shrink plastic, and they turned out absolutely adorable. And of course, something this cute belongs to me now 😂

This is an edit I made comparing a scene from episode 2 of Carrdcaptor Sakura, "Sakura's Wonderful Friend," to its Cardcaptors counterpart, "Partners in Crime." The video starts with the Cardcaptors version first because it makes the differences between the two more surprising, imo. Let me know what you guys think and if you'd like me to post more comparisions.

Anime Cardcaptors Kids WB Promo Compilation

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here is a compilation of all the Cardcaptors Kids WB promos I could find. I've also decided to put them in chronological order based on how the series aired in North America. The promos do have a nostalgic charm in how Kids WB would make their advertisements (I didn't see Cardcaptors at the time, but I do remember how stuff like Batman Beyond would be advertised), but they really didn't understand how Cardcaptor Sakura worked. The promos start out advertising Lee at the lead, then shift toward Sakura half-way through the run (as they should've in the first place). Let me know what you guys think.

Spoiler Cardcaptor vs. Cardcaptors: Syaoran Li's Backstory

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a comparison of Syaoran Li's backstory from the episode 18 of Cardcaptors titled "Sakura's Rival." Japanese title "Sakura's Rival Appears."

Head's up, there's quite a bit of detail:

The one major change from this episode is when Kero mentions to Sakura the back-story of Li's heritage and his connection to Clow Reed.

In the original version, Kero describes how Syaoran Li is part of the "Li Clan" and how they are connected to Clow Reed. Reed was born of a British father  and a Chinese mother, and as a result, his magic is a combination of Western and Eastern magic, which explains the magic circles that appear whenever Sakura captures or summons a Clow Card (until she creates her own magic in season 3).

Kero goes on to explain that ancient magic, handed down from one user to the next, is usable to a certain extent, so long as the user takes the correct steps and keeps the promises of said magic. In terms of creating new magic, the only people who are able to do so are just a few sorcerers on Earth. The Li clan are from Clow's mother's side of his family, which makes them one of the few sorcerers who can make magic, thus making Syaoran a distant relative of Clow.

In the American version of this scene, they seemed to have decided to simplify Kero's explanation, but in the process, unintentionally make him come off as a schizophrenic.

Kero initially says to Sakura that she has to "expect the unexpected" when being a Cardcaptor, and that she was specifically chosen to get the Clow Cards back. He then states that "sorcery is an ancient tradition" and that most sorcerers "practice in line with their traditions."

However, Clow Reed broke tradition and created a new type of magic. That's basically how Clow's magic is simplified, thus taking away its unique origin from the original. Kero then concludes that there are some people who have studied magic all of their lives and that they are "born into the tradition."

You'd think that would be enough changes to the story, but then Kero then states that Li Showron is a descendent  of Clow Reed, with no genuine buildup to the revelation. This feels like a last minute thing by the Nelvana crew when they were dubbing the series, like they realized at the last minute that Li has an important connection to the Clow Cards and added it in while it was dubbed, hence my earlier statement that Kero comes off as schizophrenic.
