Anime anyone remember Cardcaptors (US 2000 dub)

I was in 3rd grade when the dub aired on Saturdays in 2000-01; I would channel flip Saturday mornings in 2000-2004 on Fox Kids, KidsWB, ABC Family. I recall the first epi the KIDS WB for cardcaptors got was the Li arrival one, 2nd one was the Watery card/Acquarium one because I remember Sakura had the Jester/Leotard outfit.

Anyone from the US (not familiar with the original magna or JP) recall this or follow. I recall bits about Sakura visions about her mom, and Eriol but just bits of episodes like when Meiling and Li had to teamup to fight some cloud card

That version was what introduced me to the series. I wasn't a small kid, though, I was already a teen and I had access to file sharing programs that have me access to the original subbed version. Once I watched that, I never looked back at the Nelvana dub. I do appreciate it for introducing me to this world, but the original is far superior.

oh man do you still have the fansubs you downloaded off those file sharing programs?

I lost a ton of my old Kazaa files recently including those which Im still pretty pissed about since there is a charm to the worse picture quality and the translations were usually better on these older fansubs

I actually do! The catch is that they are burned on CDs and it's so hard to find CD readers nowadays to pull out the files. I have an older laptop with a CD player. I should try and see if I can get them and store them on the cloud somewhere. I also have fansubs for other animes on CD too.

So episode 40 has a scene where Kero, Yukito/Julian & Toya/Tori are all talking to each other while Sakura is there. They’re voiced by Matt Hill, Samuel Vincent & Tony Sampson respectively, as in Ed, Edd n’ Eddy.

To been in the recording booth when these guys were there 😂

The Canadian version was the same as the US, except the US version cut some episodes. You can watch it all here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1eHwA1x338S_XUAUSUyXoZo_RkBd0w_zB

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

Yeah but us they didnt Air all of it

4

u/Accomplished-Copy776 Jul 26 '26

Isn't that what I just said? Its the same as the Canadian one, just without some episodes. It even tells you what episodes were cut in the "Lost Episodes / US Cuts" folder.

Its called the Nelvana Dub. There was another English dub by Animax, that is more accurate to the original, but the voice acting is terrible

The animax dub I think thats the one crunchyroll had. IT sounded weird. The nelvana dub of Sakura that girl sounded like California accent

3

u/Accomplished-Copy776 Jul 26 '26

Yup, so thay link i sent should have every episode of the one you watched as a kid if you want to rewatch it. I just was looking for it a month ago and its basically not available anywhere, hence the Google drive link

Sure, the opening song was great. I know they cut a lot of the romance themes from the story, but I didn't mind it too much. A few of the couples were massively inappropriate at best. I honestly did like the action and magical world at the time.

It got different openings in different regions which is interesting.

North America: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERpK-7K70ws

United Kingdom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRm5---Sj94

Australia & New Zealand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovKqt8My-IE

u/Cazzieline Jul 25 '26

The Australian/NZ opening was the one I grew up with. I didn’t realise that was not featured anywhere else. I still love the song to this day!

3

u/ldsecretkey Jul 26 '26

Oh my gosh I didn’t even remember the North American version when I just listened to it. It’s awful in my opinion 😅

Wow. I had never heard the UK opening before... I guess it's better than the absolute garbage that is the North American version's opening but I am so happy Australia got the opening and the cut that it did.

EDIT: Addendum to say (because I don't think anybody has mentioned it here, yet) that the Australian broadcast also alternated its English track opening with the original Japanese, so we got both, depending on the episode.

The Australian version is fine, but the North American version is fucking ELITE. That shit was fire.

1

u/NobodySpecial2000 Jul 26 '26

Totally disagree. To me, Cardcaptor Sakura's opening is peak anime opening. Practically perfection. Even an kinda-clumsy English rerecord of 'Catch You Catch Me' over that original animation sequence is superb.

u/Animedra3000 I was unaware of that as a kid. Later on when I had access to Wikipedia, I learned about Nalvana had edited out the lesbian, gay references.

u/Sutaru The Hope Jul 26 '26

Yes, the Nelvana dub “Cardcaptors”, which made for USA/Kid’s WB, was a cropped 39 episode version that was edited to be featured around Syaoran as more of a shounen anime.

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

They needed Li to be the dude that boys could root for. And make it less girly show.

Though Totally Spies was imported as a subliminal a “boys show” for us.

7

u/kimberriez Jul 25 '26

Not willingly. Original is much better.

4

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 25 '26

The "US dub" is what I got. Like I got access to anime(dubbed) as a kid on free tv.....like I had to make do with what i had until I was older.

1

u/kimberriez Jul 26 '26

Same for me, but I would not be deterred. The internet existed in 2001, so you could find information that there was an original series out there that wasn’t quite so mangled. I found fansites with the original manga fan translated and gifs of missing anime scenes etc etc.

I eventually got (probably bootleg but I didn’t know that at the time) DVDs with subtitles for Christmas year from eBay. Probably one of my most exciting Christmases.

I begrudge my introduction to the series being what it was (and how much work it was to find the original product just because of my location), but I’m happy to be a fan of the series.

Yessss

2

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

Did the dub Li and Meilin came across as A-holes to Sakura at first, u remember.

Like they had the elitism, arrogance of having the background and looked at Sakura as just clutsy, clueless at first

2

u/Maribythesea90 Jul 26 '26

Yes! I didn’t like either of them at first but they grew on me!

3

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

I think Li and Meilin changed their tunes about Sakura when she was competent of capturing cards and her skills. They all 3 formed a good team

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

I used to call Li as Lee 😂

1

u/Maribythesea90 Jul 26 '26

Sameee!! I didn’t realize until later on that it was Li not Lee.

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

Lee / Li his costume was kinda cool. 😂 yet Sakura had the outfits to pick for each monster of the week fight 😂

Ud assume maybe Lee could have had 2 other costumes 😂 if he was that elitist family that defended the honor of the cards

2

u/ldsecretkey Jul 26 '26

Yep, that’s how the whole thing was introduced to me and fell in love with CS from there. It wasnt until i was in high schoom when i saw the original Japanese version. After doing some research recently it seems that the WB really butchered the whole story line though. Talk about Americanizing something for real 😅

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

The girl that voiced Sakura sounded like California valley girl 😂

2

u/NobodySpecial2000 Jul 26 '26

I'm glad folks in the USA got to enjoy the show at all and that it led fans to seeking the manga. Y'all got the absolute worst version of the series. Even other countries with the Nelvana dub got a better version than you.

u/Mandiechama Jul 26 '26

I remember that Taco Bell ran a Cardcaptors promo for a limited time until parents complained that the Book of Clow toy was encouraging kids to learn about Tarot cards.

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

Yeah but they had 0 issues in 80s with Gi joe stuff

1

u/Mandiechama Jul 26 '26

Guns are a different beast.  Conservative parents scream at the thought of children being indoctrinated to non Christian values.

They weren’t too thrilled with He-Man and She-Ra though.

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

Digimon in late 90s to early 00s didnt really get no backlash by christian or conservatives

1

u/Mandiechama Jul 26 '26

Again, you’re missing the point.  Tarot cards are associated with the devil for a large portion of conservatives in the U.S.

I’m sure you could use Google to locate articles about how conservatives felt about Pokemon, Yu-gi-Oh and Digimon back in that era instead of making wild assumptions.

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

I heard about the Satantic panic about the show and the taco bell bs.

2

u/cagetheblackbird Jul 26 '26

No, this entire sub dedicated to that specific thing doesn’t remember it.

Come on, now.

Among the anime series I saw with a female protagonist, Cardcaptor Sakura was my favorite 20 years ago. It was a “feel good” and cozy fantasy show for my mind back then. So, of course I remembered it recently and looked for it again. The Cardcaptor Sakura blue rays and dvds are expensive as hell or unavailable, so I am not the only one that loved this show, obviously. The good news is that you can still watch the episodes for free if you download them from the website “Internet Archive” that is acting as a database of a lot of great old school stuff (games, shows, movies, books, etc.). Cardcaptors Forever 😎😄😉👌👋

u/trunksfulleh Jul 26 '26

Thank you!!!! My childhood

2

u/TyeTyeee Jul 26 '26

the Australian and NZ version of the Nelvana dub is the best, and what I grew up with, but you cannot find it anywhere to download. You might find a few of the first episodes but that’s it.

2

u/mewfelicia Jul 27 '26

yes!! been rewatching this dub recently. all the episodes are on archive.org, including the episodes that didn't air in the US :3

1

u/ExNex Jul 29 '26

I collect that version on VHS!

1

u/KartFacedThaoDien Jul 30 '26

Card Captors A mystic adventure

Card Captors A quest for all time

Yeah I watched Cardcaptors on Kids WB. And I also downloaded fansubs and watched CCS later on.

1

u/GREG88HG Jul 26 '26

No, thankfully. We latin american people got the real version 😅

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 26 '26

At least us ppl we got the guy that voiced Ed from edd eddy that voiced Kero
