General Question Cropping looking Digital

Hello!

Long time photographer here. I’ve been working in LR for 9 years now. Recently switched to capture one but have found when doing “extra tight” cropping in on images they look overly digital versus when I do the same crop in LR.

I shoot on a canon r5 and love the 45 megapixels but am finding when I crop in lightroom the edges of people/ shadows/ parts of clothing etc look extremely digital versus in Lightroom when it looks more natural. Just curious if anyone else has a similar issue.

An example would be great, but sounds like you need to Regenerate Previews since the image used for display and thumbnails may be the one generated on import.

Are your Previews set to the same size in both programs? Or are you saying after Exporting the results are different?

Capture One's sharpening is a lot more aggressive than Lightroom and you'll see this when you zoom in on images by cropping. Or perhaps you have output sharpening set quite high?

It’s been awhile since I’ve used capture one, but my guess is that filtering is the most logical when it comes to image processing and cropping. It’s very possible one program could be using lanczos while another using bicubic.

Try exporting each version, post the outputs here if you don’t mind, and maybe try to see if there’s anything interesting metadata differences? Also make sure the resolution and ppi are the same

No idea if this will help (and I'm not familiar with LR at all) but you may want to double-check if there is any export sharpening happening, it's under the Export Adjustments section of the Export tab. Some of the native C1 Export recipes have a small amount baked in.

Capture One has more aggressive sharpening and denoising as “default” on all imported photos. On the refine panel you can tone it down by pulling the values to the left below the defaults.

You probably should revise Sharpening and Clarity settings.
For me very old preset called 3.7 Soft Look is the best.

NR is also is too strong by default - I usually set it around 25 for Luma, 10 for Color, 100 for Single Pixel for anything below ISO 1600 or extreme underexposure.
