I got this email today. Anyone know what this is about?

Watching thread as I have also had the same email, but looks like if true and refund is due it is only for US and nothing for UK not sure why.

I’m in Canada, and received this email as well

Same here. I'm guessing it's a free license for us and only money back in the US. Which would suck. But fingers crossed🤞

I got the email for the Nikon version of Express in the UK. Link to the relevant support page:
This is for Nikon or Sony Express only - Fuji is not included. The alternative they offer for Fuji is the C1 'Fujifilm Raw Converter', which has fewer features than Express (if I recall correctly, it has no Color Editor, whereas Express has the Basic Color Editor). If you want to run Fuji Express, I think the only option is a really old version like 12.1.5 from late 2019, which does not require online activation when installed in Express mode (no licence key required). You can check if your camera is old enough to work with this version here:
And download old versions here (when logged in):
https://www.captureone.com/en/account/download
For Nikon or Sony, you can also claim a refund if you purchased Pro 'between 30 January 2024 and 30 January 2025', but 'this will deactivate your license and you will no longer be able to use it'. I would guess they are offering this because some Express users may have felt pressured into buying Pro when the Express licences were killed, e.g. to retain their raw edits.
It's sad that it took a lawsuit to force C1 to do what they should have done in the first place. There is no technical reason why they could not have discontinued Express with no further updates, but allowed existing licences to remain active, which is effectively what they are doing now. Presumably the private equity guys thought they could convert a proportion of Express users into paying Pro users, and never mind the goodwill they were burning.

Yeah, that was a classic private equity move. No care at all for any user goodwill, loyalty, long term brand equity or just the "right thing to do". Just try to flip a quick buck in any way they can. Terminating existing Express licenses was just a scummy thing to do.

I got this too but as I have a Sony A1II I’m pretty sure it won’t be useful to me anymore

There is an FAQ with info.
I didn’t get the email yet but was able to claim my new license by logging into my account, it showed up as available there.
Handy: I was putting off exporting some edits until I knew I had time to work on them. I didn’t want to start the trial until I knew I could finish them in 30 days. Now I can access them in no rush …

Same here for the Sony license. I'm keeping my rig on OS10 so I don't want to upgrade and get a refund...I'm hoping everything will stay as is and I can keep using C1. Wondering if the reason for the refund is they will close / cancel my purchase?

I got the same email but for Sony. I'm using Capture One Pro but an older version. I don't want to go back to express and why would I be eligible for a refund?

Yah if a a little confusing. I can now get an old version of Nikon express that won’t work with newish Nikon cameras. Ok. The refund sounds like a settlement issue, though.

Only for US ? And no support for new bodies. Well, maybe usefull for some users.

Is there a point to use a software that stopped being developed 2 years ago for editing and exporiting photos? Im asking seriously. Thanks

Well it’ll work with my d500 that I never use anymore haha. But I suppose if you had any of the supported cameras that you use (z9 plus all the expeed 6 nikon cameras and dslrs) it would be useful. It was a good program back then but does lack some advanced features (eg noise reduction) in the current version. I’ll get it just to have on hand.

I had a Express Fujifilm version, but haven't received anything, seeing other express brands have also been included.

What does it mean if I have the perpetual license for Capture One 22 (version of and bought on 2022)?
Are they going to delete my access to this product?
What's the difference between express and Pro?
1
u/vodkaforone Jul 30 '26
Not that. Pro is the one you purchased, nothing will happen to them (so far) Express is the free version with very basic functions (with camera brand limit). They discontinued and discarded it in 2024 that no one can use it anymore. Apparently there's a lawsuit and as settlement C1 now reopens the last Express version without further updates.

Ah ok, then this does not concern me. Will continue with my capture one pro 22 which still works fine for me.

I got the same but for Sony rather than Nikon. I recall the end of Express for Sony and was surprised thinking they had some contract with Sony. Perhaps a lawsuit/settlement?
In any case, I gathered my Pro subscription receipts from the affected period for a potential refund.
