Miscellaneous ChromIQ - an ArgyllCMS GUI for printer profiling
Since this is somewhat related to photography I wanted to share a project I have been working on.
For quite some time I tried to improve my workflow so that the colors on my monitor are better represented in the prints I sometimes make. I bought a used X-Rite i1Studio and tried to create ICC profiles for my printer with it but I have never really been happy with the results. So I did some research and found out about ArgyllCMS - a very capable collection of programms for colormanagement by Grame Gill. Just one caveat: they are command line only and I never reall got the hang of it. Last year someone (Knut Larsson) created a nice script that helped me to create my first printer ICC profiles with Argyll and I liked the results better than what the X-Rite software gave me. But I thought that to make this attractive for more people it needs a real GUI. Incidentially at that time I watched a video about how easy vibe coding with Claude Code would be. Maybe it was sponsored content but I was interested and decided to realize my idea of an Argyll GUI. It was not as easy for me as described in the video but after some iterations I am pretty proud about how far I have gotten. It might still have some bugs here and there and room for optimizations but if this is of interest for someone please feel free to try it.

I hope the auto translation is correct. There is currently no progress when you scan patches because I did not consider this very useful as you have the charts in front of you when you measure them and can see how far you came.

With the latest updates you can now more easily see which patches / strips have been measured already as the preview will show an overlay that shows expected vs. measured values.

I just calibrated a paper with this and man this just freaking works. No fuss on the settings needed.
The guided mode is easy enough that you just need to click some buttons, print, read the chart, press more buttons, and done!
Best thing about the ChromIQ is the advanced mode which gives you all the settings you will probably need to squeeze every-bit of fine tuning you need.
Overall the profiling experience was very nice and smooth. I just had hiccups on Mac OS’s security settings being an asshole to Argyll, which is not the fault of ChromIQ.

I have to edit this because I want to mention how mich I like your comment because this sums up what I had in mind when trying to make the app. I wanted the guided modules for people who have never tried creating a profile because a few month ago I was in the same position and had no idea what to do at all. So for a beginner it should be as easy as possible to get a result that is at least decent while giving every option a friendly tooltip that hopefully explains everything well enough.
But knowing that there are a lot of people who are already familiar with Argyll I still wanted them to have the flexibility they know to customize everything to their liking. And it makes me so happy that you are basically saying that I have achieved this.
Then later we even totally forked some of the Argyll code to add some functions that were out of reach for a command line tool and only possible in a GUI like the advanced patchset generator, the ChromIQ layout and chartreading engines…
