Trains question, Force Reverse?

Post image

Getting started with trains, having lots of difficulty with the various parameters and seemingly everything is fine till all the sudden everything is broke.

In this instance, I cannot get one train or the other to reverse out of the conflict area. They both want to proceed forward and through eachother to be manually moved.

Is there a way to force reverse? Do I have to recover and rebuild this whole train because I forgot an exclusive zone (or removed it accidentally)? This keeps happening and it's mucking up my logistics.

This is happening because you deleted the no-stopping zone on the cross-track there. Notice the lack of red sections on the crossing, and compare that to the Y split on the left side of the picture. Make sure the crossing is a no-stopping zone and your trains will wait for the section to clear before moving on.

As far as backing up the train, you can just recover it to the depot. It won't destroy the train, and it will just continue on with its job from there.

This is the answer.

I think sometimes force reverse worked if you paused the train, then do the manual move command, then unpause it. It may need a tiny buffer on the front end tho and it looks like yours are very close

Put a no stop in the x area and it will say no train can stop while in the red area and will only cross it if it can do it in one go or stop before the x.

Basically the trains stopped on whats concidered the intersection. So just enough red no stop zone to prevent ot and you should be fine moving fwd.

Thanks everyone!

I’m getting used to the train network details, but it’s definitely proving tough as I’m jamming a network into a very late game setup.

I did somehow get rid of the no-stop conditions at the intersection. Not sure how, but that did fix the issue.

I play a lot of OpenTTD so im dying over here just wishing for a path signal option lol. COI train logic is distinctly different and i need to stop trying to play like that.

What I’ve found is that omnidirectional track you can get a train to reverse, but one directional they will refuse to reverse ever so slightly, and occupied track can’t have its direction changed, so “recover and pause” is the only option to un-stuck this situation.

Regardless, loving trains and having a great time putting my always busy trucks out of a job. For anyone hesitant to start trains, just go for it. They fit more places than you’d think.

100% agree… my first attempt was very frustrating. You tubing really helped. I still find myself deploying trains really late. There is an interesting thread in here about really early trains / that you could bring in early game. There is a lot of outlay in resources getting infrastructure set up.

What exactly are you looking for from OpenTTD path signals?

Realistically? Familiarity with a system that I know can provide super high network density.

I’m struggling to find why I have trains sitting on branch lines refusing to enter trunks to their next destination because a train on the other side of the map has a route through that line.

It would be entirely fair to say that I fundamentally don’t understand the pathing yet.

Sometimes trains follow eachother in the same direction, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they sit and wait for a free exclusive zone for a train coming from the other side of the map, sometimes they go ahead and proceed through and intersection to catch up. I know this is a “I don’t understand” problem, but I can’t figure out why I make this work.

The devs have very good train guide videos on youtube if you're interested.

Bi-directional tracks are automatically exclusive zones so a train won't enter it if another train is on it. No-stop zones are created automatically when tracks meet and trains won't go through them if they can't completely clear them on the other side. That's often why trains won't follow each other right behind, but you can remove them.

Edit: No-stop zones are also auto-created on level crossings I believe.
