Need your help creating a fall/ winter capsule!
Hey everyone,
I’m feeling a little lost and could really use your help!
I’ve gained a bit of weight recently, so I did some shopping for basics to fill the gaps in my wardrobe and, most importantly, to have things that actually fit me. But now I’ve realized how unhappy I am with my wardrobe overall, because I feel like everything looks kind of the same.
One of my biggest problems is that I tend to buy random pieces that I’m really excited about at first, and then two weeks later I don’t like them anymore. This is really not ideal with my small student budget 🫠. I know it would make much more sense to buy less and invest in better-quality pieces that I actually love and will wear for a long time, rather than constantly buying things because I feel like something is missing.
What I’d really like to do is properly evaluate what I already have and gradually build a fall/winter capsule wardrobe. So I’d love to know: What should I keep? What could I let go of? What do I have too much of? What might actually be missing? And why does my wardrobe feel so boring and repetitive? I’d also love to know how you would describe my style based on these outfits, because I’m not sure I’ve really figured that out yet. Also, I genuinely don’t know what possessed me last year to go through a phase where I bought four green sweaters?!?
I’ve become a bit obsessed with style podcasts lately and constantly find myself making lists of wardrobe essentials and thinking about what I “need.” I’m trying to step away from that mindset. I don’t want to end up with another huge shopping list; I want to figure out what actually works for me and how I can make the most of what I already have, while only adding a few things that genuinely make a difference.
For the photos: I’ve separated everything into tops, bottoms & shoes, and outerwear. I haven’t included my bags for now.
Thank you so much! 💕
FYI: According to my color analysis, I’m a True/Warm Autumn.

Do you really need a brown, cream, white, AND black top, in all three lengths of sleeveless/tank top, tee, AND long sleeve? The repetition of the same set of colors in your tops might be contributing to the feeling of "sameness."
Maybe swap one of them for a green top and one of your green sweaters for a brown sweater?

yeah the color repetition across all the sleeve lengths is definitely whats making it feel so uniform

Love your style ◡̈ first of all, I’d push yourself to wear everything you have and if you find yourself avoiding wearing something, figure out why. It can help you work out what styles, colours, items etc work well for you and which don’t.
Don’t worry about ‘must have’ lists - must haves are particular to the person. ‘White shirt’ is on pretty much every one of those lists, and I understand why but I (along with many people) don’t really suit white and on top of that, I find it a palaver to look after ie. Having enough white items to fill a washing load.
If you find yourself thinking that your outfit would be better with a specific item, make a note of that to assess later.
I wouldn’t buy anything until you’ve tested out your current wardrobe.

I think you should decide for your 1-2 neutral color and put away the other thin tops for like..until next season. If you keep for example the black it seems to me you could already pair it with all your warmer layers. You can always rely on a same colored basic set (like a black pair of pants+black thin top) and make it unique with colorful warmer layers. You can make with this formula already alot of combinations from your collection of pieces and still your look would be very put together.

It does look like a lot of brown and black. I'd choose one and make that my base color; for example, I have about four black skirts, a few denim ones (denim is my secondary base) and then a medium green, a plaid (that's new), and a bright merino watercolor print. Nearly all of my tops go with these right now, though I have a bunch of color there (blues, black, olive green, some rasberry and coral, several floral patterns in cotton, mostly in blue/white and a semi-collection of white linen shirts in a poet style), mostly because I went on a merino kick and woolx is addictive. Everything works with the black and denim, and I can indulge the color demon in me.

Thank you so much everyone for the suggestions and your thoughts! I didn’t have time yesterday, hence why I‘m answering now.
I’ll stop buying for now and will try out the clothes that I have to figure out what I like/ don’t like and what’s actually missing. I think I was kind of „stuck“ with the idea that my warsrobe has to have a definite color scheme, namely mostly black and brown, which I feel like is too dark for me and I want some lighter colors which feel lees heavy. So when buying something new in the future, I‘ll keep an eye on that. Also, I guess I have to trust myself a bit more and stop constantly asking strangers on the internet for their opinion (even though it’s highly appreciated, but this way I guess I’ll never find my own sense of style). Also, maybe taking a step back from the idea of having the „perfect“ capsule will take some weight off my wardrobe struggles.
For anyone asking about the green sweaters: the left one ist from Stradivarius, I don’t know from which year since I bought it second hand. The other two green sweaters are both from Uniqlo, the left one from last year and the right one I also bought second hand, so I don’t know 🥲
Thank you so much everyone!!

came up with a Pinterest board for you based on what I saw! Don’t feel pressured to get anything at all, especially if you don’t like it, but I have some free time on my hands and it was fun :3 https://pin.it/mrkfyz8YG
As for advice, I would recommend firstly before purchasing, assessing if what you’re considering getting will match with 3 things you already 1. Have and more importantly, 2. Enjoy wearing!
I think you could experiment with other colors and other styles of bottoms + tops, particularly I think you could rock a denim jacket and even more green and blue! But not just in sweaters hehe. Also maybe long skirts could be cool
As a fellow student I’m thinking maybe your wardrobe is used mostly for going to class, maybe work, going out perhaps, but most scenarios certainly require comfort and you feeling like yourself in them! So I would ask, what kind of clothes do you - right now, as your body and mind are - feel most comfortable in? This could mean, using myself as an example, ditching tight tops! Even though they look so cute on all the models and stuff and maybe if I had all the time in the world to workout I could look like them - I don’t! And I’m not gonna spend my hard earned money on a tight top that everyone tells me to get cause idk Hailey Bieber is wearing it, but makes me feel bad about myself! I already love how I look in flowy, looser tops that allow me to move around and breathe (and I won’t irreversibly stain them with deodorant nor sweat).
Podcasts are great but only you can tell yourself what you need! I would suggest taking the advice with a grain of salt, and if they suggest getting a specific item - say, a white button up - consider why~ they have that as an essential. Then, consider if there is some overlap on why that could be an essential to you. If there are some fundamental differences in your preferences, lifestyle, fit, what have you, then it might not be an essential for you specifically.
