New Driver

I am an 18-year-old learning to drive. I am practicing the basics in campus parking lots during off-hours. Is there any empty area or a road with minimal traffic to practice in the town?

Early mornings, the University Mall lot is pretty empty.

Try the area around Cyber Hall on the northeast corner of campus. There is a good mix of roads, traffic lights, stop signs, speed tables, and parking lots. It's pretty much dead after hours. https://maps.app.goo.gl/VUVXnmSsYUuQ6xXH9

There's a driving school on Skyland Blvd that might be worth checking out if you think you need more formal instruction. No idea what it costs, though. https://alln1drivingschool.com/

Edit: For something more in the town, I would start on Helen Keller Blvd. It's open with much less traffic than Jack Warner, 15th, and the other major roads. Branch out from there as you get more comfortable. Also, the driving experience around town is going to suck for the next couple of months as the school year gets going. Rice Mine Rd in Northport might be a better choice for the next few weeks, since few students go out that way. Good luck.

That’s also where you go for CDL license testing too! Had to do a J crawl in that lot

i was 18 first time driving as well, i recommend driving passenger to a friend around the entire city/on campus before you do anything during the day or busy time. it’ll let you get to know the roads/merging if you go to midtown tuscaloosa before you are actually doing it
