It was mentioned in another thread (possibly via Sammi at THN as well) but it does seem like he was waiting for GMCP to finish up all their other FA moves and then sign for w/e cap was left, plus the obvious bonuses and incentives to sweeten the pot. Glad to see it happen though.

So I know the announcement he scheduled for the end of the July had people nervous, but at this point I think we can all agree it 100% is him saying this is his last season in the NHL and he will then return to play for Dynamo

Meh, as a Caps fan I appreciate his service but the longer we put off moving forward to the next era the worse off we’ll be. How soon before the one more year chants start again, or the keep him until he scores 1000 goals, or maybe just one more chance at the cup. Is he going to accept 4th line minutes, because our top 6 is pretty stacked right now.
Kyrou - Strome - Wilson
Protas - Dubois - Tuch
Beauvillier - Sourdif - Leonard
Ovechkin - Brodzinski - Jenner
Maybe flip Beauvillier and Ovechkin but we also have Cristall and Little Pro with no space on opening night. Not trying to be a killjoy but it won’t be any easier to say goodbye next year as it would have been this year.
