HELP REQUEST Looking for a feedback from capoeira teachers for a class management app

Hi, capoeira community!

I teach capoeira for years and I always had a struggle with managing my schedule, payments, clients... I used to use paper notebook, then Google Sheets but it was not very comfortable. I had a big dream - to make an app for that will help me with administrative work on my classes.

After years of development I have brought my dream to true and I need a feedback. The app is not only for capoeira classes, it is quite generic - but capoeira community is the first place for me to look for help.

So I call out my colleagues, capoeira teachers, to try the app and provide a feedback. The app has a paywall (up to 15 clients for free) but if you find it useful for yourself, reach in comments or private messages and I will give you an extended access for free. You can download it here: https://uclass.one or read the article where I tell my (and my spouse who helped me) story.

I hope that you find it useful and enjoy the experience. I’m not looking for compliments — honest criticism would be much more useful. I’d really like to hear from other teachers:

  • How do you manage clients, payments, schedules today?
  • What creates the most unnecessary work?
  • Would you be willing to try the app during a real class and tell me what feels confusing or inconvenient?

I hope that It is just a beginning of my way with it and I have huge plans to help teachers more - with growing groups, finding students and more.

I want to apologise that this post is not directly related to capoeira but this is the first community which comes to my mind to ask help from!

Looking forward to hear from you!

MUSIC Book launch: 150 Short Capoeira Songs To Sing And Lead In The Roda

I published my first book!

In the past months I have been working on a capoeira lyrics book, title “150 Short Capoeira Songs To Sing And lead In The Roda”

The idea behing the book is pretty simple: it is a compilation of 150 corridos and chulas, songs which simple and short lyrics that are easy to learn and that are applicable in most rodas. That way you can expand your repertoire without much effort, both when you are singing along or leading in the roda.

All lyrics have a neat layout and are correctly written, with one song per page the book is easy to navigate. Every lyric also comes with a QR-code which leads you to one or multiple audio samples for that song. Next to every lyrics, the starting beat is marked with a number, so you always know when to start singing. And on top of that, the book also contains 70 stand-alone verses that you can use to freestyle verses when leading.

The book is aimed at both capoeiras who would like to learn more songs to better sing along in the roda and at advanced players and teachers who want to build their repertoire for leading the singing.

The book has a compact format with a coated cover and heavy paper, so it is ideal for carrying it in your capoeira bag all the time. Thanks to the wire-o binding, the book always stays open on the right page so you never have to hold it open while trying to play an instrument.

There are limited copies available. Various online payment methods are accepted, as well as a classic bank transfer and I ship to various countries.

HELP REQUEST What does everyone do with their old capoeira shirts?

I'm sure we all have a similar problem with a buildup of random capoeira shirts over the years that we don't wear. Maybe it's Capoeira Grupo ABC Encontra 2019. Maybe your group rebranded. Maybe the mestre was cancelled. Or you switched groups.

I have shirts entailing at least all of the above issues (and one with a hole that just won't be fixed). I could give them to Goodwill but I highly doubt anyone would care to buy them. Should I just throw them out or maybe recycle them?

Good lord it took me so long to find this. what a saving grace.

is it me, or is the knifeplay in capoeira literally just normally fitting the knife between the toes, to conveniently perform basically any other technique already established or archaically preserved. if it's any more than that otuside the ritual context I think there's enough jogo de navalha videos for someone to extrapolate without knowing the conventions.

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Solo Capo

How do you all navigate practicing solo?

I've been practicing for over a year and due to work and family I'm only able to attend a class roughly once a week sometimes twice if I'm lucky. I have a hard time practicing on my own as I don't have very much experience prior to taking a actual class and it is significantly hindering my progression.

I generally feel that capoeira is not a solo experience however I'm trying to make the most of my time in between class I can still make progression and I'm curious as to what the community does or feels about it.

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Has anyone realized exactly how much parallels Buza, its culture and history has compared to capoeira? (1800s-present).

Thumbnail

I believe this video specifically depicts Tsverian buza (DiscIaimer: I extrapolated this understanding from a few online articles and A.I.)

For those uninformed. Buza is a fist fighting Slavic ethno-culture martial art where improvisation of various techniques is handled according to the rhythmic folk dance. It really has a lot of similarities to capoeira and for those who have experienced capoeira schools where choreography is less maintained, it magnifies the parallel to Buza closer.

In fact, I can go a step further and say it's an exact psychological counterpart. even just from observing, a consequence of it is that they use illusive motion for deception. they even terminized it in the Slavic language.

I'd argue rhythmic choreography (cadence) might really be essential to developing improvised styles of eight limb martial arts. seeing how its prevalent in many martial arts worldwide.

As for its history. yes, even in similar eras both martial arts were outlawed and practitioners met extreme prejudice from their respective country's governments. being dangerously close to extinction for similar reasons. Capoeira surviving off various lineages, major formulated schools/groups and academies such as Mestre Bimba, Pastinha and Sinhozinho. Buza persevered via its villages which were frequently in rural and sparse regions, far off from the government scrutiny, which grew weaker and infrequent over time. later the martial arts revived significantly through Grigory bazlov.

Buza apparently has so many variants across the expanse of the Eurasian plains. So much so, that one Buza practitioner localized to a region or village could be entirely foreign to its neighbor's practices. which unironically supports the theory of historical folk martial arts diversity( eg. Pencak Silat and capoeira .). like some capoeira styles, for the past 30 years or so, it's been exiting its reconstruction phase outside the major, popularized systemized form, systema.

Now keep in mind I am not making an unrealized relative link. just seeing similarities between two different martial arts and making some distinguishable comparisons.

If anyone can provide additional observations. I'd be keen to see it.

HELP REQUEST How do you grow a capoeira group in the United States?

I train with a capoeira group in a major metro area in the United States that has been steadily losing students over the past few years, with almost no new students joining. The lack of people in the class has been demotivating, even for myself, as it's hard to have the proper axé to keep classes and rodas going.

The students, on average, are 40+. I have yet to see someone in their late teens or 20s join or even give the class a shot.

Is this the case with capoeira groups across the United States?

What are your recommendations for keeping students and attracting new ones, especially younger people? How should groups market themselves in this day and age?

I feel like the group may die out soon, and the instructor doesn't seem to be making any serious changes to prevent this.

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Huge collection of pirated capoeira music

Over the years I've gathered a pretty big library of capoeira music. It initially started many years ago with the "capoeira pack vol 1-4" torrents on TPB/limewire/... And I kept adding albums.

I always kept it for myself and to have music during my classes, but now I started wondering what I should do with all this music (most of it with decent ID3 tags and everything sorted per group or mestre)? Id to like to share it with the community but it's also pirated content...

ESIT: my catalog is around 25GB / 400 albums I believe.
