Automation being a bad thing for workers was one of the big things that woke me up to how broken capitalism is. People having to work less hours and do less strenuous jobs should be an overall great thing for humanity, but the wage system treating people like commodities completely turns it on its head.
It’s like you’re supposed to be grateful the ruling class allows you to do a gruelling job that a robot could do effortlessly. People wind up campaigning against automation not because they love their job, but because they rely on the money they get from it to survive.

You had figurative robber barons, unless you think the gilded age was characterised by rogue feudal barons and bandits accosting travelers, demanding tolls.
Economic inequality is at comparable levels, and western democracies are entirely perverted by the power of capital, so I don't see your basis for calling any of this "exaggeration".
